Hoi An to Da Lat is 612 km, and there is no train — the line was abandoned decades ago. Here is what the sleeper bus and the flight really cost, and why breaking the journey beats both.

№ 01Why Da Lat, and the honest distance

Da Lat is the one place in southern Vietnam where you need a jacket. It sits at 1,500 m in the pine hills, the French built it as a hill station to escape the coastal heat, and it has been living off that ever since — flower farms, waterfalls, coffee, lakes, and a climate that stays between about 15 and 24°C all year while the coast bakes.

From Hoi An it is 612 km, which is the honest headline and the reason this page exists. That is further than Nha Trang, further than Ninh Binh, further than anywhere else we write about except Saigon. It is not a side trip; it is a leg of a longer journey, and the smart versions of it do not involve sitting on one bus the whole way.

You have… Do this Cost per person
Three days Fly to Lien Khuong, two nights in the hills, fly back ~1,8–2,5 million₫ in flights
Four days Night bus down, two nights, fly back from Lien Khuong ~500.000₫ + one flight
Five days Break the trip: a night in Nha Trang, then up the pass to Da Lat ~600.000₫ travel
A week and a licence Ride it over three to four days via the coast and the highlands Rental + ~1 million₫ fuel

Option Door to door Fare per person Verdict
Sleeper bus, direct 12–15 h, usually overnight ~400.000–700.000₫ The standard way; the last hours climb into the hills at dawn
Flight DAD to Lien Khuong ~1 h 15 in the air, 4–5 h in reality from ~900.000₫ booked ahead Worth it here — the bus is long and the airport is 30 km out
Bus via Nha Trang 9–11 h, then 4 h ~600.000₫ total, two tickets Better than one long haul if you want a beach night
Bus via Mui Ne 14–16 h, then 4 h ~700.000₫ total Same province now — beach and mountain in one trip
Motorbike 3–4 days Rental + fuel A superb highland ride — plan it as a trip, not a transfer
Train Not possible There is no railway to Da Lat. See section 03

The short version: fly if your time is worth anything, take the night bus if it is not, and break the journey if you have a spare day. Of the three, breaking the journey is the one most people are glad they did.

№ 03Why there is no train to Da Lat

This question comes up constantly, usually because people have seen photographs of Da Lat’s beautiful art-deco railway station and assumed it is in use. It is not, in the way you need it to be.

The French line that once climbed from Thap Cham up to Da Lat was abandoned decades ago. What survives is a short heritage stretch of about seven kilometres from Da Lat station out to Trai Mat — a lovely half-hour excursion, and completely useless as transport. The national railway’s nearest useful stops are Thap Cham near Phan Rang and Nha Trang, and from either of those you finish the journey by road.

Ignore any site selling you a “Hoi An to Da Lat train”. What is actually being sold is a train to Nha Trang or Thap Cham plus a bus, priced as one ticket. That combination is a perfectly good way to travel — it is section 06 of this guide — but you should know what you are buying and what each leg costs.

№ 04The sleeper bus in detail

Direct sleepers run from Hoi An and Da Nang, take twelve to fifteen hours, and cost roughly 400.000₫ to 700.000₫ depending on whether you are in an open berth or a cabin. Almost all of them run overnight, leaving in the afternoon or early evening and arriving in Da Lat in the morning.

The route runs south down the coast, turns inland somewhere around Phan Rang or Nha Trang depending on the operator, and climbs. That last part is the good part: the road up to the plateau winds through pine forest and, if the timing works, you come over the top at dawn with the mist still in the valleys.

Bring a layer and keep it with you, not in the hold. You board in coastal heat and step off at 1,500 m in the early morning, which is a fifteen-degree difference. Every winter someone arrives in Da Lat in shorts and a singlet at six in the morning and spends the first hour looking for somewhere open that sells jumpers.

№ 05Flying into Lien Khuong

Da Lat has an airport — Lien Khuong — and Da Nang to Lien Khuong takes about an hour and a quarter in the air, with fares from around 900.000₫ if you book ahead. On a 612 km route where the alternative is fifteen hours in a bunk, that is unusually good value, and this is one of the few routes in this cluster where we say plainly: fly.

The catch is the same as everywhere: Lien Khuong is about 30 km from the city, down on the plain, so add a shuttle or taxi at the far end and count on four to five hours door to door rather than the ninety minutes the flight time suggests. That is still a third of the bus.

Da Lat sits at 1,500 m. The jacket you did not pack is the thing you will remember.

№ 06Breaking the trip: Nha Trang or Mui Ne

This is the recommendation most guides skip because it does not sell a single ticket. Hoi An to Da Lat splits naturally into two comfortable legs, and doing it that way costs about the same as the direct sleeper.

Via Nha Trang is the classic: nine to eleven hours overnight to the beach, a day there, then a four-hour bus up over the pass to Da Lat — a genuinely spectacular road. Our Hoi An to Nha Trang night bus guide covers the first leg.

Via Mui Ne is the newer option and it has become more logical since the 2025 provincial merger, because Mui Ne and Da Lat are now in the same province, 189 km apart. Sand dunes, then pine forest, in two days. Our Hoi An to Mui Ne guide covers that half.

Two tickets are not more expensive. Two legs of roughly 300.000₫ each land in the same place as one direct sleeper at 400.000–700.000₫, and you get a beach day out of it instead of a night of half-sleep. The only thing it costs you is a calendar day.

№ 07Riding it, as a trip rather than a transfer

At 612 km this is a three to four day ride each way, so it only makes sense as a journey in its own right — most people who ride to Da Lat carry on to Saigon or the Mekong rather than turning round.

The good version goes down the coast to Nha Trang or Phan Rang, then climbs inland on one of the passes to the plateau; the alternative runs inland earlier through the highlands via Buon Ma Thuot, which our Buon Ma Thuot guide covers. Either way it is one of the best long rides in the country.

We do not drop bikes in Da Lat. One-way rentals from Hoi An work as far as Hue and Da Nang. At 612 km nobody will retrieve a bike from the Central Highlands at a price you would accept, so plan a loop that comes back, or take the bus or the flight and rent locally once you are there.

№ 08Da Lat now runs a much bigger province

On 1 July 2025 Vietnam cut its provinces from 63 to 34, and Binh Thuan and Dak Nong were both merged into Lam Dong. The combined province kept the name Lam Dong, and its administrative centre is Da Lat.

So this hill station now administers a province that runs from the pine plateau down to the beaches at Mui Ne and Phan Thiet and west toward the Cambodian border. For a traveller the practical effect is small but real: an address or a booking saying “Lam Dong” might mean the mountains at 1,500 m or the coast at sea level, about 189 km and a very different climate apart.

It also makes the beach-and-mountain itinerary an intra-province trip, which is exactly how the region is now being marketed, and why the Mui Ne routing in section 06 keeps getting easier.

№ 09When to go, and what to do there

Da Lat has no hot season worth the name — it sits between roughly 15 and 24°C all year — so the question is rain, not heat. December to March is the dry window and the pick, with clear mornings and cold nights. From May to October the afternoons bring heavy rain, which is when the waterfalls are at their best and the roads at their worst.

What people actually do here: the waterfalls (Datanla, Elephant, Pongour), the flower and strawberry farms, the lakes, the coffee — this is Vietnamese arabica country, unlike the robusta plateau further north — and the Crazy House, which is either the best or worst building in Vietnam depending on your taste. There are day tours covering the waterfalls and viewpoints with pickup included if you would rather not organise transport on arrival.

№ 10FAQ

How far is Hoi An to Da Lat?

About 612 km by road. A direct sleeper bus takes twelve to fifteen hours, usually overnight; flying from Da Nang to Lien Khuong takes about an hour and a quarter in the air, or four to five hours door to door once you add the airport transfers.

Is there a train from Hoi An to Da Lat?

No. The French line to Da Lat was abandoned decades ago and only a seven-kilometre heritage stretch to Trai Mat still runs. The nearest useful stations are Thap Cham and Nha Trang, and you finish the journey by road from either.

How much is the bus from Hoi An to Da Lat?

Roughly 400.000 to 700.000₫ depending on whether you take an open berth or a cabin. Services take twelve to fifteen hours and almost all run overnight, leaving in the afternoon or evening and arriving in the morning.

Is it better to fly or take the bus to Da Lat?

Fly, if you can book ahead. Da Nang to Lien Khuong starts around 900.000₫ and takes four to five hours door to door against twelve to fifteen on the bus — an unusually good trade on this route. The bus wins only on price.

Should I break the journey to Da Lat?

If you have a spare day, yes. Two legs of about 300.000₫ each via Nha Trang or Mui Ne cost roughly the same as one direct sleeper, and you get a beach day instead of a night of half-sleep. The mountain road up from either is spectacular.

How cold does Da Lat get?

It sits between about 15 and 24°C all year, so nights are genuinely cold by Vietnamese standards. Bring a jacket and keep it in your hand luggage — you board in coastal heat and step off at 1,500 m in the early morning.

Is Da Lat in Lam Dong province?

Yes, and Lam Dong is now much bigger. Since 1 July 2025 Binh Thuan and Dak Nong have been merged into it, with Da Lat as the administrative centre, so the province runs from the plateau down to the beaches at Mui Ne and Phan Thiet.

The road distance was measured from Hoi An Old Town to central Da Lat; times assume normal traffic and no long stops. Bus and flight fares follow operator listings current at the time of writing and move sharply with the season and how far ahead you book. The Da Lat railway position reflects the abandoned Thap Cham line and the surviving Trai Mat heritage section. The Binh Thuan and Dak Nong mergers into Lam Dong follow the 2025 provincial reorganisation effective 1 July 2025.
