Why a Hoi An 50cc bike rental is the no-licence answer
Most travellers arrive in Hoi An wanting a scooter and discover a problem at the rental shop: the licence. A home driving licence for a car does not cover motorbikes here, and an International Driving Permit only helps if it is the right kind. People end up either walking, paying for taxis all week, or riding something they are not licensed for and hoping.
The 50cc is the way out of that. Vietnamese law treats motorbikes under 50cc differently from everything above, and the practical effect is simple: you do not need a motorbike licence to ride one. That is not a loophole or a grey area — it is written into the road traffic law, and it is why every rental shop in town keeps a rack of them.
What you give up is speed, and in Hoi An that turns out to cost you almost nothing. The Old Town is a walking zone with a 20 km/h fringe, the lanes out to Tra Que and Cam Thanh are single-track and full of bicycles, and the coast road to An Bang is flat. A 50cc does all of it comfortably.
What the law actually says about 50cc bikes
Three rules, and they are worth getting right rather than taking a shop’s word for:
- Under 50cc, no motorbike licence is required. This applies to petrol bikes with an engine below 50cc and to electric bikes of equivalent power.
- The rider must be at least 16. There is no licence, but there is an age floor, and it is the part people forget. A fifteen-year-old cannot legally ride one, licence or no licence.
- Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger, on every motorbike in Vietnam, including a 50cc and including a five-minute ride.

Hoi An 50cc bike rental: the price, and what is in it
200,000₫ for 24 hours. That is the rate, it does not change by season, and there is nothing added at the end.
| Item | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 50cc scooter, per day | 200,000₫ | A full 24 hours from pick-up, not “until 5pm”. |
| Two helmets | Included | Fitted at handover. |
| Delivery to your hotel | Free | Central Hoi An. Further out, ask — usually still free. |
| Collection at the end | Free | Wherever you agree with us. |
| Fuel | Not included | A 50cc costs very little to fill; a day of town riding is small change. |
| Deposit | None | ID or passport shown for verification, then handed straight back. |
| Cancellation | Free | Up to 12 hours before pick-up. |
Weekly and monthly rates are lower per day — if you are staying a while, say so when you book rather than paying by the day and discovering afterwards that there was a better number.
Two details about the day that people get caught by elsewhere. First, 24 hours means 24 hours: pick up at 4pm and the bike is yours until 4pm tomorrow, not until closing time tonight. Second, a rental that runs a little over is not automatically a second day — message us, and an hour or two either side is usually nothing.
The honest test of a rental price is whether the number you are told in the morning is the number you pay in the evening. Ours is. No fuel deposit, no cleaning fee, no “late by twenty minutes” charge.
Which 50cc bikes we rent
Two models, both automatic, both genuinely under 50cc rather than badged that way:
SYM Shark 50cc — the workhorse. Light, low seat, very forgiving at walking pace, which is what you want threading through the market end of town. This is the one most first-time riders end up on.
Kymco Like 50cc — the retro-styled one, a little roomier under the seat, the same easy ride. Popular with people who want the photograph as well as the transport.
Both are serviced on a schedule rather than when something breaks, and both go out fuelled and cleaned. You can see the rest of what is on the rack on our 50cc category page.

Rent a 50cc Bike in Hoi An Today! What a 50cc can do — and where it runs out
A 50cc tops out around 50 km/h with one rider and noticeably less with two. That is the whole story, and everything else follows from it.
It is excellent for: the Old Town and its fringe, An Bang and Cua Dai beaches, Tra Que herb village, the Cam Thanh coconut lanes, the ceramic village at Thanh Ha, and the run up the coast as far as the Marble Mountains, 18.1 km from the Old Town.
It is the wrong bike for: the Hai Van Pass, My Son and back in a day, anything on the QL1A highway, and any trip where you will be two-up with luggage on a long climb. For those, take a 110cc or 125cc automatic — and that means bringing the right licence.
Booking, delivery and getting the bike back to us
Booking works the way everything else in this town works: by message. Send us the date, how many bikes, and your hotel on Zalo (0935 439 306) or WhatsApp (+84 935 206 306). There is no form, no card, no prepayment — we confirm, and that is the booking.
Book the night before if you can. Not because we run out often, but because delivery slots between 8am and 10am fill up first and that is when everybody wants to start riding. A message at nine in the evening gets you the bike at your door at eight the next morning.
On the day, we bring the bike to your hotel inside central Hoi An at no charge, fit the helmets, walk you round the bike, and take a photo of it as it stands so there is no argument later about a scratch that was already there. You ride away with the key, the helmets and our roadside number.
At the end, you do not have to bring it back to the shop. Tell us where you will be and we collect it — your hotel, a café, wherever suits the end of your day. If you need to leave before we open, park it at the hotel and message us where the key is.
Documents, deposit and the small print
Documents. An ID card or passport, shown at handover for verification. We do not keep passports — you show it, we note the name, you put it back in your pocket. A shop that wants to hold your passport for the week is a shop to walk away from.
Deposit. None on a standard 50cc day rental.
Damage. If the bike is damaged or lost, you cover the repair or the actual value of the bike. This is the ordinary term in every rental contract in Vietnam; the difference between shops is whether they tell you before or after. Check the bike, take your own photos, and the question rarely comes up.
Traffic fines are the rider’s, which is one more reason to be clear about the licence question before you set off rather than at a checkpoint.
Where to ride in Hoi An on a 50cc
A 50cc rewards a certain kind of day: short hops, frequent stops, no motorway. Four that work particularly well:
- The beach loop. Out to An Bang for breakfast, north along the sand road, back through the rice fields. Half a morning, entirely flat.
- Tra Que and Cam Thanh. Herb gardens one way, coconut water palms the other, both on lanes where 30 km/h is already too fast.
- Thanh Ha and the craft villages, west of the Old Town — pottery, then the long way home along the river.
- The Marble Mountains, 18.1 km up the coast road, the furthest a 50cc should reasonably go and back in a day.
Parking in Hoi An is the one thing to plan for: the Old Town core is closed to bikes during walking-street hours, so use the guarded lots on the edge — a few thousand đồng and your bike is watched while you walk. Take the ticket seriously; it is what you hand back to collect the bike, and replacing a lost one is a slow conversation in two languages.
One habit worth picking up on day one of a Hoi An 50cc bike rental: fill up before you leave town rather than on the way back. The petrol stations on Cua Dai and Hai Ba Trung are quick and metered; the roadside bottles you see in the lanes are convenient but cost more per litre and you cannot see what is in them. A 50cc tank is small enough that the difference is trivial in money and useful in peace of mind.
And ride in the morning. Between roughly 11am and 3pm the light is flat, the heat is genuinely tiring on an open bike, and every coach party in the area is parked where you want to be. The same loop at seven in the morning is a different town.
50cc vs electric scooter vs 125cc automatic
| 50cc petrol | Electric scooter | 125cc automatic | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Licence | Not needed | Not needed | Required |
| Day rate | 200,000₫ | from 150,000₫ | from 110,000₫ |
| Range | Refuel anywhere | Battery — plan around it | Refuel anywhere |
| Top speed | ~50 km/h | ~40–50 km/h | Highway capable |
| Best for | Town, beaches, short coast runs | Old Town and the lanes | Day trips, passes, two-up with bags |
The honest summary: if you have the licence, a 125cc automatic is cheaper per day and better at everything except parking. If you do not, the choice is between a 50cc and an electric scooter — and the deciding question is range. Staying in town, take the electric. Going as far as the Marble Mountains or riding two-up all day, take the 50cc and stop worrying about the battery.

Questions we get asked
Do I need a licence to rent a 50cc bike in Hoi An?
No. Motorbikes under 50cc do not require a motorbike licence in Vietnam. You do need to be at least 16 years old, and helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger.
How much is a 50cc bike rental in Hoi An?
200,000₫ for 24 hours, fuel not included. Two helmets, delivery in central Hoi An and collection at the end are all included, and there is no deposit.
What documents do I need?
An ID card or passport, shown at handover for verification. We note the name and hand it straight back — we do not keep passports.
How fast does a 50cc go?
About 50 km/h with one rider, less with two. That is plenty for the Old Town, the beaches and the coast road, and not enough for the Hai Van Pass or the highway.
Can two people ride one 50cc?
Yes, and two helmets come with the bike. Expect slower going two-up, especially on any rise, and leave a little earlier than you would on a 125cc.
Can I take a 50cc to the Marble Mountains or Da Nang?
The Marble Mountains, yes — 18.1 km up the coast road and back is a comfortable half-day. Da Nang city is possible but slow on a 50cc; for that run most people take a bigger bike.
Do you deliver the bike to my hotel?
Yes, free anywhere in central Hoi An, and we collect it at the end from wherever you agree with us. If you are further out, ask — it is usually still free.
What if I need to cancel?
Free cancellation or change up to 12 hours before pick-up. If something unexpected happens closer to the time, message us — we would rather sort it out than hold you to a booking.
Prices checked September 2026 and quoted in Vietnamese đồng. The distance to the Marble Mountains was measured on Google Maps from Hoi An Old Town via the coast road. Licence and helmet rules are given as they apply to bikes under 50cc in Vietnam and are summarised, not quoted — if your situation is unusual, ask us before you ride.
