Most visitors ask us the same question at the counter: “Which bike should I take?” The honest answer is that the right bike changes with the day. A plain bicycle is the only one of the three that can roll through the walking streets in the evening. A pedal-assist e-bike makes An Bang beach and the coconut forest easy in the heat. A scooter is the only sensible choice for My Son, the Marble Mountains or Da Nang. This guide lays out the difference with real distances, our current prices and the Vietnamese rules that decide who can ride what.

Bicycle vs e-bike vs motorbike: the quick answer

If you only read one section, read this table. It is the way we choose for customers who walk in without a plan. Start from what the day looks like, not from the bike.

The pattern is simple. The bicycle wins inside Hoi An, the e-bike wins in the ring of villages and beaches around it, and the motorbike wins everywhere beyond 15 km. Many of our customers settle bicycle vs e-bike vs motorbike by renting two different bikes over a week, and that is usually the smartest plan.

Here is bicycle vs e-bike vs motorbike on the points that actually change your day. “E-bike” is a loose word in Hoi An, so we split it into the pedal-assist electric bicycle and the electric scooter, which behave very differently.

Two rows surprise people. The helmet row: a plain bicycle is the only one you can legally ride bare-headed, even though we still hand you a helmet. And the Old Town row: the quiet electric bicycle is treated like a scooter at the barrier, because it has a motor.

What Vietnamese law calls each one

This is the part most comparison articles skip, and it is the part that decides whether your travel insurance and the police see you as a cyclist or a motorbike rider. Vietnamese law does not use the word “e-bike”. It sorts vehicles by motor power and top speed.

A few consequences worth knowing:

• The electric bicycle is not a “free” motorbike. Riding one without a helmet is a fine of 400,000–600,000₫ under Decree 168/2024, the same bracket as a motorbike, as Thu Vien Phap Luat explains.
• Not every “e-bike” is an e-bicycle. The chunky electric bikes that look like scooters with folding pedals often run above 25 km/h and weigh 60 kg or more. Legally those are mopeds. Our VinFast Evo200 Lite is limited to 49 km/h for exactly this reason: it stays a moped, so it needs no licence.
• Your insurance reads the class, not the marketing. Many travel policies cover “motorcycles up to 50cc” or require a valid licence for anything bigger. Distance decides: the 15 km rule

Our pedal-assist e-bicycles run about 35 km on a charge with one rider on flat roads. That gives a simple rule: anything within about 15 km one way is e-bike territory; beyond that, take an engine. Wind off the sea, a heavier rider or a passenger on the child seat all eat into the margin. Distances below were measured on Google Maps from our shop at 84 Phan Chau Trinh.

Note that the e-bicycle column says “no” to Da Nang even though 27 km looks close to the range. The return leg is the problem: 54 km on a 35 km battery means pedalling a heavy bike home for 20 km. Riding a bicycle in Hoi An

Hoi An is flat, compact and full of lanes too narrow for cars. It is one of the few towns in Vietnam where a bicycle is not a compromise. You can stop anywhere, lock up against a tree, and walk into a tailor or a coffee shop without looking for scooter parking.

Where the bicycle shines:

• The Old Town in the evening. During walking hours a plain bike can enter; everything with a motor parks outside (see № 08).
• The villages at dawn. Tra Que and Thanh Ha are under 3.5 km from the shop. At 6:30 the roads are empty and the light is soft.
• Cam Nam and Cam Kim islands. Quiet roads, bridges over the Thu Bon, almost no trucks.

Where it struggles: the midday heat from April to August, the open road to An Bang with a headwind, and anything beyond 10 km if you do not cycle at home. Our city bikes have a front basket, a lock and a bell; a mountain bike is available for rougher lanes.

Riding an e-bike in Hoi An

This is where most confusion comes from, because “e-bike” can mean two quite different machines.

The pedal-assist electric bicycle

It looks like a bicycle and it is one: real pedals, a motor that helps as you pedal, and a top speed of about 25 km/h. You arrive at An Bang dry instead of soaked. If the battery runs flat you can still pedal home, which is not true of anything else with a motor. At 100,000₫ a day (50,000₫ an hour, 70,000₫ half a day) it costs twice a plain bike, and for any day that includes the beach it is worth it.

The electric scooter

Scooter-shaped, throttle only, seats two. Our fleet runs from the Mi-ni Baby (120,000₫) and the Mini Electric Scooter (150,000₫) to the VinFast Evo200 Lite (200,000₫). It is the answer for couples without a motorbike licence who want the beach, the villages and even Da Nang. Riding a motorbike in Hoi An

A scooter turns Hoi An from a town into a base. My Son, the Marble Mountains, Son Tra peninsula and the Hai Van Pass all become day trips. You also keep up with traffic on the main roads to Da Nang, where a bicycle is simply out of place among buses and container trucks.

The trade-offs are real, and we would rather say them than sell you the wrong bike:

• Licence. Anything over 50cc needs a licence valid for motorbikes plus a 1968 International Driving Permit. Without one you risk a fine and, more importantly, an insurer that will not pay.
• Experience. Hoi An is the gentlest place in central Vietnam to ride, but it is not the place to learn from zero. If you have never ridden, book a private riding lesson first or pick an e-bicycle.
• Parking. Guarded lots cost 5,000–10,000₫, and the Old Town is closed to engines most of the day.

Semi-automatics start at 110,000₫ a day (Suzuki Viva), automatics from 120,000₫ (Honda Click) and 180,000₫ for a Honda Vision. Fuel is cheap: a day around Hoi An and the beaches rarely uses more than a litre or two. The Old Town test

The Ancient Town closes to motor vehicles from 9:00 to 11:00 and from 15:00 until 21:00 (21:30 in summer). On Phan Chau Trinh, our street, the barriers go up at 17:30. The scheme is written for pedestrians and non-motorised vehicles, and that single word decides the whole bicycle vs e-bike vs motorbike question inside the heritage core.

A two-dollar bicycle can ride down Tran Phu at 8 PM. A scooter ten times the price has to park at the edge and wait.

Some guards wave a slow e-bicycle through at quiet times. Do not plan on it: on full-moon nights they will not. Riding a motorbike past the sign is a 2,000,000–3,000,000₫ fine on paper, although in practice you are turned back. Heat, rain and the time of day

Weather changes the answer more than any spec sheet. From April to August afternoons run in the mid-30s °C, and there is almost no shade on the rice-field roads.

• Before 9:00: the best cycling hours of the year. A plain bicycle is perfect for anything under 10 km.
• 11:00 to 15:00, dry season: e-bicycle or scooter. Pedalling a city bike home from An Bang at 1 PM is how people end their holiday with heatstroke.
• From 16:00: back to the bicycle, finishing in the Old Town as the lanterns come on.
• September to December: the rainy season. Downpours are sudden and short; low roads near the river can flood in October and November. A scooter gets you home fastest; every rental comes with a raincoat.

What a day really costs
