Every guest who picks up an electric scooter at 84 Phan Chau Trinh asks the same thing before they ride off: how far will this go? The honest answer has two numbers in it. The first is the one VinFast prints, measured in ideal conditions. The second is the one we tell guests to plan around, based on how people actually ride in Hoi An: two up, stopping at every photo spot, twisting the throttle to the limit on the beach road. This guide explains both, then turns them into something useful — which trips fit inside one charge, which need a battery swap, and which are better done on petrol.

The scooter in question is the VinFast Evo200 Lite, the model in our electric fleet. It is the version of the Evo200 limited to 49 km/h, which is why foreign visitors can ride it without a licence or an International Driving Permit.

The VinFast electric scooter range, in numbers

VinFast publishes four range figures for the Evo200 Lite, each tied to a test condition. That detail matters more than the headline, because the condition tells you how much of it you will actually see.

The source for the first four rows is VinFast’s own Evo200 Lite spec page. The last row is ours. It is not a lab number; it is the figure we give guests so that nobody runs flat on the way back from the beach. Most people come back with battery to spare, and that is the point of a planning figure.

So when someone quotes “up to 200 km” for this scooter, they are right, and it is also the wrong number to plan a day around. The useful version of the VinFast electric scooter range for a visitor is 100 km with a comfortable margin, and up to about 140 km if you ride alone and gently.

Why the real range is lower than the brochure

An electric scooter has a fixed tank of energy — 3.5 kWh on the Evo200 Lite — and every factor below spends it faster. None of them are faults; they are just physics and Hoi An traffic.

• Speed. Air resistance grows much faster than speed does. VinFast’s own figures show it: the same scooter goes 205 km at 30 km/h and 133 km at 50 km/h. The Evo200 Lite tops out at 49 km/h, so riding flat out is the most common way guests lose range.
• Weight. The lab rider weighs 65–70 kg. Two adults plus a beach bag can be double that. The scooter is rated to carry 130 kg, and at that load the motor works noticeably harder, especially pulling away.
• Stop-and-go. Every time you stop at a junction and accelerate back up to speed, you spend energy you do not get back. The Old Town, the market streets and the roads around An Bang are all stop-and-go.
• Headwind and weather. The coastal road north towards Da Nang often has a sea breeze in your face on one leg. Riding into it for 20 km costs more than the same distance in still air.
• Battery age. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries age slowly, which is one reason VinFast uses them, but a battery that has done several years of daily rentals holds a little less than a new one.

One thing that does not hurt much is rain. The Evo200 Lite battery is rated IP67 — sealed against dust and able to survive temporary immersion — so an afternoon downpour in the wet season is a comfort problem, not a battery one. Deep floodwater is still a reason to turn around, for the motor and for you.

Which Hoi An day trips fit in one charge

This is where the VinFast electric scooter range turns into actual plans, and it is the table most guests need. Distances are one way from our shop at 84 Phan Chau Trinh, measured on Google Maps along the normal scooter route; the round trip is simply doubled. The last column assumes our 100 km planning figure for two people and a full battery at the start.

The pattern is simple. Everything in and around Hoi An — the Old Town, the two beaches, the craft villages and the coconut forest — adds up to far less than one charge even if you do all of it in a day. A typical sightseeing day for our guests is somewhere between 30 and 60 km, which leaves half the battery unused.

The Da Nang trips are where you start planning. Marble Mountains is comfortable. Dragon Bridge is fine as long as you ride there and back rather than exploring the whole city. Son Tra Peninsula is a different case: the road up to Linh Ung Pagoda is a long, steady climb, and climbing two-up at full throttle is the hardest work you can ask of a 1.5 kW motor. Go with a full battery and do not plan anything else that day.

My Son is the edge of what we recommend. At 76 km for the round trip, it sits inside our planning figure on paper, but two people riding the DT610 at full speed leaves very little margin, and there is nowhere along the way to swap a battery. Riding two-up: what a passenger costs you

Most of our electric scooters go out with two people on them, and that is the single biggest reason our planning figure is 100 km rather than 140. A second adult roughly doubles the weight the motor has to move. On flat roads at a steady pace the difference is modest; it shows most when you pull away from junctions and on climbs, which is exactly how riding in town works.

The Evo200 Lite is rated by VinFast for a maximum load of 130 kg. Two average adults fit inside that. Two larger adults with a heavy bag may not, and at the limit the scooter will feel slow off the line and lose more battery on every hill. A simple way to think about it: if one of you rides solo for the afternoon while the other is at a cooking class, the scooter will go noticeably further than it did in the morning with both of you on it. Neither number is wrong. They are just different loads.

Charging and free battery swaps

For a rental, charging is mostly our problem rather than yours. Every scooter leaves the shop with a full battery, and if the gauge gets low while you are nearby, you ride back to 84 Phan Chau Trinh and we swap in a charged battery in about two minutes, free, as often as you need. That turns the VinFast electric scooter range from a daily limit into a question of how often you pass the shop.

Those are VinFast’s figures. In practice it means an overnight charge on the standard charger will get you back to full, while a lunch stop will not add much. If you are renting for a week and want to charge at your hotel, ask the hotel first: many in Hoi An do not allow scooters or batteries to be charged in rooms, for fire-insurance reasons.

How to get more kilometres from a charge

None of these will turn 100 km into 200, but together they can add a useful margin on a longer day.

1. Ride at 35–40 km/h, not 49.The biggest single saving. VinFast’s own numbers drop by about a third between 30 and 50 km/h.
2. Accelerate smoothly.Roll the throttle on rather than snapping it open at every junction. It costs you a second and saves battery every time.
3. Leave the heavy stuff at the hotel.Beach bag, yes. Full luggage, no — if you are moving hotels, use our delivery instead.
4. Start the long leg first.On a Da Nang day, ride the far point in the morning with a full battery, and do the short town stops on the way back.
5. Check the tyres.We check pressure at every handover, but if the scooter feels heavy to push, stop by and we will look at it.
6. Plan the swap into your route.Heading from An Bang to Marble Mountains? Pass the shop between them and leave with a full battery.

The brochure tells you what the scooter can do. The planning figure tells you what you can do with a passenger, a beach bag and a stop for coffee — and still get home.

When a petrol scooter is the better choice

We rent both, so there is no reason to pretend electric suits every trip. It does not.

• My Son with two people, or any day that goes past about 80 km in total. You want margin, and petrol stations are everywhere.
