Halfway along the beach road between Hoi An and Da Nang, five marble outcrops rise straight out of the flatland — pagodas on their summits, caves in their bellies, and a stonemason village at their feet. The Marble Mountains are the easiest big sight on this coast to do by motorbike, and this guide covers the part most articles get wrong: the three separate tickets, the elevator shortcut, and when the crowds actually come.

№ 01What the Marble Mountains actually are

Ngu Hanh Son — the Five Element Mountains — are five limestone-and-marble hills named for metal, wood, water, fire and earth. Only the largest, Thuy Son (Water Mountain), is open to climb, and it packs a lot into one hill: the 17th-century Tam Thai pagoda, the seven-storey Xa Loi tower, and a warren of caves that Vietnamese Buddhists have used as shrines for centuries.

The showpiece is Huyen Khong Cave — a cathedral-sized chamber where sunbeams drop through ceiling openings onto a seated Buddha. It photographed its way onto every Vietnam itinerary for good reason, and mid-morning on a sunny day is when the light show actually happens.

At the base, Non Nuoc village has carved marble for generations — worth a stroll, but note the giant statues no longer come from these hills: quarrying was banned to save the mountains themselves, and the marble now arrives from elsewhere.

№ 02The three tickets, untangled

The single most common confusion at the gate: there is no combo ticket. Three things are sold separately, all cash only:

• Children under 6 enter free; kids over 6 pay the adult 40K
• Two ticket offices sit at the base by the two staircases — queues at both build 9:00–15:00
• Bring cash. The ticket windows don’t take cards, and the nearest ATM detour will cost you the cool morning air

№ 03Riding there from Hoi An

This is among the easiest rides in the region: follow the coast road (Truong Sa → Vo Nguyen Giap) north for about 20 km and the marble peaks appear on your left — you cannot miss a mountain standing alone on a plain. Allow 35–40 minutes at a relaxed pace.

Parking lots ring the base (a few thousand dong, guarded). The beach across the road is the southern end of the same sand as My Khe — which is exactly why we tell riders to make this a two-stop morning: mountain first while it’s cool, beach after.

№ 04The route through the mountain that works

1. Start at Am Phu Cave, ground level. The Buddhist hell-and-redemption cave is coolest and emptiest first thing — and doing it before the climb means you’re not descending into “hell” on tired legs.
2. Take the elevator up (15K). Save the knees for the caves; the stairs make a better descent than ascent.
3. Loop the summit anticlockwise: Xa Loi tower → viewpoints over the coast → Tam Thai pagoda → Huyen Khong Cave last, timed for the late-morning sunbeams.
4. Walk down the 156 steps past Linh Ung pagoda, coming out at the second gate near the parking.

№ 05Timing: heat, queues and light

Three clocks matter here. The heat clock: the mountain is exposed marble and climbs hard after 10:00. The queue clock: tour groups from Da Nang fill 9:00–15:00. The light clock: Huyen Khong’s sunbeams need high sun, roughly 10:00–13:00 on clear days.

The play that satisfies all three: arrive 7:30–8:00, do Am Phu and the summit loop early, and be standing in Huyen Khong around 10:30 as the beams switch on — then you’re descending as the big groups puff upward.

№ 06Ride or tour?

Ride yourself. Of all the day trips we cover, this is the one where the bike wins hardest: 40 minutes of easy coast road, total cost around 200K including every ticket, and the freedom to be there at opening — which section 05 just showed you is the whole game.

A tour earns its keep only if you’re not riding at all, or you want the caves’ Buddhist iconography explained properly — the statues and inscriptions say a lot more with a guide narrating them.

How much does it cost to visit the Marble Mountains in 2026?

The Thuy Son entrance ticket is 40.000₫. The elevator is a separate 15.000₫ one-way (30.000₫ return), and Am Phu Cave is another 20.000₫ with its own entrance at ground level. All ticket windows are cash only.

How far are the Marble Mountains from Hoi An?

About 20 km — a 35–40 minute motorbike ride straight up the coast road toward Da Nang. The mountains stand alone on the plain, so navigation is effectively impossible to get wrong.

Is there an elevator at the Marble Mountains?

Yes — a glass elevator runs up the cliff face for 15.000₫ one-way. A good pattern is riding it up and walking the 156 steps down past Linh Ung pagoda.
