Hoi An to Hanoi is 797 km — most of the length of Vietnam. Every overland option takes the better part of a day, and there is a ninety-minute flight from Da Nang that frequently costs less than the best bus ticket.

So the honest advice on Hoi An to Hanoi is this: fly, unless the overland journey is something you actively want. Plenty of people do want it, and there are good reasons — the bus saves a hotel night, the train is one of the great rail journeys in Asia, and breaking the trip at Ninh Binh turns a slog into an itinerary. This guide covers all of them without pretending the bus is the sensible default.

Several operators run Hoi An to Hanoi, mostly leaving in the afternoon and evening so that the long middle of the journey happens while you sleep. These are the fares and departure patterns you can expect to see when you search — they move with the season, so treat them as a guide rather than a timetable.

№ 04The train, and which service to pick

Hoi An has no station, so this starts with 30 km to Da Nang station. From there it is 780 km and sixteen to nineteen hours to Hanoi, arriving at the main station on Le Duan street in the city centre — which is a real advantage over the bus stations on the ring road.

Services run as SE2, SE4, SE6, SE8, SE10, SE12 and SE20, spread from mid-morning to late evening. Fares run from about US$17–22 for an air-conditioned soft seat, US$20–50 for a berth, and US$65–135 for the private tourist cabins that a few operators attach to the standard trains.

№ 05Flying, and why it usually wins

Da Nang to Hanoi is one of the busiest air routes in Vietnam, which is exactly why it is cheap. Fares start around 700.000₫ booked ahead — regularly less than a cabin berth on the bus — and the flight is about an hour and twenty minutes.

Count on roughly five hours door to door once you add the run to Da Nang airport, check-in and the trip into Hanoi from Noi Bai, which is 30 km out. Against sixteen to nineteen hours overland, that is most of a day of your holiday bought back for the price of a bus ticket.

The case against flying is genuine but narrow: you lose a night of accommodation that the sleeper would have covered, you see nothing, and if you are travelling with a lot of luggage the budget carriers will charge for it. For most people, none of those outweigh fourteen hours.

№ 06Breaking the journey at Ninh Binh

If you are going overland and have one spare day, this is the version to take. Ninh Binh sits about 95 km south of Hanoi and is a natural stop — limestone karst standing in rice fields, boat trips through flooded caves, and a railway station in the middle of town so the train delivers you to the door.

The shape is: train or bus from Da Nang to Ninh Binh, one or two nights, then two hours up to Hanoi by road or rail. № 07Riding it: the north-south road trip

Riding Hoi An to Hanoi is not a transfer, it is the trip in itself — seven to fourteen days depending on how much you stop, and one of the great motorcycle journeys anywhere. The usual shape goes north over the Hai Van Pass to Hue, inland to Phong Nha for the caves, then either up the coast or onto the Ho Chi Minh Road through the western hills.

№ 08Surviving a 19-hour sleeper

If you are taking the bus, a few things make the difference between a rough night and a fine one.

• Take a lower berth, mid-coach. The rear is over the axle and the upper deck sways; the very front gets the headlights and every horn.
• Pay for the cabin if you are tall. Vietnamese sleeper berths are sized for Vietnamese passengers, and 19 hours is a long time to be folded.
• The aircon runs cold all night. Bring a layer; the thin blanket provided is not enough.
• Eat before you board. Rest stops are roadside canteens at unhelpful hours.
• Keep valuables on your body, not in the overhead net and never in the hold.

№ 09Arriving in Hanoi

Where a Hoi An to Hanoi service puts you down matters more than people expect. The train arrives on Le Duan street, walking distance from the centre. Buses generally arrive at Nuoc Ngam or Giap Bat bus stations, both several kilometres south of the Old Quarter, so budget for a Grab at the end — and note that a 06:00 arrival means standing outside a bus station at dawn with your hotel check-in eight hours away.

Noi Bai airport is 30 km north with a fast expressway and a good bus link. Whichever way you come, Hanoi is the jumping-off point for Ha Long Bay and Sapa; there are Ha Long Bay day cruises from Hanoi whose better boats sell out in high season.
