Every rental shop in Hoi An says “everything included”. It is a nice sentence and it means almost nothing until you know which things are on the list. So instead of a slogan, this page sets out exactly what is included when you rent from us at 84 Phan Chau Trinh, what you pay for on top, and the few things that are never covered by any rental, ours or anyone else’s. Read it once before you book and nothing at the handover will surprise you.

What is included, what is extra, and what is never covered

The short version first. This table is what is included in every Hoi An motorbike rental from Anh Khoa, whether you take a 110,000₫ Suzuki Viva or a 450,000₫ Yamaha XS155R, set against the things that cost extra and the things nobody covers. Prices in the middle column are the ones on our own rental terms and delivery fee page.

Two things stand out once you see it laid out. First, the extras are small and they are all optional: if you walk to the shop, fill up yourself and skip the bodywork cover, the price on the product page is the price you pay. Second, the “never covered” column is the same at every honest shop in Vietnam. A rental that tells you its insurance covers your hospital bill, or that fines are its problem, is selling you something that does not exist.

Helmets and raincoats for two

Every scooter and motorbike leaves the shop with two helmets, one for you and one for a passenger, and you choose your own size from the wall before you ride off. If you want a full-face helmet for a long ride over the Hai Van Pass, say so when you book and we will bring one. Electric bikes and bicycles come with helmets as well.

This is not a courtesy. Helmets have been compulsory for every rider and passenger in Vietnam since December 2007, and the fines today come from Decree 168/2024, in force since 1 January 2025: 400,000–600,000₫ for riding without a helmet, the same again for a passenger without one, and the same for a strap left undone. A helmet you do not fasten counts as no helmet at all, both at a police check and when an insurer reads the accident report.

Under the seat you will find two raincoats, and the bike comes with a phone holder on the handlebar so you can follow Google Maps without holding the phone. Central Vietnam’s rain arrives fast between September and December, and it is worth knowing that riding with an umbrella is its own offence under the same decree, fined 800,000–1,000,000₫. Fuel: one litre free, the rest is yours

Petrol bikes go out with one litre of fuel already in the tank, which is plenty to reach the first petrol station. After that the fuel is yours to buy, which is how nearly every shop in Hoi An works. If you would rather not stop at all on day one, ask for a full tank when you book: we fill it before delivery and you pay for the petrol, nothing more.

Two practical notes. Petrol stations in Vietnam are full service: you stay on the bike, open the seat, say “đầy” (full) or an amount in thousands, and pay the attendant. And since June 2026 the standard grade at the pump is E10 RON 95, so you will not be choosing between half a dozen fuels. Electric scooters and e-bikes need no fuel; charge them overnight at your hotel from a normal wall socket, or swap the battery free at our shop.

Delivery and pickup

Collecting the bike yourself at 84 Phan Chau Trinh costs nothing. That is the one place where what is included is literally everything: you walk in, pick a helmet, sit on two or three bikes and ride away.

If you would rather have the bike brought to you, hotel delivery is a fixed fee per address, and it covers both legs: we bring the bike and we come back for it. In the town centre, within about 5 km of the Old Town, it is 30,000₫. Beach resorts on the An Bang, Cua Dai and Tan Thanh side run from 20,000 to 70,000₫ depending on distance, and our delivery fee page lists the exact price for more than 30 hotels so you can see yours before you book. There is no fuel surcharge and no waiting charge, and deliveries and collections run from 07:00 to 21:00 every day.

Papers that come with the bike, and what you bring

The bike comes with a copy of its registration card (cà vẹt), which police ask for at a checkpoint along with your licence, and a printed copy of the rental contract you can keep for the whole trip. Before you leave, our staff walk around the bike with you, point out any existing scratches and explain the controls. Take photos of the bike from all four sides at that moment; it protects you as much as us.

What you bring is your own driving licence, plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention if your licence is not Vietnamese. Look at the cover: “1968” or “Vienna” is accepted in Vietnam, “1949” or “Geneva” is not. The minimum age is 18. No licence? Our 50cc scooters and electric bicycles need none, and they come with exactly the same helmets, raincoats and support.

The cheapest bike in town is not the one with the lowest daily rate. It is the one where you know, before you sign, what happens when something goes wrong.

Deposit, payment and cancelling

The deposit is 2,000,000₫ (about $80), refunded in full when the bike comes back in the same condition. If you prefer not to leave cash, a copy of your passport, or simply a photo of it taken at the counter, does the same job. We never keep anyone’s original passport, and you should not hand yours to any shop in Vietnam: you need it to check in at hotels, and a shop holding it has all the leverage in a dispute.

The rental itself is paid in full at pickup, in cash (VND) or by bank transfer. Booking more days brings the rate down: 10% off for 7 days or more and about 30% off for 30 days or more, which is why long-stay guests look at our monthly motorbike rental page. Cancelling before pickup is free, with a full refund. Returning a bike early is not refunded unless we agreed it in advance, and a bike returned late is charged one extra day per 24 hours overdue.

Roadside help and the flat-tyre exception

The roadside line, +84 766 766 087, answers 24 hours a day. If the bike breaks down because of a technical fault, help is free anywhere in Hoi An and the nearby beach areas: we repair it where it stands or bring you a replacement bike so the day carries on. Further out, call us anyway; we will tell you the nearest mechanic and what a fair price is.

The one exception worth knowing in advance is the puncture. A flat caused by a nail or glass on the road is the rider’s cost, and any of the small repair stalls you pass every few hundred metres will fix it for 20,000–60,000₫, usually in ten minutes. It is the same rule at every shop in town; we would rather say it here than at the roadside.

Two more things are included that people rarely ask about. If you rent a bicycle or an e-bicycle from us, you can leave your own motorbike in our yard at the shop for free, overnight included, with staff keeping an eye on it. And on a one-way rental to Hue, your first two bags (up to 20 kg per person) travel to the other end free.

Insurance: what the law includes and what 50,000₫ adds

Every bike carries the compulsory third-party civil liability insurance that Vietnamese law requires. That is what is included, and it is worth being precise about what it is: cover for damage you cause to other people, at the limits the law sets. It does not repair your rental bike and it does not pay your medical bills.

On top of that you can add bodywork insurance for 50,000₫ a day (about $2) at pickup. It applies to accidental damage to the rented bike’s bodywork, the scratched panel and the broken mirror that turn a small fall into a large bill. It does not cover rider injury, medical costs or theft, and like every policy in Vietnam it is void if you were riding drunk, racing, off-road or without a valid licence. There are dozens of rental shops in Hoi An and most are run by decent people. Wherever you rent, these ten questions tell you what is included before you pay, and they take two minutes at the counter:

1. How many helmets? Two, if you have a passenger, and do they have working straps?
2. Is there a raincoat under the seat? Open it and look.
3. How much fuel is in it? Many bikes go out nearly empty; know before you ride.
4. Is delivery free or priced? Ask for the fee to your hotel, both ways.
5. What is the deposit? Cash, a passport copy or a photo of it is normal. An original passport is not.
6. Is the registration card with the bike? Police will ask for it.
7. Is there a phone number that answers at night? Ring it once before you leave.
8. What happens with a breakdown, and with a puncture? They are often treated differently.
9. What does the insurance cover, in writing? If the answer is “everything”, it is not true.
10. Can you photograph the bike with them at pickup? A good shop will suggest it.
