Hoi An by Electric Scooter: Six Quiet Routes, Real Range and the Old Town Rules (2026)
Seeing Hoi An by electric scooter works because almost everything worth riding to sits within 7 km of the Old Town. Here are six routes we measured, what one charge really covers, and where the silent scooter still is not allowed.
Hoi An sits on the flat delta of the Thu Bon River. There is no hill between the Old Town and the sea, the lanes through the rice fields are narrow and slow, and the places people actually want to see are a few kilometres apart. That is close to perfect ground for a battery scooter: quiet enough to hear the frogs in Tra Que, light enough for a first-time rider, and never more than a short hop from a charger.
This guide is the practical side of exploring Hoi An by electric scooter: which ride to pick, how far a charge goes on real roads, six routes with distances measured from our shop at 84 Phan Chau Trinh, the hours when the Old Town is closed to anything with a motor, and the days when a petrol scooter is the honest answer.

Why Hoi An by electric scooter works
Three things make the town unusually kind to battery bikes. The first is distance. Of the places most visitors ride to in a week, the pottery village of Thanh Ha is 2.9 km from the shop, Tra Que vegetable village 3.2 km, An Bang beach 4.6 km, the Kim Bong carpentry village 5.8 km, Cua Dai beach 5.9 km and the Bay Mau coconut forest 7.1 km. You could visit all six in one day and still use less than half a battery.
The second is the ground. The whole area is river delta, a metre or two above the sea, so the motor never has to haul two people up a long climb. Hills are what drain an electric scooter fastest, and around Hoi An there simply are none until you head for the mountains west of town.
The third is speed. Inside town and on the field lanes nobody rides fast, and the 49 km/h ceiling of a VinFast scooter is not something you will notice. Out on the coast road to Da Nang, where trucks and buses run at 60, it is a different story, which is why we draw the line for e-scooters at the Marble Mountains.
Out in the rice fields the loudest thing on an electric scooter is the wind in your helmet. On a petrol bike you never hear the ducks.

Which electric ride to pick
“Electric” covers four quite different machines in our shop. The cheapest is not a scooter at all but a pedal-assist bicycle, and that difference matters more than price once you reach the Old Town (see № 05). Prices are today’s daily rates from our booking system, checked on 3 October 2026.
| Ride | Per day | Seats | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electric bicycle (pedal-assist) | 100,000₫ (~$4) | 1 | The Old Town lanes, Tra Que, An Bang at sunrise |
| Electric Mi-ni Baby | 120,000₫ (~$5) | 1 | Short solo hops around town |
| Mini Electric Scooter | 150,000₫ (~$6) | 1–2 light riders | Beach and village days, basket for shopping |
| VinFast Evo200 Lite | 200,000₫ (~$8) | 2 | Two people, full-day loops, Marble Mountains |
Rentals of seven days or more are 10% off, delivery to your hotel starts at 30,000₫, and the final quote is always confirmed by message. If two adults are sharing one machine, take the VinFast: it is the only one in the list built to carry two all day without straining.

How far one charge really takes you
VinFast quotes 205 km for the Evo200 Lite, but read the small print: that is at a steady 30 km/h with one 65 kg rider. Its own tests give 149 km at 45 km/h and 133 km at 50 km/h, still with one rider (VinFast’s range figures). With two adults, stop-start town riding and the throttle held open on the beach road, we tell guests to plan on about 100 km. Our full breakdown is in VinFast electric scooter range in Hoi An.
What that number means in practice is easier to see as a share of the battery. The distances below were measured on Google Maps from 84 Phan Chau Trinh on 3 October 2026; the last column assumes the ~100 km real-world figure.
| From the shop to | One way | Return | Share of one charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thanh Ha pottery village | 2.9 km | 5.8 km | ~6% |
| Tra Que vegetable village | 3.2 km | 6.4 km | ~6% |
| An Bang beach | 4.6 km | 9.2 km | ~9% |
| Kim Bong carpentry village | 5.8 km | 11.6 km | ~12% |
| Cua Dai beach | 5.9 km | 11.8 km | ~12% |
| Bay Mau coconut forest | 7.1 km | 14.2 km | ~14% |
| Marble Mountains | 18.0 km | 36 km | ~36% |
| Dragon Bridge, Da Nang | 27.2 km | 54 km | ~55%, not recommended |
| My Son Sanctuary | 38.2 km | 76 km | ~76%, take petrol |
The rule we give at the counter is simple: if the far end of your day is more than about 20 km away, the battery is not your problem, the road is. Da Nang is within range on paper, but the coast road is fast, open to the wind and full of tour buses, and a 49 km/h scooter is the slowest thing on it.
Six routes for an electric scooter in Hoi An
All six start and finish at the shop, run on flat roads, and fit easily inside one charge. Add two or three together and you still will not reach half a battery. For the same loops at pedal speed, see our Hoi An cycling routes; for longer petrol rides, the motorbike routes around Hoi An.
1. Thanh Ha pottery and the riverbank (2.9 km)
Head west along Hung Vuong and turn towards the river. Thanh Ha has been firing terracotta for around five centuries, and the potters still turn bowls on foot-driven wheels in open workshops. Morning is best, before the tour groups. Ride slowly on the village lanes; they are shared with children on bicycles and drying pots.
2. Tra Que vegetable village to An Bang beach (3.2 + 1.4 km)
The classic. Take Hai Ba Trung north and turn off into Tra Que, where the herb beds are fertilised with seaweed from the lagoon. This is where the silence of an electric scooter pays off: you can roll between the beds without the farmers looking up. Carry on to An Bang beach for a swim and coffee. Parking at the beach usually costs 5,000–10,000₫.

3. Bay Mau coconut forest and Cua Dai (7.1 km)
East along Cua Dai road, then south into Cam Thanh, where nipa palms line the canals and the round basket boats wait for passengers. Ride on to Cua Dai beach (it is on the way back) for the sea breeze. Expect touts at the coconut forest; agree the basket-boat price before you sit down.
4. Kim Bong carpentry village (5.8 km)
Kim Bong sits on Cam Kim island across the Thu Bon. The village built the boats and much of the carved woodwork you see in the Old Town, and a few family workshops still work by hand. The ride crosses the river by bridge and then follows quiet island lanes past fish ponds and banana groves.
5. The Old Town edge at dawn (under 2 km)
Before 9:00 the Old Town is open to scooters and almost empty. A slow loop along Bach Dang and the riverfront, then out over the An Hoi bridge, gives you the lantern streets without the crowds. By 9:00 you need to be out (see № 05).
6. Marble Mountains, the farthest sensible ride (18 km)
North on the coast road to the five limestone hills of Ngu Hanh Son. At 36 km return it uses about a third of a VinFast battery, which is the furthest we suggest for a day on an e-scooter. Go early, ride in the right-hand lane, and leave the scooter in the paid car park at the foot of the hill.
The Old Town: where the silent scooter still cannot go
This catches more guests than anything else. An electric scooter makes no noise and no fumes, so it feels as though it should be welcome in the lantern streets. It is not. Under Vietnamese law a battery scooter is a motor vehicle, and the Old Town walking-street rules are written about motors, not noise.
- Closed to all motor vehicles: 9:00–11:00 every day, and 15:00–21:30 in summer (to 21:00 in winter).
- Phan Chau Trinh in practice: on our own street the barriers usually go up at about 17:30, later than the announced 15:00 (checked September 2026).
- The exception: a pedal-assist electric bicycle, where the motor only helps while you pedal, counts as a bicycle and may go in. Push it when the lanes are crowded.
- Parking: guarded lots around the Old Town charge 5,000–10,000₫ for a scooter.
The full timetable, street by street, is in Hoi An Old Town vehicle restriction hours, and the legal reasoning behind the e-bike exception is in are electric motorbikes allowed in Hoi An Old Town.

Charging: hotel, shop and the road
For the routes in this guide you will rarely need to charge in the middle of the day. When you do, there are three options, and the first one is the least reliable.
Your hotel. Many hotels and homestays will not let you bring a scooter battery into a room or plug a scooter into a lobby socket, for fire-safety reasons. Ask before you rely on it. Our shop. If you rent from us, bring the scooter back to 84 Phan Chau Trinh and we swap or top up the battery free. For riders on other scooters we charge a flat 50,000₫ for a full charge; details are in VinFast electric scooter charging in Hoi An. On the road. VinFast uses a standard charging inlet, but a full charge on the 400 W charger takes about 10 hours (about 4 hours on the 1,000 W charger), so a café top-up only buys you a little extra.
Your first ride on an e-scooter
An electric scooter is twist-and-go, like an automatic, and most first-timers are comfortable within ten minutes in the quiet street behind the shop. Three things feel different from petrol.
- The power is instant. There is no engine to rev up. Roll the throttle on gently, especially from a standstill with a passenger.
- Nobody hears you. Pedestrians, cyclists and dogs step out without looking because they cannot hear you coming. Use the horn with a light tap in the lanes, as locals do.
- The gauge is the fuel gauge. Check it at handover and again at lunch. There is no petrol station on the corner to save you.
At handover we check the brakes, lights, tyres and battery level with you, and every rental comes with two helmets and a rain poncho. Keep the helmet on: it is the law for every rider and passenger, on electric scooters as on petrol ones.

Licence and paperwork
Under Vietnam’s Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety (No. 36/2024/QH15, in force since 1 January 2025), an electric motorbike with a motor of 4 kW or less and a design speed of 50 km/h or less needs no driving licence. Riders must be at least 16. The VinFast Evo200 Lite has a 1,500 W motor and a 49 km/h top speed, so it sits inside that limit, and so do the smaller electric scooters and the pedal-assist bicycle. Our electric motorbike licence guide has the details.
That is why electric is the usual answer for visitors without a valid licence. For the rental itself you only need your passport: we take a refundable 2,000,000₫ deposit or a copy of your passport, and never keep the original. Travel insurance is a separate question; check whether your policy covers riding a motor vehicle.
When to take a petrol scooter instead
Seeing Hoi An by electric scooter is the right call for most days in town, but not for all of them. We would rather tell you now than rescue you on the road.
- My Son Sanctuary (38.2 km each way): within range on paper, but the last stretch climbs and the round trip leaves little margin. See My Son by motorbike.
- Da Nang and the Hai Van Pass: fast traffic on the coast road, then a long climb. Both are petrol days.
- Two heavy riders and a full day of riding: the range drops sharply with weight. Take a 125 cc scooter if you hold a valid licence.
Not sure which suits your plan? Our comparison of bicycle vs e-bike vs motorbike in Hoi An sets them side by side, and the whole petrol fleet is on motorbike rental in Hoi An.

Hoi An by electric scooter: FAQ
Is it easy to explore Hoi An by electric scooter?
Yes. Hoi An is flat river delta and most sights are within 7 km of the Old Town: Thanh Ha pottery village is 2.9 km away, Tra Que 3.2 km, An Bang beach 4.6 km and the Bay Mau coconut forest 7.1 km. A VinFast electric scooter covers all of them several times over on one charge.
How far can an electric scooter go on one charge in Hoi An?
VinFast quotes 205 km for the Evo200 Lite at 30 km/h with one light rider, and 133 km at 50 km/h. With two adults on Hoi An roads, plan on about 100 km. Keep the far end of your day within about 20 km of town.
Can I ride an electric scooter into Hoi An Old Town?
Not during walking-street hours. An electric scooter is a motor vehicle, so it is kept out from 9:00 to 11:00 and from 15:00 to 21:30 in summer (21:00 in winter), exactly like a petrol scooter. A pedal-assist electric bicycle counts as a bicycle and may go in.
Do I need a licence to ride an electric scooter in Hoi An?
No, if the scooter has a motor of 4 kW or less and a top speed of 50 km/h or less, under Law 36/2024/QH15. Riders must be at least 16. The VinFast Evo200 Lite (1,500 W, 49 km/h) and our smaller electric scooters are inside that limit.
Where can I charge an electric scooter in Hoi An?
Many hotels do not allow scooter charging for fire-safety reasons, so ask first. If you rent from us, bring the scooter to 84 Phan Chau Trinh and we swap or top up the battery free. Riders on other scooters can charge with us for a flat 50,000₫.
Can I ride an electric scooter from Hoi An to Da Nang?
Dragon Bridge is 27.2 km each way, so it is within range, but the coast road carries fast buses and trucks and a 49 km/h scooter is the slowest thing on it. We suggest the Marble Mountains (18 km) as the furthest e-scooter ride and a petrol scooter for Da Nang.
How much does it cost to rent an electric scooter in Hoi An?
At our shop a pedal-assist electric bicycle is 100,000₫ a day, the Electric Mi-ni Baby 120,000₫, the Mini Electric Scooter 150,000₫ and the VinFast Evo200 Lite 200,000₫. Rentals of seven days or more are 10% off, and hotel delivery starts at 30,000₫.
