Summer in Hoi An is the season of two towns. At six in the morning An Bang Beach belongs to fishermen and swimmers, the Ancient Town is quiet and the air is almost cool. By eleven the sun is fierce, the lanes are full of tour groups and every shaded café seat is taken. People who have a bad summer trip usually tried to do the second town at the time of day the first one exists.

Hoi An in summer rewards anyone who works with the clock rather than against it. This guide covers what the heat actually feels like from May to August, when the crowds peak, where to cool off within a short ride of town, and how to plan each day so you see the best of it. The weather figures are long-term averages, the distances are measured on Google Maps from our shop at 84 Phan Chau Trinh, and none of it depends on which year you come.

Hoi An in summer at a glance

“Summer” in Hoi An means May to August. It sits between the mild dry months of February to April and the rainy season that starts in September. The whole period is hot and mostly dry, but the four months are not the same, and the differences matter when you choose dates.

If you can pick your dates, May is the sweet spot of Hoi An in summer: the beach season has opened, the sea is flat, and the European and Vietnamese holiday crowds have not yet arrived. July is the busiest month. August is still good, but it is the last reliable beach month before the weather turns, and storms become more likely towards the end.

What the heat is really like

The thermometer says 33°C, which does not sound extreme. What visitors underestimate is the combination: high humidity, almost no shade on the roads outside town, and a sun that sits nearly overhead in the middle of the day. From about 10:30 to 15:00 the heat on an open road is heavy work, and the stone and tiles of the Old Town store it and give it back into the evening.

The UV is the real danger

The UV index in Hoi An reaches 12 in summer, the top of the scale. People burn in twenty minutes without noticing, because the breeze on a scooter keeps the skin feeling cool. Forearms, the backs of hands, the neck below the helmet and the tops of feet in sandals are where riders burn most. Cover them rather than relying on sunscreen alone.

Afternoon storms, not rainy days

Summer rain in Hoi An rarely spoils a whole day. It comes as a short, heavy storm, usually in the afternoon: the sky darkens, it pours for twenty or thirty minutes, and then the sun is out again and the streets steam. Pull in under a shop awning, order a coffee and wait. The rain poncho under your scooter seat is for the ride home afterwards, not for riding through the worst of it.

In summer the customers who come back sunburnt and exhausted almost all did the same thing: a long ride starting at eleven. The ones who went at six come back asking where to go tomorrow.

The summer day plan: early, slow, late

Every good summer day in Hoi An has the same shape. Do the outdoor things early, hide from the sun in the middle of the day, and come back out when the light goes gold. It sounds obvious, but it changes what order you do things in.

The midday block is not wasted time. It is when a cooking class in Hoi An, a lantern-making class or a long lunch fits perfectly. Book those for late morning and you have turned the worst hours of the day into the most comfortable.

Beating the summer crowds

Summer is high season for two groups at once. Europeans travel in July and August, and Vietnamese families fill the beaches and hotels during the school holidays from June to August. Add the long weekends and there are a few windows when Hoi An is as busy as it ever gets.

Where the crowds are, and where they are not

Crowds in Hoi An are concentrated in a very small area: a few streets of the Ancient Town, the Japanese Bridge, the lantern boats on the river and the central part of An Bang. Ten minutes on a scooter takes you out of all of it. The lanes of Tra Que (3.2 km from our shop), the pottery workshops of Thanh Ha (3.0 km) and the rice fields between them are quiet even in July.

The same goes for the beaches. If the middle of An Bang is packed, ride a few hundred metres north or south along the sand, or go further to Ha My and Tan Thanh, which see a fraction of the visitors. Our guide to Ha My and Tan Thanh beaches covers the quieter stretches.

Where to cool off near Hoi An

The great advantage of Hoi An in summer is that the sea is at its best exactly when the town is at its hottest. Everything below is within a short ride, and the whole point of having your own bike in summer is being able to get to the water before the sun gets to you.

An Bang and Cua Dai

An Bang is the easy choice: fifteen minutes from the Old Town, beach bars with loungers, lifeguards in season and a gently sloping sandy bottom. The Cham Islands

Summer is the season for Cu Lao Cham. The sea crossing is smooth, the water around the islands is clear, and the boats that often stop for days at a time in autumn run reliably. Basket boats in the coconut forest

Summer evenings and events

Summer evenings are the reason many people love Hoi An in this season. The heat breaks around five, the light over the rice fields turns gold, and by seven the Ancient Town is lit with silk lanterns and the riverbank fills with people who spent the afternoon asleep.

The monthly lantern night

On the 14th day of every lunar month the Old Town switches off its electric street lights in the evening and runs on lanterns and candles alone. Festivals that come round every summer

A few events return most summers, although their exact dates change from year to year. The Da Nang International Fireworks Festival usually runs on several nights across June and July, about an hour’s ride north. Beaches around the region hold summer festivals, and Hoi An’s own calendar of performances, markets and river events is busiest in these months. Which bike for a Hoi An summer

Most summer days in Hoi An are short hops: the beach, the gardens, a café, back to the hotel before noon, out again at dusk. That pattern suits an electric scooter perfectly. You only need a petrol scooter if you plan longer rides such as My Son (38.2 km each way) or the Hai Van Pass.

Riding in the heat: practical tips

Riding a scooter in Hoi An in summer is easy and pleasant if you respect the sun. These are the things we tell every rider who collects a bike from us between May and August.

• Cover up rather than strip down. A thin long-sleeved shirt, light trousers and closed shoes protect you from the UV and from hot exhaust pipes far better than a vest and shorts.
• Drink before you are thirsty. The airflow on a scooter hides how much you sweat. Carry water and stop for a coconut or a sugarcane juice every hour on longer rides.
• Park in the shade. A black seat left in the midday sun gets hot enough to burn. Park under a tree or throw the poncho over the seat.
• Helmet on, always. Every rental from us comes with two helmets; wear them even for the five minutes to the beach.
• Wait out storms. When an afternoon storm hits, pull over under an awning. Visibility drops to almost nothing for a few minutes and the roads flood in low spots.
• Keep evening rides slow. Summer evenings mean more traffic on the beach roads, more people walking, and more riders who have been drinking.
