Electric Riding · 2026 Guide
Short answer: a full charge takes about 5–7 hours for most electric motorbikes in Vietnam — plug it in after dinner and it’s ready before breakfast. The longer answer depends on your battery type, charger and even the weather. Here’s everything we’ve learned running a fleet of electric bikes in Hoi An — plus why, if you’re renting from us, you may never need to wait for a charge at all.
Charging time by model & battery type
Charging time comes down mostly to battery chemistry and size. Lithium-ion batteries — now standard on newer VinFast models — charge noticeably faster and last more cycles than the older lead-acid packs still common on budget brands.
| Type / model | Battery | Full charge |
|---|---|---|
| VinFast Feliz / Klara / Evo | Lithium-ion | ~5–6 hours |
| Yadea, Dibao, Pega | Lithium or lead-acid | ~6–7 hours |
| Older lead-acid scooters | Lead-acid | 6–8+ hours |
| Pedal-assist e-bicycle | Small lithium pack | ~3–5 hours |
One useful quirk: batteries charge fastest up to about 80%, then slow down for the last stretch. If you only need a top-up for an evening ride, an hour or two on the plug goes a surprisingly long way.
What actually affects charging speed
Battery capacity & health
A bigger battery simply holds more energy to refill, and an older battery both charges slower and holds less. After 2–3 years of daily use, expect real-world range to drop from the brochure numbers.
The charger itself
Always use the charger that came with the bike (or the manufacturer’s official replacement). Higher-watt fast chargers exist, but cutting charge time by half can shave 20–30% off battery lifespan — fine occasionally, bad as a daily habit.
Temperature
Batteries like the same weather you do: roughly 15–25°C is ideal. In Vietnam’s heat, charge in the shade and let the battery cool 20–30 minutes after riding before plugging in — charging a hot battery ages it fast.
7 charging habits that keep your battery healthy
The local mechanic’s checklist
1. Don’t run to 0% — recharge around 20–30% remaining; deep discharges wear lithium cells.
2. Unplug within a few hours of the light turning green — don’t leave it on the charger all day.
3. Use the original charger, always.
4. Charge in a dry, ventilated spot — never under direct midday sun or in the rain.
5. Let a hot battery cool 20–30 minutes after a long ride before charging.
6. Storing the bike a while? Leave the battery at 50–70%, not full, not empty.
7. Charging to 80% most days and 100% only before long rides stretches battery life significantly.
“Plug it in after dinner, unplug it at breakfast — that one habit covers 90% of battery care. The other 10% is just keeping it cool.”— Anh Khoa, Hoi An local

FAQ — Charging an electric motorbike
How long does it take to fully charge an electric motorbike?
Most models take 5–7 hours from empty to full. Lithium-ion batteries (VinFast Feliz, Klara, Evo) are quicker at around 5–6 hours; lead-acid batteries on older or budget models take 6–8+ hours. Small pedal-assist e-bicycle batteries need only 3–5 hours.
How far can an electric motorbike go on one charge?
The rental e-bikes we run in Hoi An realistically cover 80–100 km per charge — more than enough for a full day of sightseeing, which rarely exceeds 40 km around Hoi An.
Can I charge an electric motorbike at my hotel?
Yes — it uses a standard wall socket, and most hotels and homestays in Hoi An are used to guests charging e-bikes overnight. Charge in a ventilated spot, away from direct sun, and unplug once full.
Is it OK to leave it charging overnight?
Generally yes for a 5–7 hour charge that finishes around morning — but avoid leaving it plugged in for many hours after it’s full. Chronic overcharging is one of the fastest ways to age a battery.
Where can I charge my electric motorbike in Hoi An?
Most hotels and homestays let you charge overnight from a normal wall socket for free. If that’s not an option, Anh Khoa at 84 Phan Chau Trinh offers a charging service for any e-bike brand — 50,000đ per full charge, with original-spec chargers in a supervised space.
