Cam Thanh Basket Boat, Hoi An: An Honest Guide From Ex-Operators (2026)

Hoi An experiences · August 2026

For years, our little shop on Phan Chau Trinh didn’t just write about the Cam Thanh basket boats — we ran our own tour there, six-eighty a head, morning departures. We’ve since stepped back from operating it, which frees us to write the guide we always wanted to: what the coconut-forest basket boats are really like, what the price is actually made of, why some boats blast karaoke while others glide in silence — and how to make sure you end up in the right one.

The spinning trick every Hoi An basket boat trip ends with. The rower stands, works the paddle, and the thung chai turns on the spot.

№ 01What the basket boats actually are

The thúng chai — the round woven basket boat — is genuine central-Vietnam fishing equipment, developed (the local story goes) to dodge a colonial-era tax on boats: a basket, the fishermen argued, is not a boat. In the Bay Mau coconut forest at Cam Thanh, five kilometres from the Old Town, the baskets found a second life carrying visitors through flooded nipa-palm channels. Your rower spins, paddles and steers a vessel with no keel and no straight lines through green tunnels of water-coconut — a skill that looks effortless and very much isn’t.

It is touristy. It’s also genuinely fun, and the palm channels are genuinely beautiful. Whether your 45 minutes feels like a gimmick or a highlight comes down almost entirely to two choices covered below: which kind of boat, and what time of day.

Peak hour on the canal. This is what the standard ticket buys on a busy afternoon – the price is the same whether it looks like this or not.

№ 02What you’re paying for (an operator’s breakdown)

Every basket-boat price — walk-up or packaged — is built from the same stack, and having sold these tours ourselves, here’s the honest anatomy:

  • The forest entrance ticket — a small official fee for the Cam Thanh eco-area, the same for everyone.
  • The basket and rower — the core cost. A basket takes two guests; solo travellers share or pay for the boat.
  • The extras that vary wildly — hotel pickup, lunch, a fishing demo, coconut-leaf jewellery, a cooking class bolted on. This is where a US$8 ride and a US$40 “eco-tour” differ, and neither is wrong — they’re different products.
  • The tip economy — rowers earn modestly and tips are welcomed but not obligatory. A rower who performs (spinning the basket, singing, making you a palm-leaf ring) is politely angling for one; 20–50K is generous, and “no thank you” to the spinning is always allowed.
The one price rule that matters: know what your quote includes before you get in. The classic disappointment isn’t the cost — it’s discovering at the jetty that “ticket” meant entrance only, and the basket is extra. Booked online, the inclusions are in writing.

№ 03Party boats vs quiet boats — the real divide

The thing reviews argue about most isn’t price — it’s noise. Part of the waterway has evolved into a floating festival: loudspeaker karaoke, baskets spun like teacups, “Gangnam Style” echoing through the palms. Vietnamese and Korean group tours often want exactly this, and on its own terms it’s a riot. Western couples expecting a serene paddle frequently do not.

Both experiences exist side by side, and which one you get is decided when you book, not when you arrive:

  • Group tours with “music” or “entertainment” in the listing — that’s the party channel. Lean in or steer clear accordingly.
  • Listings that say “peaceful”, “eco”, small-group, or sunrise/late-afternoon departures — the quiet rows through the outer channels. This is what our own tour sold, and what most readers of this site want.
  • Walk-ups get whatever’s next in the queue — which at midday means the busy channel, guaranteed.

The same water outside the two peak windows: boats moored, no music, nobody in the frame.

№ 04Timing: the two golden windows

From years of morning departures: the forest before 9:30 is a different place — glassy water, birdsong, rowers fresh and chatty, the palm tunnels to yourselves. The day-trip wave from Da Nang rolls in from roughly 10:30 to 14:00, and that’s when the jetties queue and the karaoke peaks. After 15:30 the water calms again, and the low light through the palms is the best photography of the day. If you remember one sentence from an ex-operator: go early or go late, never at noon.

№ 05Booking: online vs at the waterfront

Walk-up at the Cam Thanh waterfront works — you’ll pay in cash and take the next boat. Booking online costs about the same and fixes the three walk-up problems: inclusions in writing, a named pickup time (which is how you hit the golden windows), and reviews that tell you whether you’re buying the party or the quiet. Since we no longer run our own departures, this is what we point guests to:

№ 06Getting there, and combining it well

Cam Thanh is a flat, pretty 15-minute ride from the Old Town through shrimp ponds and palms — one of the easiest self-ride trips in Hoi An, and the road itself is part of the charm. Pair the morning basket window with lunch back in town, or fold it into a bigger food day: the cooking classes guide covers the combos where the basket ride is the appetiser, and the food-by-motorbike guide makes a full day of the surrounding villages.

We ran these boats long enough to know the secret isn’t the basket — it’s the clock. The same channel that’s a karaoke festival at noon is a green cathedral at seven in the morning. Book the early slot; thank us later.— Anh Khoa, Hoi An local

№ 07What the basket boat price does not include

The ticket at the pier covers the entrance and the boat. Everything below is extra, and none of it is signposted. This is the part that turns a 100.000₫ basket boat trip into a 250.000₫ one without anybody lying to you.

ExtraTypicalIs it fair?
Rower’s tip20.000 – 50.000₫Yes. The rower keeps a small share of the basket boat ticket, so the tip is most of the day’s income. Pay it.

Carry the tip separately. Put 50.000₫ in a different pocket before you get in the basket boat. Fishing a 500.000₫ note out at the end and waiting for change is how a nice hour finishes awkwardly.

№ 08How to spot a quiet basket boat before you pay

The single biggest complaint about the Hoi An basket boat experience is noise, and it is entirely avoidable if you look at three things at the pier.

1. Look for speakers on the boats

Walk to the water before you buy. If the basket boat cluster in front of you has portable speakers strapped inside, that is the party section. Walk fifty metres along the bank and buy from a different operator.

2. Count the group sizes

Two people per basket boat is the quiet product. Boats loading four adults plus a cooler are the loud product. You can see this from the bank in ten seconds.

3. Ask which channel the boat takes

“Small channel or big water?” is a question every rower understands. The narrow palm channels are quiet and green. The open water is where the spinning shows and the speakers are.

Do not judge the whole thing by an afternoon in high season. The same basket boat canal at 07:30 in April and at 15:00 in July are different products. Most of the one-star reviews online are people who went at the worst possible hour and assumed that was it.

№ 09The complaints, and which ones are fair

“It is a tourist trap”

Partly fair. It is heavily commercialised and the spinning show is pure performance. But the nipa palm forest is real, the boats are real working thung chai, and 100.000₫ for an hour on the water is not a scam by any standard.

“They asked for more money on the boat”

Usually the tip, and that is legitimate. If someone demands a fixed extra fee mid-ride that was not mentioned at the pier, that is not.

“It was too crowded”

Fair, and fixable. Go outside 09:00–11:00 and 14:00–16:30.

“The war history is a sales pitch”

Not fair. The Cam Thanh palms genuinely were used as cover during the war, and older residents in the village lived it. It is thinly told on the boats, but it is not invented.

№ 10Kids, non-swimmers and what to bring

A few practical things we get asked at the shop every week before people ride out to the basket boat pier.

Is it safe for children?

Yes, with the usual caveats. The water in the channels is shallow and slow, the boats are stable when everyone sits still, and life jackets are available — ask for one rather than waiting to be offered. Toddlers should sit in a lap, not on the rim.

Can non-swimmers go?

Yes. A basket boat does not capsize easily and the rower is in it with you. If the spinning makes you nervous, say no before it starts — it is a performance, not part of the ride.

What to bring

Water, a hat, sunscreen and cash in small notes. There is no shade over most of the open water and no change at the pier. Leave anything you would hate to drop in a bag on the floor of the boat, not in your hand.

Phones and cameras

The spinning throws water. If you want to film it, a strap or a dry pouch is worth the five minutes it takes to sort out. We have watched more than one phone go into the canal at the exact moment the boat starts to turn.

What to wear

Something you do not mind getting damp. You sit low, close to the waterline, and there is usually a little water in the bottom of the boat.

№ 11FAQ

How long is the Cam Thanh basket boat ride?

Most rides run 45–60 minutes on the water, plus time at the jetty. Baskets carry two guests plus the rower; combos with lunch, fishing demos or a cooking class stretch the visit to a half day.

Is the basket boat ride worth it, or too touristy?

It’s touristy and worth it — if you control two variables. Go in the early-morning or late-afternoon window, and book a quiet/eco listing rather than a music-boat group. At noon on the karaoke channel, most independent travellers wish they hadn’t.

Do I have to tip the basket boat rower?

No — tips are appreciated, not obligatory. Rowers who spin the basket, sing or weave you palm-leaf gifts are politely inviting one; 20,000–50,000₫ is generous, and declining the theatrics is completely acceptable.

How do I avoid the loud karaoke boats?

Book, don’t walk up. Listings describing a peaceful, eco or small-group ride use the quieter outer channels; group tours advertising music and entertainment use the party stretch. Walk-up visitors at midday are routed to whatever is next — which is the busy channel.

How do I get to the coconut forest from Hoi An?

Cam Thanh is about 5 km east of the Old Town — a flat 15-minute motorbike or bicycle ride through the palms, or a short taxi. Many booked tickets include hotel pickup; check the listing.

Can I combine the basket boat with a cooking class?

Yes — the most popular Cam Thanh format is exactly that: market visit, basket ride, then cooking the classics you shopped for. It packs the area’s best experiences into one half-day booking.
