That last one saves the most trouble. Plenty of travellers arrive with a permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, which is not valid in Vietnam — knowing before you book means we put you on a 50cc or an electric bike, both of which need no licence at all.

- Only going into the Old Town? Most of it is pedestrianised in the evening. A bicycle or a short walk beats a scooter you have to park.
- Nervous about traffic? Hoi An is calmer than Da Nang and far calmer than Hanoi, but it is still Vietnam. Start with a quiet morning ride out to An Bang before taking on anything longer.
