№ 01Why Ninh Binh is worth 700 km

Ninh Binh is what people mean when they say “Halong Bay on land”: the same drowned limestone towers, but standing in rice fields and flooded valleys instead of the sea, with rowing boats going through caves at water level rather than cruise ships anchored offshore. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is ninety minutes from Hanoi, and it is the single most photographed landscape in northern Vietnam.

From Hoi An it is a long way — 704 km, most of the length of the country’s central coast — and that is the honest headline. This is not a side trip. It is either the northern leg of a Vietnam-wide itinerary, or a deliberate three-to-four-day journey of its own.

The good news is that it is one of the easiest long journeys in Vietnam to organise, because unlike Quy Nhon, Phong Nha or anywhere in the highlands, the train stops in the middle of town.

№ 02Every way from Hoi An to Ninh Binh, priced

The short version: take the night train. At this distance it is the only option that turns the journey into a night’s sleep instead of a lost day, and it puts you down in the centre of Ninh Binh rather than at a bus stop on the highway.

№ 03The train, and why it wins here

On most routes south of Hoi An the train has a catch — the station is miles from the town. Ninh Binh has no such problem: the station is in the city, a short taxi ride from the hotels and about 7 km from Tam Coc. That single fact is why the train beats the bus here, even though the two take a similar time.

The journey begins with 30 km from Hoi An to Da Nang station, then about fourteen hours north on the Reunification line. There are overnight services, which is how almost everyone does it. Fares run roughly from 600.000₫ for an air-conditioned soft seat to around a million for a four-berth soft sleeper, with six-berth cabins in between. № 04The sleeper bus, and flying via Hanoi

Sleeper buses run from Da Nang, take thirteen to fourteen hours, and cost from about 300.000₫ up to 650.000₫ for the better cabin coaches. Departures spread from mid-afternoon to about 20:00 and arrive between roughly 05:00 and 09:30. It is the cheapest way to cover 700 km, and on a good coach it is fine — but check the arrival time, because several get in before dawn.

Flying means Da Nang to Hanoi, about an hour and a half door to gate, then 95 km south to Ninh Binh by limousine van or bus — two to three hours, and cheap. There is no airport at Ninh Binh and there will not be one. Flying is genuinely the fastest option and makes sense if your time is worth more than the fare, but it costs you a hotel night at both ends that the sleeper train includes.

№ 05Every 2026 entrance fee, in one table

Ninh Binh charges for everything separately, the prices moved recently, and most blogs still quote figures from several years ago. Here is what the main sites cost in 2026.

Rowers are not tipped by obligation, but 50.000 to 100.000₫ is normal and well earned — many of them row with their feet for two hours.

№ 06Trang An or Tam Coc? They are not the same

Almost everyone arrives assuming these are two names for one place. They are two different valleys with different boats, and if you only have one day the choice matters.

Trang An is the bigger, wetter, more dramatic one — a network of flooded caves you are rowed through, some of them long and low enough to duck for, with temples on islands between them. It has three route options of different lengths, the ticket includes the boat, and it is where the Kong: Skull Island set was built. Go here if you want the spectacle.

Tam Coc is prettier and gentler: a river between rice fields and karst, three caves, and no temples to speak of. It is much better than Trang An in late May and early June, when the valley floor turns gold at harvest and the photographs everyone has seen get taken. Go here if you want the landscape rather than the caves.

№ 07Hang Mua, Hoa Lu and the rest

Hang Mua is the viewpoint: 486 stone steps up a limestone spur to a dragon statue and the view down over the whole Tam Coc valley. It is the picture that sells Ninh Binh, it costs 100.000₫, and it opens at 06:00 — which is when to do it, both for the light and because those steps in the afternoon heat are unpleasant.

Hoa Lu was the capital of Vietnam in the tenth century, before Hanoi, and the surviving temples to the Dinh and Le kings cost 20.000₫ — the best-value ticket in the province and a genuinely important place. Bai Dinh is the opposite: an enormous modern pagoda complex, free to enter but so large that the 100.000₫ tram is close to compulsory.

Beyond those, Van Long is a quiet wetland reserve with langurs on the cliffs, Phat Diem is an extraordinary stone-and-timber cathedral built in Vietnamese temple style and costs nothing, and Cuc Phuong is Vietnam’s first national park with a primate rescue centre.

№ 08Getting around once you are there

Ninh Binh is flat, the sites are 5 to 15 km apart, and the classic way to see it is by bicycle or scooter from your guesthouse — most rent them, and the lanes between the karst are the best part of the day. This is exactly the sort of riding we set people up for in Hoi An, and it works even better here because there is almost no traffic once you leave the main road.

What does not work is riding there from Hoi An. 704 km is four to five days each way, and no rental shop in Hoi An — ours included — will let a bike be left 700 km north. If you want to ride this landscape, take the train and rent when you arrive.

№ 09The province just tripled in size

On 1 July 2025 Vietnam reduced its provinces from 63 to 34, and Ha Nam and Nam Dinh were both merged into Ninh Binh. The combined province keeps the name Ninh Binh, with its centre in Ninh Binh city, and is now roughly three times its former size.

For a visitor there is one genuinely useful consequence: Tam Chuc, the vast pagoda complex that used to be in Ha Nam, is now in the same province as Bai Dinh — the two largest Buddhist complexes in Vietnam, about 30 km apart, on one ticket-free afternoon if you have transport. Nam Dinh brings the cathedral country around Bui Chu and the coast at Hai Hau.

Everything else is administrative. Maps and signs still say Ha Nam and Nam Dinh, and the towns have not moved; it matters only when an address or a booking says “Ninh Binh province” and you need to know which corner of a much larger area is meant.

The road distance was measured from Hoi An Old Town to Ninh Binh city; times assume normal traffic and no long stops. Train, bus and flight fares follow operator listings current at the time of writing and move with the season and class. Entrance fees and opening hours are 2026 figures published for the Ninh Binh sites and are quoted per person unless stated; confirm at the gate and carry cash. The Ha Nam and Nam Dinh mergers follow the 2025 provincial reorganisation effective 1 July 2025.
