№ 01Who these lessons are for

Most of the people who sit on our practice bike have never touched a motorbike in their life. That is exactly who the lesson is designed for. There is no test, no paperwork, and no licence required to take a lesson — you are learning on private ground with an instructor beside you.

The second group we teach are riders who can already ride an automatic scooter but want to move up to a manual clutch bike before a longer trip — the Hai Van Pass, the Ho Chi Minh road, or a loop up to Hue. That transition is what most of our two and three hour lessons are spent on.

Since 2019 we have taught thousands of travellers to ride — from people who had never sat on a bike, to riders getting ready for the Hai Van Pass.Anh Khoa Hoi An

№ 04Kids’ bicycle lessons

For ages 4–10

Teach your child to ride a bicycle in Hoi An

One child, one coach, one kid-size bicycle, in the same traffic-free yard. We start with balance drills, then pedalling, steering and braking — and most children finish with a proud solo lap. Helmet and safety gear are included, and parents are welcome to watch (bring a camera).

900,000₫ (1 hour) · 1,500,000₫ (2 hours) · 2,400,000₫ (3 hours) — most kids ride on their own within one to three sessions.

№ 05What a lesson actually covers

Automatic scooter

Twist and go — the fastest route to riding

Best for: first-time riders, city and beach trips

We walk through every control on the bike — throttle, electric starter, brakes, indicators — then work on smooth acceleration and braking until it stops feeling twitchy. After that come turns on quiet streets, figure eights and U-turns for balance, and finally a live-traffic route through Hoi An with your instructor riding alongside.

Manual motorbike

Clutch, gears and foot brake

Best for: Hai Van Pass, long trips, hill roads

Everything above, plus the part that makes people nervous: the clutch. We teach shifting up and back down to first and neutral, finding the friction point, using the foot brake and hand brake together, and turning while feathering the clutch — the skill that keeps you steady in slow traffic and on hill starts.

Ask anything while you ride

Instructors are happy to talk through Vietnamese road rules, what the police check for, which bike model suits you, and the small habits — mirror position, horn use, lane discipline — that make Hoi An traffic far less intimidating than it looks.

№ 06How the session runs

  1. Meet at the office or your hotelCome to 84 Phan Chau Trinh, or add hotel meet-up when you book and the instructor comes to you for 30,000₫.
  2. Controls and a short briefingFifteen minutes off the bike: what each control does, how to sit, where to look, and how to stop safely.
  3. The practice yardA large, traffic-free yard beside the office. Starting, stopping, slow riding, figure eights, U-turns and emergency braking until they feel automatic.
  4. Real streetsOnly when your instructor is confident. Quiet lanes first, then a live route through Hoi An with the instructor riding beside you the whole way.

№ 07What to bring

  • Closed shoes — no flip flops, no sandals
  • Long trousers — not a skirt or dress
  • Sunglasses and water if you are riding in the middle of the day
  • Nothing else — the bike, helmet and fuel are all included
  • A licence is not needed to take a lesson
Riding on your own afterwards

A lesson teaches you to ride; it is not a licence. To ride legally in Vietnam on a bike above 50cc you need a valid International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category, or a Vietnamese licence. Under-50cc bikes are the exception — those need no licence, and we rent them.

№ 08Advanced training for experienced riders

If you already ride and want to ride better, we run personalised sessions built around whatever you want to sharpen — cornering lines, trail braking, smooth gear changes, riding loaded with luggage, or handling wet roads and gravel. Sessions include defensive riding and hazard perception, which is the part that matters most on Vietnamese highways.

Advanced session — cornering and control drills.

Advanced training is arranged individually. Message us with what you ride and what you want to work on, and we will put a plan together.

Had moped lesson for 2 hrs with Tam. Was an amazing teacher. Very good english. Very good clear step by step instructions and process to get me from never having ridden a moped before, to by the end driving around town at night with lots of traffic.

I came across a random Google review of Anh Khoa when I was in the South, and that was when I decided that I would learn how to ride a scooter in Hoi An. Trust me when I say I was not disappointed, and that this motorbike rental service has five stars for a reason!

On my first day in Hoi An, I contacted Anh Khoa via WhatsApp, and literally the next day I had my first one hour lesson. I could not fault Tam, my instructor, as a teacher. He spoke great English and was very clear and concise with his instructions. We ran technique drills on the first day on secluded roads, focusing on balancing and controlling the scooter. This included figure 8s and U-turns. After my one hour lesson, I really believed I could make enough progress to confidently ride on my own if I booked another lesson, and so I did for the next day!

My second one hour lesson consisted of more time on busier roads, however we also learned other techniques, like emergency braking, parking into and driving off of a curb, and other drills which helped you to be more balanced. By the end of this lesson, I was confident enough to drive on the roads, and so I rented the scooter for two more days so that my partner and I could explore more of Hoi An.

The whole rental process was simple and easy, it was all organised through WhatsApp, and required no passport. I even received a discount on the scooter as I had lessons!

After two days around Hoi An, my partner and I decided that we would tackle the Hai Van pass. Anh Khoa organised the motorbikes, as well as our luggage transfer to Hue at a very competitive price. Winning!

We took two days to get to Hue, making a stop at Da Nang for one night. The bikes we used for the two days were in perfect condition. My partner, who already knew how to ride scooter, rented a semi-automatic bike that was probably the best one we have used in Vietnam so far.

Congrats if you got to the end of this review! This is all to say that I was a complete scooter/ motorbike beginner at the start of Hoi An. And by the time we left, I was on my way to conquering the Hai Van pass — all thanks to two lessons with Tam from Anh Khoa. I am confident in riding a scooter anywhere now.

I really, really recommend anyone wanting to learn how to ride a scooter/motorbike to consider doing it through these guys. Considering the quality of their lessons, their hassle-free processes, as well as the excellent condition of their bikes, I would give them ten stars if I could. Conquering the Hai Van pass has been the highlight of my trip, and I couldn't have done it without them.

Had a total of three hours of scooter driving lessons! A very sweet and patient instructor! Simple and step-by-step instructions made it very easy for me to learn! In my opinion, one hour is enough to learn the basics (balance, gas, steering and brake). But the other hours also helped me with skills such as crossing, hills, bridges, intersections, climbing sidewalks and driving in narrow alleys! All in all, this driving school is definitely recommended! :))

I had a 1 hour motorbike lesson here and would highly recommend to anyone else looking to hire a bike but needing some support first. I’d never ridden a bike before but by the end of the lesson was able to turn in circles left and right, weave, complete figure of 8’s and go and down the curb. The instructor was very good, he made me feel really confident in what I achieved during the lesson and now I feel more capable of hiring a bike whilst I’m in Vietnam. Thank you so much!

Amazing motorbike rental service. I wanted to ride a motorbike for the first time in Vietnam and after talking with the locals, Hoi An seemed the best place to do it. Nevertheless, I was still a bit hesitant until I discovered this place that offers 1h motorbike lessons. The lesson was great and we went through all the fundamentals about the bike and best driving skills. At first we practiced in an isolated street and then we moved into the city with more traffic. I learned everything that I need to know about riding a bike in Vietnam (which is a lot different from what I'm used to), from driving into a crossing, how and when to use the horn, parking the bike on the sidewalk, to driving in narrow and steep streets, etc. The instructor was super encouraging and always making sure I understood everything. He even recorded my driving skills with a GoPro which was a nice addition.
The next day I felt confident enough to rent a bike and travel around Hoi An and go to Da Nang. They even dropped off and picked up the bike from my homestay. Highly recommended.

Great place to rent a motorbike and learn how to ride a motorbike! I took a lesson with them and my teacher got me comfortable driving around the streets within an hour. Also took a really lovely video of the whole thing. Highly recommend!

Very great service! Didn’t have any scooter experience so I asked if I could book a lesson, I could come in the next day. The lesson was thorough and everything was clearly explained to me. I did some exercises and even went into town to ride the bike. Afterwards I felt very confident and the next day I rode the Hai van pass to Hue by myself! The company took my bags all the way to Hue and I could collect them as soon as I arrived 🙂 Highly recommend!

№ 11Questions travellers ask

Can I take a lesson as a complete beginner with no licence?

Yes — that is who most of our lessons are for. Automatic scooter lessons and manual motorbike lessons both start from zero, and no licence is needed to take a lesson, because you learn on private ground with an instructor. Riding alone on public roads afterwards is a separate question — see the note on licences above.

How many hours will I need to feel confident?

It varies. Plenty of people are riding an automatic scooter comfortably after one hour. For a manual clutch bike, most beginners need at least two hours before they feel genuinely confident. Your instructor will tell you honestly where you are rather than push you into traffic early.

Where do the lessons take place?

They start in a large, traffic-free yard next to our office at 84 Phan Chau Trinh, Hoi An. After a short briefing and yard practice, your instructor takes you onto low-traffic streets nearby, and then into normal Hoi An traffic once you are ready.

What should I wear and what is included?

Closed shoes and long trousers — no flip flops, no skirts or dresses. Everything else is included: the bike, the helmet, the fuel and the instructor. You do not need to bring or rent anything.

Can I rent a motorbike immediately after the lesson?

Yes, provided a bike is available and your instructor is confident you can handle Hoi An streets on your own. Every student gets 20% off motorbike rental at Anh Khoa after a lesson. Remember that bikes above 50cc legally require an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category.

Do you teach children?

Yes, but on bicycles rather than motorbikes. Our kids’ bicycle lesson is for ages 4–10, one child with one coach and a kid-size bicycle, in the same traffic-free yard. Helmet and safety gear are included.

How do I book a group lesson?

Group lessons are not sold through the cart, because we match coaches and bikes to your group size. Message us on WhatsApp or Zalo at 0935 206 306 with the number of students and your preferred day, and we will confirm a slot.

Ready for your first ride?

Tell us the day, the time and whether you want automatic or manual. We will do the rest.
