If your home licence does not qualify in Vietnam — and for most visitors it does not — an electric bike is the answer. Electric two-wheelers in the VinFast class need no licence and no International Driving Permit, so you ride legally with nothing more than your passport. Why an electric bike in Hoi An

Hoi An is flat, compact and slow. The Ancient Town, An Bang beach, Tra Que vegetable village and the Cam Thanh coconut forest all sit within about 6 km of the shop, and the lanes between them are paddy-field roads where a petrol engine feels like overkill. An electric bike matches that pace: silent past the rice fields, no fumes in the lantern streets, and no petrol stops. The other reason is legal. Riding a 110cc scooter without a valid Vietnamese-recognised licence risks a fine and voids insurance; an electric bike in this class does not need one. For many of our guests that alone settles the choice.

Which electric bike suits you

• Two of you, several stops a day — the VinFast. Two proper seats, 50 km/h top speed and enough storage for a beach bag; it keeps up with Hoi An traffic without effort.
• Riding solo, mostly the Old Town and An Bang — the mini e-scooter. Small enough to weave through the market and park anywhere; battery sized for town.
• You would rather pedal — the pedal-assist e-bicycle. The motor flattens the headwind on the beach road and the 3 km to Tra Que; it uses the bicycle lanes.

Licence rules for foreigners

Plan an electric bike around town and the villages within about 10 km — the Ancient Town, An Bang, Cua Dai, Tra Que, Cam Thanh, Thanh Ha pottery village — all under 6 km from the shop. That is a full day of riding on one charge. When the gauge drops, ride back to 84 Phan Chau Trinh and we swap the battery for a charged one in about two minutes, free, as many times as you like. Overnight, charge from any wall socket at your hotel.
