Hoi An to Ha Long Bay: Making the Noon Boarding

Getting from Hoi An to Ha Long Bay is 960 km and two legs, and almost every cruise closes boarding at midday. Here is how to make that deadline — and the Hai Phong route that makes it easy.

The deadline that shapes the trip

№ 01Hoi An to Ha Long Bay: no direct route, one deadline

There is no direct bus, train or flight from Hoi An to Ha Long Bay. It is 960 km, the length of the country’s northern half, and every route is a flight to Hanoi or Hai Phong followed by two or three hours of expressway.

What makes this trip different from every other route out of Hoi An is that you are not travelling to a town, you are travelling to a boat. Overnight cruises check in between about 11:30 and 12:30 and leave the pier by early afternoon. Miss it and there is no later sailing — you lose the night. So the planning question is not “how do I get to Ha Long”, it is “how do I stand at Tuan Chau Marina before noon”.

Note that no cruise price includes getting you there from Hoi An. Most cruise operators sell a Hanoi transfer as an add-on, usually 400.000–600.000₫ per person each way in a shared van, and that transfer starts in Hanoi — not at the airport, and never in Hoi An.

№ 03Step one: Da Nang to Hanoi

Every route starts the same way: get to Da Nang, 30 km from Hoi An, and fly north. Da Nang to Hanoi takes 1 hour 20 minutes and there are flights most hours of the day from around 700.000₫ when booked ahead. Our Hoi An to Hanoi guide covers that leg in detail, including the overland options if you have the time.

Allow properly for the front end. Hoi An to Da Nang airport is 45 minutes by taxi or private car, an hour if you leave during the morning school run, and domestic check-in closes 40 minutes before departure. For a 06:30 flight you are leaving your hotel at 04:30. That is the real cost of the same-day plan.

№ 04The Hai Phong shortcut

Almost every guide sends you through Hanoi, and almost every guide is a few years out of date. Da Nang also flies direct to Hai Phong, and Cat Bi airport is 75 km from Ha Long City against Noi Bai’s 165 km — an hour and a quarter of driving instead of nearly three.

That single change is what turns a frantic same-day trip into a calm one. A morning flight into Hai Phong puts you at a Ha Long pier well before the boarding window, with no Hanoi traffic in between. If you are boarding on Lan Ha Bay from Got pier the saving is bigger still — Got is barely 40 km from Cat Bi.

The catch

Hai Phong has far fewer flights than Hanoi, usually a handful a day rather than one an hour, so there is no second chance if yours is cancelled. Check the schedule before you commit, and do not book the last flight that could still make the boarding.

№ 05Hanoi to Ha Long on the CT06

The old road to Ha Long took four to five hours through Hai Duong and every town on the way. The CT06 Ha Long–Hai Phong expressway, joined to the Hanoi–Hai Phong motorway, cut that to about two and a half hours for 165 km, and it is the reason a same-day trip is possible at all.

From HanoiWhat it isFare
Limousine van9–11 seats, hotel pickup in the Old Quarter, hourly from about 07:00~250.000–350.000₫
Cruise shuttleSold by your cruise operator, times matched to boarding~400.000–600.000₫
Public busMy Dinh or Gia Lam station to Bai Chay bus station~120.000–180.000₫
Private carAirport door to pier door, no city detour~2.000.000–3.000.000₫ per car
SeaplaneHai Phong or Hanoi to Ha Long, scenic, weather-dependentFrom ~4.500.000₫

If you are landing at Noi Bai and boarding the same day, book a private car to meet you at arrivals and go straight to the pier. Noi Bai is north of Hanoi and Ha Long is east of it, so the airport transfer is the one leg where skipping the city centre genuinely saves you an hour.

№ 06Which pier: Tuan Chau, Hon Gai or Got

This is where people go wrong, because “Ha Long” is three separate departure points 20 to 60 km apart, and your ticket names one of them.

PierServesFrom HanoiFrom Cat Bi
Tuan Chau MarinaMost Ha Long Bay cruises and day boats~2.5–3 h~1.5 h
Hon Gai International Cruise PortLarger and newer cruise ships, Bai Tu Long routes~2.5 h~1.5 h
Got pier (Hai Phong)Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba boats~3 h~45 min
Read the pier name on your booking

Turning up at Tuan Chau for a boat leaving from Got is a two-hour drive you cannot make in time, and it happens constantly. Confirm the pier and the check-in time in writing with your operator before you book flights around it.

№ 07Ha Long Bay or Lan Ha Bay?

They are the same limestone landscape — the same drowned karst range, either side of an administrative line. What differs is the traffic. Ha Long Bay is the UNESCO name everyone books, with hundreds of boats on the water and the famous caves and floating villages. Lan Ha Bay, south of Cat Ba island, has a fraction of the boats, better swimming, and beaches you can actually land on.

Coming from Hoi An, Lan Ha has a practical advantage on top of the quiet: it boards from Got pier, which is 45 minutes from the Hai Phong flight rather than three hours from Hanoi. If your reason for going is the scenery rather than ticking off the name, it is the easier trip and usually the better one. Travellers who want mountains as well as water usually pair the bay with Sapa or the Ha Giang loop, both reached from the same Hanoi base.

№ 08Van Don airport, and why not to count on it

People find Van Don International Airport on a map, see that it is in Quang Ninh province 50 km east of Ha Long, and assume it solves the problem. It does not. There has never been a Da Nang to Van Don flight, and the airport’s thin domestic schedule has been shrinking — Vietnam Airlines suspended its Van Don–Ho Chi Minh City service from 1 April 2026. Treat it as an airport that exists rather than one you can use.

One piece of good news on the administrative side. When Vietnam cut its provinces from 63 to 34 on 1 July 2025, Quang Ninh was one of the eleven left untouched — no merger, no new name, no moved capital. Ha Long City is still Ha Long City in Quang Ninh province, so unlike much of the country, every address, permit and booking form here still says what it said last year.

№ 09When to go, and how long to stay

Ha Long has a real winter, which Hoi An does not. From December to February it is grey, drizzly and often 12–15°C, with fog that hides the karsts you came to photograph. It is also the cheapest and quietest time, and the mist is beautiful in its own right — just do not expect the postcard.

SeasonWhat it is like
Mar–MayThe best window. Warm, clear, calm water, before the domestic crowds.
Jun–AugHot and swimmable, but peak Vietnamese holiday season and typhoon risk.
Sep–NovExcellent. Clear skies from late September, cooling through November.
Dec–FebCold, foggy, cheap. Pack a jacket you would not need in Hoi An.
Cruises get cancelled

The port authority suspends sailings when a storm warning is issued, most often between June and September. Operators reschedule or refund, but they cannot put you on the water. If Ha Long is the centrepiece of your trip, build a spare day into the plan rather than flying back to Hoi An the next morning.

On length: a two-day, one-night cruise is the minimum that is worth the journey, and three days with two nights is what gets you past the day-boat crowds into the quieter bays. Counting travel from Hoi An, budget three to four days door to door.

№ 10FAQ

How do I get from Hoi An to Ha Long Bay?

Fly from Da Nang to Hanoi or Hai Phong, then drive to the pier. From Hanoi it is 165 km and about two and a half hours on the CT06 expressway; from Hai Phong it is 75 km and about an hour and a quarter. There is no direct bus, train or flight from Hoi An to Ha Long.

How far is Hoi An from Ha Long Bay?

About 960 km by road. Hoi An is on the central coast and Ha Long is in the far northeast, so the journey is always a flight plus a road leg rather than a single drive.

Can I do Hoi An to Ha Long Bay in one day?

Yes, but only with the first flight out of Da Nang and a private car waiting at the airport. Cruises close check-in between about 11:30 and 12:30, which means a 04:30 hotel departure in Hoi An. Flying the evening before and sleeping in Hanoi is far less stressful.

Is there an airport at Ha Long Bay?

Van Don International Airport is 50 km east of Ha Long, but it has no flights from Da Nang and its domestic schedule has been shrinking, with Vietnam Airlines suspending the Van Don to Ho Chi Minh City route from 1 April 2026. Plan on Noi Bai in Hanoi or Cat Bi in Hai Phong instead.

Which pier do Ha Long cruises leave from?

Most Ha Long Bay boats leave from Tuan Chau Marina, larger ships and Bai Tu Long routes from Hon Gai International Cruise Port, and Lan Ha Bay boats from Got pier near Hai Phong. They are up to 60 km apart, so confirm the pier name on your booking before you plan flights.

Should I choose Ha Long Bay or Lan Ha Bay?

Lan Ha is the same limestone scenery with far fewer boats, better swimming and real beaches, and it boards from Got pier, which is only 45 minutes from Hai Phong airport. Choose Ha Long Bay if you want the famous caves and the UNESCO name, Lan Ha if you want the quiet version.

How much does the trip from Hoi An to Ha Long Bay cost?

Budget roughly 700.000₫ for the flight from Da Nang if booked ahead, plus 250.000 to 350.000₫ for a limousine van from Hanoi, or 2.000.000 to 3.000.000₫ per car for a private transfer. The cruise itself is separate and never includes travel from Hoi An.

Road distances were measured from Hoi An Old Town to Ha Long City via Hanoi, and from Noi Bai and Cat Bi airports to the Ha Long piers; times assume normal traffic and no long stops. Flight, van and transfer fares follow airline and operator listings current at the time of writing and move with the season. The Van Don route suspension and the 2025 provincial reorganisation, effective 1 July 2025, are as reported in the Vietnamese press.
