What the Hoi An Memories Show actually is

It is an outdoor spectacle, not a theatre piece. The stage is a stretch of riverbank and shallow water on Hoi An Memories Island in Cam Nam, about 25,000 m² of it, running close to a kilometre end to end, with a full-size replica of the Japanese Covered Bridge, rows of merchant houses, a trading junk and a lot of water for reflections. More than five hundred performers work it. The whole thing lasts sixty minutes and starts, punctually, at 20:00.

The subject is four hundred years of the town: farming, a royal wedding, a woman waiting for a ship, the port at its multicultural height, and a finale of ao dai. There is no dialogue you need to follow, which is why it works for an audience that does not speak Vietnamese — it moves on light, water, music and mass choreography rather than on words.

Two practical facts do most of the damage when people get them wrong: it is dark on Tuesdays, and the gates are on the far side of the river from the Old Town, so the walk home after 21:00 is longer than you think. Both are dealt with below.

Hoi An Memories Show tickets and prices in 2026

There are three seating classes and two prices for each: what you pay online in advance, and what you pay standing at the counter. The gap is roughly 10–13%, which on a family of four is a decent dinner.

A word on the numbers. The prices above are the ones the official park and the main Vietnamese ticket agents publish for 2026, and they agree with each other; some travel blogs still quote 350.000₫ for Eco, which was a promotional rate and is not what you will be charged today. International platforms sell the same seats in dollars — the cheapest bundles start around US$31 — and the price you see there already includes their booking fee.

Which seat to buy

This is the question we get asked at the shop counter, and the honest answer is that the middle tier is the one to take.

Eco puts you closest to the water and lowest down. Faces are close, the mist and the reflections are right in front of you, and the price is the lowest — but the choreography is the point of this show, and from the front rows a hundred people moving in formation reads as a wall of people.

High sits above and behind, and from there the patterns resolve: the lines of lantern-carriers crossing the bridge, the boats coming in from the right, the whole width of the stage in one frame. That is also where a camera wants to be. VIP is a small covered block at the top with the widest view and, on a wet night, the only dry seats in the house; it costs roughly double Eco, and what you are really buying is the roof and the space.

Wherever you sit, ask for a block near the centre rather than the wings. The stage is a kilometre wide and the ends of it are genuinely far away from the corner seats.

The five acts of the Hoi An Memories Show, and the history in them

The show is built as five scenes. Knowing what each one is about turns it from a light display into a story, and the second scene in particular is real history that most visitors have never heard.

1. Sinh Menh (Life). The founding: a young family, rice being cut, cloth being woven, a village becoming a town. It is the quietest act and it sets the palette — white cloth, water, candlelight.

2. Dam Cuoi (The Wedding). The marriage of the Vietnamese princess Huyen Tran to Che Man, king of Champa, in 1306. It was a diplomatic match: the bride price was two Cham prefectures, O and Ly, the land that became Thuan Hoa and eventually the coast you are sitting on. Che Man died the following year. The act is staged as a procession across the water, and it is the most visually extravagant part of the hour.

3. Den va Bien (Lantern and Sea). A woman waits on the shore for a ship that does not come back. This is the lantern act — the one with hundreds of paper lanterns and the reflection doubling every light — and the emotional centre of the show.

4. Hoi Nhap (Integration). Hoi An as the port it was in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese and Dutch merchants, junks arriving, the bridge crowded, silk and ceramics changing hands. The wedding scene is not decoration. That marriage is the reason this coast is Vietnamese, and the show stages it on the water in front of you.

The park before the show

Hoi An Impression Theme Park opens in the afternoon and the same ticket gets you in. It is a built set rather than a heritage site — recreated streets, a market, a fishing village, a Cham corner — and through the early evening a rolling programme of small performances runs across it: drumming, folk singing, bai choi, dance, craft demonstrations. Most people find fifteen or twenty of them between 17:00 and 19:00 if they walk.

Two things to do while you are in there. Eat something before the show, because the queues at the food stalls at 19:30 are long and the show does not stop for you. And find your block early: the seating is numbered, the tiers are big, and the last ten minutes before 20:00 are a crush of several thousand people looking for the same staircase you are.

Whether the park is worth an afternoon on its own is a fair question; on a hot day it is a lot of concrete and no shade. Arriving at 17:00–17:30 is the sweet spot — late enough for the heat to drop, early enough to see the mini shows and eat without hurrying.

Getting to the Hoi An Memories Show — and, harder, getting home

The island is in Cam Nam, across the Hoai river from the Old Town: 2.3 km from our shop at 84 Phan Chau Trinh, five minutes by road, fifteen to twenty on foot from the market end of the Old Town if you like walking. Coming from Da Nang it is around 30 km, an hour on a scooter.

The problem is 21:00. Several thousand people come out of one gate at the same moment, in a village lane, in the dark. Taxis and Grabs that were plentiful at seven are being fought over at nine, and surge pricing is real. Three ways to deal with it, in order of how well they work:

• Have your own two wheels. Park at the venue, walk out with everyone else, and ride home in five minutes past the queue. This is what locals do.
• Book the return leg before you go in, not after. Any driver who brought you will happily come back at 21:15 for an agreed price.
• Wait it out. Twenty minutes in the park after the finale and the crush is gone — the ride you could not get at 21:05 is easy at 21:25.

We rent the scooters, e-bikes and bicycles people use for exactly this, and we will say the obvious thing: if you have had a drink at dinner, do not ride. Vietnam’s drink-drive limit is effectively zero and the checks around Hoi An in the evening are routine.

Weather, what to wear, and the rain question

The seating is open to the sky except for the VIP block, and the show runs in light rain. In the wet months a plastic poncho is sold at the gate for small money, and there is nowhere to shelter once you are in your row, so take one from the hotel if you have it. Umbrellas are not welcome in a packed tier for the obvious reason.

It is an outdoor evening beside water, so mosquitoes are a fact; put repellent on before you leave. Dress is casual — this is not a theatre — but the tiers are concrete steps and the walk from the gate to a far block is a few hundred metres, so wear shoes you can climb in rather than the sandals you wore to dinner.

If a typhoon or a serious storm is forecast, check before you travel: performances are occasionally cancelled and the park handles refunds or date changes case by case. In the October–December flood season that is worth a phone call the same afternoon rather than a guess.

Is the Hoi An Memories Show worth it? An honest answer

We do not sell these tickets and get nothing if you go, so here is the balanced version.

What is genuinely impressive: the scale, which no photograph conveys; the lantern act; the discipline of five hundred people moving in unison; and the fact that a foreign audience follows all of it without a word of language. Families with teenagers, and anyone who has already done the Old Town, the tailors and the beach and wants an evening with something in it, tend to come back happy.

What people complain about: the price, which is high by Vietnamese standards and roughly what a good dinner for two costs; the crowd management at the entrance and the exit; the commentary, which is nationalist in tone and blunt in translation; and the sense — fair enough — that the recreated park is not the real thing when the real thing is fifteen minutes away and free to walk through. If you have three nights in Hoi An and one of them is for something big, it is a good use of one. If your budget is tight, the lantern-lit streets on a full-moon night cost nothing and are more atmospheric.

Whichever way you go, book online rather than at the gate, and pick a night that is not Tuesday.

Planning the evening, hour by hour

One more piece of sequencing. If you are going to do the show and the Old Town heritage sites on the same day, do the sites in the morning and the show at night — both in one afternoon is four hours of walking in the heat and you will enjoy neither.
