Saint Andrew of Phu Yen – Vietnam’s First Catholic Martyr

Introduction

Saint Andrew of Phu Yen (1625–1644) is remembered as the first Catholic martyr of Vietnam. At just 19 years old, he sacrificed his life for his faith, leaving behind a powerful example of courage and devotion. Today, he is honored as the Patron of Catechists and continues to inspire young Catholics across the country and beyond.

Early Life

Andrew was born around 1625 in Phu Yen, a poor but devout fishing village in central Vietnam. In 1641, he was baptized by the Jesuit missionary Father Alexandre de Rhodes, marking the beginning of his journey of faith. Soon after, he joined the Catechist Association, a group dedicated to spreading the Gospel and supporting missionary work in Vietnam.

Dedication and Vows

In 1643, at Hoi An, Andrew made a solemn vow to dedicate his life entirely to the Church. Despite his young age, he traveled widely with missionaries across provinces such as Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, and Binh Dinh, helping teach the catechism and bringing the faith to local communities.

Martyrdom

In 1644, during a period of persecution under Lord Nguyen Phuc Lan, Andrew was arrested. Despite being offered freedom if he denied his faith, he firmly declared: “I am a Christian, and I want to remain faithful until the end.”

On July 26, 1644, at the age of 19, Andrew was executed in Hoi An. Before his death, he encouraged fellow Christians with the words: “Remain firm in your faith. Please do not be sad about my death. Please pray for me to remain faithful until the end.” His final cry was the name of Jesus.

Every year on July 26, the Catholic Church in Vietnam celebrates his feast day, which has also been chosen as the National Day of Catechists. His legacy lives on as an inspiration for faith, courage, and commitment.

Conclusion

The story of Saint Andrew of Phu Yen is not only about martyrdom, but also about unwavering faith and youthful courage. He continues to inspire Catholics worldwide to live with love, conviction, and dedication.
