Hoi An to Sapa is 1,110 km and there is no direct anything. The trick almost nobody mentions: a minivan leaves straight from Noi Bai airport, so you never enter Hanoi at all.
№ 01The honest answer: there is no direct route
Sapa is 1,110 km from Hoi An by road, in the mountains near the Chinese border, and there is no direct bus, no direct train and no flight between the two. Anyone selling you a “Hoi An to Sapa” ticket is selling you a flight or a bus to Hanoi plus a second leg, packaged as one price.
That is not a problem, it is just a thing to plan around. The journey is really two decisions: how you get to Hanoi, and how you cover the last 315 km. Get the second one right and the whole trip takes a day rather than two.

The short version: fly to Hanoi and take a minivan straight from the airport. Everything else is either slower, or a deliberate choice to make the journey part of the trip.
№ 03Step one: Da Nang to Hanoi
Da Nang to Hanoi is one of the busiest air routes in Vietnam, with fares from around 700.000₫ booked ahead and a flight time of about an hour and twenty minutes. From Hoi An, allow 45 minutes to Da Nang airport on top.
The alternative is the train or a sleeper bus from Da Nang, both sixteen to nineteen hours — covered in our Hoi An to Hanoi guide. On a route where you still have 315 km to go at the far end, the overland version turns a one-day journey into a two-day one. This is a fly-it route.
№ 04The Noi Bai shortcut nobody mentions
This is the single most useful thing on this page. Most guides tell you to fly to Hanoi, travel into the Old Quarter, and catch a bus from there. You do not have to.
Minivans run directly from Noi Bai airport to Sapa, so you can walk out of arrivals and get on one. That saves you the 30 km run into central Hanoi, the wait, and the 30 km back out past the airport again — well over two hours of pure backtracking, because the road to Sapa starts on the airport’s side of the city.
№ 05Limousine van or sleeper bus?
Once you are on the ground in the north, the road to Sapa is the same road for everyone: the CT05 Noi Bai–Lao Cai expressway, 245 km of toll road that opened in 2014 and turned an eight-hour ordeal into a comfortable five. What differs is the vehicle you sit in.

Take the limousine van by day and the cabin sleeper by night. The last 38 km from the expressway exit up to Sapa is a mountain climb with switchbacks, and it is the part that decides whether you arrive rested or green. On a daytime run it is the best hour of the journey; on a full-size sleeper bus at 2 a.m. it is the worst.
Book the front half of the lower deck. The rear axle over the last 38 km throws the back berths around, and the upper deck amplifies every corner.
№ 06The night train to Lao Cai
Vietnam Railways runs overnight trains from Hanoi to Lao Cai station, 296 km north, leaving in the late evening and arriving between 05:00 and 06:30. Lao Cai is not Sapa — the town is 38 km further up the mountain, another hour by shared minibus (about 50.000₫) or taxi.
The trains carry two very different products. The state carriages are hard seat and basic four-berth sleepers from roughly 250.000 to 700.000₫. Attached to the same train are privately fitted tourist carriages — Chapa Express, Victoria, King Express and others — with wood panelling, proper bedding and two-berth cabins, from about 1.100.000₫ to over 3.000.000₫ per person.
The state sleepers are cheap and they get you there, but the bedding is tired, the toilets at the end of an eight-hour night are grim, and the noise makes real sleep unlikely. The private cabins on the same train cost two to three times as much and are worth it, exactly the way the heritage carriages are worth it on the Da Nang line.
The train’s real argument is that it saves you a hotel night and delivers you at dawn. Its weakness is the 38 km tail: you land in Lao Cai half asleep and still have a mountain road to climb. The bus puts you in the middle of Sapa town. Choose the train for the experience, the bus for efficiency.
№ 07Why Sapa has no airport
People search for flights to Sapa every day and there are none, because Sapa has no airport. It sits at 1,500 m in the Hoang Lien Son range, hemmed in by Fansipan and permanently fogged for months at a time — about the worst terrain in Vietnam for a runway. A Sa Pa airport in the Lao Cai valley has been planned and announced for years; nothing flies from it today, so plan on Noi Bai.
One more thing no English guide has caught up with. On 1 July 2025 Vietnam cut its provinces from 63 to 34, and Lao Cai was merged with Yen Bai. The combined province keeps the name Lao Cai, but its administrative centre is now Yen Bai city, 150 km southeast. Nothing about the road, the train or Sapa itself has changed — but an address, a permit or a booking form saying “Lao Cai province” now covers a much bigger area than it did, so read the town name, not the province.
№ 08Riding there, and why not from Hoi An
Sapa is superb riding country, and people ask us every week whether they can take one of our bikes there. The answer is no, and it is not a rule we invented to be difficult — 1,110 km each way is eight to ten days of riding, on a 110cc automatic scooter built for beach roads, with our nearest support 1,100 km behind you.
What works is the split most experienced riders use: ride the middle of Vietnam, fly the long gaps. From Hoi An the good rides are the Hai Van Pass, the Ho Chi Minh Road west of town, and the run down to Quang Ngai. Then fly to Hanoi and rent locally in Sapa or Ha Giang, where the shops know the mountain roads, the bikes are geared for climbing and a breakdown is a phone call rather than a catastrophe.
If a loop is what you actually want, the Ha Giang loop east of Sapa is the ride people fly to Vietnam for. It is done on a bike rented in Ha Giang town, usually with luggage transferred by the shop — the same logic, one province over.
№ 09When to go, and how long to stay
Sapa has weather Hoi An does not: it gets genuinely cold, down to 5°C in January and occasionally below freezing, with snow on Fansipan most winters. Pack for it. Leaving 30°C Hoi An in a t-shirt and landing in Sapa fog at 8°C is a mistake people make every week.

Give it three nights minimum counting travel, four if you want a proper trek to Ta Van or Lao Chai. Two nights means you spend both of them recovering from the journey. Combine it with Ha Giang or a cruise on Ha Long Bay and you have a solid ten-day northern trip that pairs naturally with a week on the central coast.

How do I get from Hoi An to Sapa?
Fly from Da Nang to Hanoi, then take a limousine van, sleeper bus or night train for the last 315 km. There is no direct bus, train or flight between Hoi An and Sapa. The fastest version is a morning flight plus a minivan picked up at Noi Bai airport, which gets you to Sapa in about seven to eight hours door to door.
How far is Hoi An from Sapa?
About 1,110 km by road, or roughly 800 km in a straight line. Sapa is in the far north near the Chinese border and Hoi An is on the central coast, so nobody drives it — the trip is a flight to Hanoi plus a five to six hour road leg.
Is there an airport in Sapa?

Should I take the night train or the bus to Sapa?

How much does the trip from Hoi An to Sapa cost?
Budget roughly 700.000₫ for the Da Nang to Hanoi flight if booked ahead, plus 250.000 to 600.000₫ for a bus or 250.000 to 3.000.000₫ for the train depending on the carriage. Doing the whole thing overland by bus is possible for around 900.000₫ but takes 24 to 28 hours.
Can I ride a rented motorbike from Hoi An to Sapa?
You should not. It is 1,110 km each way, eight to ten days of riding on a scooter built for short coastal trips, with no support anywhere near you. Ride the Hai Van Pass and the roads around Hoi An, then fly to Hanoi and rent a bike locally in Sapa or Ha Giang.
Is Sapa still in Lao Cai province?
Yes. Since 1 July 2025 Lao Cai province has been merged with Yen Bai, and the combined province keeps the name Lao Cai with its administrative centre in Yen Bai city. Sapa itself has not moved and the roads, the railway and the town names are unchanged.
Road distances were measured from Hoi An Old Town to Sapa via Hanoi, and from Hanoi to Sapa by the CT05 Noi Bai–Lao Cai expressway; times assume normal traffic and no long stops. Flight, bus and train fares follow airline, operator and Vietnam Railways listings current at the time of writing and move with the season. The merger of Lao Cai and Yen Bai follows the 2025 provincial reorganisation effective 1 July 2025.
