№ 01Route 1: the coast road, turn by turn
This is the route to take. It is barely longer than the inland option, has far less truck traffic, and spends most of its length with the sea on your right.
- Leave Hoi An heading north on Lac Long QuanPick it up near An Bang Beach. From the Ancient Town, ride north-east first — do not try to cut through the pedestrian streets.
- Follow Lac Long Quan up the coastOpen road, casuarina trees, beach access lanes on your right. You pass Ha My Beach along here — one of the quietest stretches of sand in the region, and worth ten minutes on the way back.
- Lac Long Quan becomes Truong SaThe road changes name at the old provincial boundary but never changes character. Resorts on the seaward side, open sky, very few junctions.
- Truong Sa becomes Vo Nguyen GiapYou are now on the Da Nang beachfront road. High-rises begin appearing on your left. My Khe runs along this road.
- Stop where the beach access points beginMy Khe is not a single spot — it is several kilometres of continuous sand. See the parking section below for where to actually pull in.
Total: roughly 30 km, 45 to 50 minutes at a relaxed pace. There is no hill, no tunnel and no motorway on this route.
The road runs almost dead straight for 25 km, so you barely need a map — but do drop a pin on where you parked before you walk onto the sand. My Khe’s beachfront looks identical for kilometres in both directions, and finding a specific bike among hundreds at 6pm is genuinely difficult.
№ 02Route 2: inland, via the Marble Mountains
The inland road — Le Van Hien and the DT607 — is a few minutes quicker in theory and considerably less pleasant in practice: more trucks, more dust, no sea. There is exactly one reason to take it, and it is a good one.
The Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son) sit directly on this route, roughly 20 km from Hoi An. Five limestone outcrops riddled with caves and pagodas, and you can be at the beach twenty minutes after leaving. Combining the two makes a genuinely full day.

Ride inland on the way up, stop at the Marble Mountains while you are still fresh, carry on to My Khe for the afternoon — then take the coast road home with the sunset behind you. Same distance, twice the trip.
№ 03Where to park at My Khe Beach
This is where most first-timers waste twenty minutes. My Khe stretches for several kilometres along Vo Nguyen Giap, and the beach access points are not all equal.
- Use a guarded lot, not the roadside. Attended parking areas sit behind most beach entrances and cost only a few thousand đồng. Roadside parking on the beachfront gets cleared by traffic police in the busy season.
- Take the ticket and keep it. Standard system nationwide — no ticket, awkward conversation on collection.
- Nothing in the under-seat storage. Leave nothing visible on the bike at all.
- Note the access number or restaurant name. The entrances look identical from the sand.
- Point the bike outwards if you can. Leaving at sunset, when everyone else is also leaving, becomes much easier.

№ 04Swimming at My Khe: hours, seasons, rip currents
My Khe is a genuinely beautiful beach and a genuinely open one — it faces the East Sea with nothing in front of it. That is worth taking seriously, and almost no route guide mentions it.
Swim between the flags, and know what a rip current looks like
Swimming at My Khe is generally permitted from around 05:00 to 20:00, with lifeguards on duty through the day and marked swimming zones. Stay inside them. The flags are not decorative — they mark where the lifeguards can actually reach you.
A rip current is a channel of water flowing back out to sea, and it is what catches strong swimmers off guard. Three things to look for before you go in:
Water noticeably darker than the water either side of it. A patch that looks deceptively calm while waves break on both sides. Foam, seaweed or debris streaming steadily out to sea. Any of those, walk fifty metres along the sand and enter somewhere else.
Do not swim against it — you will not win, and exhaustion is what drowns people. Swim parallel to the beach until you are out of the pull, then come in at an angle. Raise an arm and shout if you need the lifeguard. Rips are narrow; a rip current is a conveyor belt, not a whirlpool, and it does not pull you under.
Season matters as much as the hour. April to September is the swimming season, with May to August giving the calmest, clearest water. From roughly November to February the sea turns unsettled, the rain sets in and the water is often too rough to be enjoyable — the beach is still worth riding to for a coffee and a walk, but do not plan the day around swimming.
Jellyfish appear in the warmer months. They are a nuisance rather than a danger here, but if you are stung, rinse with seawater rather than fresh water and ask at a beach kiosk.
№ 05The best time to make this ride
- Leave Hoi An at 05:30 for sunriseMy Khe faces east, so the sun comes up straight out of the sea in front of you. The road is empty, the air is cool, and the beach at 06:30 belongs to local swimmers doing laps before work. This is the best version of the day.
- Or leave at 15:00 for a late afternoonSwim, eat, then ride the coast road home with the light going gold behind the dunes. Second best, and much easier if you are not a morning person.
- Avoid arriving between 11:00 and 14:00Full sun, no shade on the sand, and the hottest possible hours to be riding 30 km in the open. In summer the road surface radiates heat all afternoon.
Central Vietnam gets serious rain in these months and the coast road offers no shelter for long stretches. Sudden downpours reduce visibility fast and the road surface becomes slick. Check the forecast before setting off, carry a poncho, and if it is already raining hard when you wake up — save the trip for another day. The beach will not be swimmable anyway.

№ 07Riding back to Hoi An after dark
Plenty of people stay for sunset and then discover the ride home is a different road at night. It is entirely doable — we do it constantly — but three things change.
- The coast road is poorly lit in long stretches. Between the Da Nang resorts and An Bang there are kilometres with almost no street lighting. Ride slower than feels necessary.
- Check your headlight before you leave the beach, not when you are already in the dark. Ten seconds now, a much better hour later.
- Sand and dust blow across the surface near the dunes, and it is invisible at night. Corners are where it collects — take them wide and gentle.
- Do not drink and ride. Vietnam enforces a zero-tolerance blood alcohol limit and checkpoints on this road are routine in the evening. A beer at a beachfront restaurant is not worth the risk — use Grab and collect the bike tomorrow.
№ 08Eating at the beach without overpaying

The beachfront along Vo Nguyen Giap is lined with seafood restaurants, and prices vary enormously for near-identical food. A few habits keep the bill sane.
- Seafood is usually sold by weight. Ask for the price per kilo and watch it weighed. This is normal practice and nobody will be offended.
- Confirm the price of everything that arrives unasked — the peanuts, the wet towel, the rice crackers. They are charged.
- The cheapest good food is one street back. Walk inland a block from the beachfront and prices drop noticeably for the same fish.
- Try mi quang and banh xeo, not just grilled seafood. They are the local specialities and cost a fraction of a seafood platter.
- Late afternoon is the best value. Kitchens are quiet between lunch and dinner and far more willing to negotiate a set price.
