Riding from Hoi An to Phong Nha is one of the best motorbike trips in Vietnam and one of the most commonly underestimated. Google Maps will tell you it is around 336 km. That number is for a car on the expressway — a road motorbikes are not allowed on. The distance you will actually ride is 364 km, and it takes closer to eight hours of moving time, before you stop for fuel, food or photographs.

№ 01The honest answer on distance and time

Open Google Maps, type in the route, and it offers you 336 km in about six hours. That figure assumes the CT01 expressway, which is not part of any legal Hoi An to Phong Nha route for a bike. Motorbikes are not permitted on Vietnamese expressways, so it is not a route you can legally or safely take.

Turn on “avoid highways” and the real picture appears: 364 km via the Ho Chi Minh Road at around 7 hours 39 minutes of moving time, or 359 km via QL49B at 7 hours 49. That is the ride from Hoi An to Phong Nha as a motorbike actually experiences it. Re-measured on 25 August 2026, Maps was offering 341 km on the expressway route and 337–354 km once highways were excluded, depending on which branch of the Ho Chi Minh Road it picked that morning — so treat 364 km as the honest upper bound rather than a fixed figure.

Now add reality. Fuel stops, a proper lunch, the Hai Van Pass photo you will absolutely stop for, one wrong turn, and the fact that nobody rides eight hours at a constant speed. Door to door, plan on 10 to 11 hours for Hoi An to Phong Nha. Leaving Hoi An at 7am puts you in Phong Nha somewhere around 5 or 6pm — in the dark for the last stretch during winter months.

№ 02Phong Nha changed province in 2025

On 1 July 2025, under Resolution 1680/NQ-UBTVQH15, the province of Quang Binh was merged into Quang Tri. District-level administration was abolished across the country at the same time. Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park now sits in Quang Tri province, whose administrative centre is Dong Hoi.

For a rider this is mostly paperwork, but it matters in three practical places:

• Insurance and rental agreements. If a policy or contract lists the provinces you are covered in, check it says Quang Tri and not only Quang Binh.
• Addresses you are given. Hotels in Phong Nha still print the old address on booking confirmations. It is not a scam and the place has not moved — the province name simply changed.
• Older guides. Almost every English-language article about riding from Hoi An to Phong Nha was written before this change. If a guide has not been updated for the merger, assume its other details are equally old.

№ 03The three routes from Hoi An to Phong Nha

There is no single road from Hoi An to Phong Nha. Three realistic options exist, and they suit different riders.

The Ho Chi Minh Road is the one people remember. It runs inland through forest and low mountains with almost no heavy traffic — but services thin out badly, and if something breaks you may wait a long time for help. Take it only with a bike you trust and a full tank — this is the loneliest part of the Hoi An to Phong Nha corridor.

QL1A is the workhorse. Petrol stations, tyre repair shops and food every few kilometres, which matters on a ride this long. The price is sharing the road with long-distance trucks and buses all day. Most riders doing Hoi An to Phong Nha for the first time take QL1A north and the Ho Chi Minh Road south, so they see both.

QL49B hugs the coast past the Tam Giang lagoon before rejoining the main road. It is the prettiest of the three for the first hundred kilometres and the least suitable if you are already tired.

№ 04Where to break the Hoi An to Phong Nha ride

Splitting Hoi An to Phong Nha across two days is the difference between a good trip and an endurance test. Two sensible stopping points, depending on how much you want to see on the way.

Hue is the obvious stop. Day one is short enough to ride the Hai Van Pass slowly and still arrive for a late lunch, which leaves an afternoon and evening in a genuinely interesting city. Day two is 224 kilometres — a comfortable morning that has you in Phong Nha with daylight left to book a cave tour for the next day.

We run a one-way rental from Hoi An to Hue, so if the long leg north is the part you want and Hue is far enough, you can drop the bike there rather than doubling back. Be straight with yourself about the rest: from Hue you still have 224 km to Phong Nha, and the same distance back.

№ 05What the Hoi An to Phong Nha trip costs

Figures below cover Hoi An to Phong Nha for one rider on a 125cc automatic, riding up and back over three or four days. They are indicative — fuel and room rates move.

On fuel: since Vietnam switched to E10 RON 95 in June 2026, a litre runs a little over 22,000₫, so a 364 km leg costs roughly 180,000₫ in petrol. Budget the same again for coming back and you are close.

№ 06The Hai Van problem, and other traps

• Hoi An to Phong Nha means the Hai Van Pass, not the tunnel. The tunnel is for cars and buses. You take the pass — 21 km of switchbacks that add roughly 40 minutes to day one. Our Hai Van Pass riding guide covers the road itself, and the weather notes matter more here than anywhere else on the route. It is a highlight, not a hardship, but it must be in your timing.
• Expressways are closed to you. Worth repeating because Maps will keep suggesting them, and enforcement at the entrances is real.
• Your licence. A 125cc bike requires a valid motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Convention. Insurance companies do check after an accident, and this route puts you far from home.
• The bike matters more than usual. A 50cc scooter will technically do 364 km. It will also be miserable, slow on the passes and unsafe among trucks on QL1A. For this trip take at least a 125cc.
• Do not arrive after dark. The last stretch into Phong Nha is unlit, and cattle and dogs use the road at dusk.
• Luggage. A rucksack on your back for eight hours will ruin you. Strap it to the seat with bungee cords instead — every rental shop in Hoi An has them.

№ 07If you would rather not ride 364 km

Plenty of people want Phong Nha without riding Hoi An to Phong Nha in full, and there is no shame in it. The usual solution is to cover the long, dull middle by train or bus and ride at the far end instead.

• Train or bus to Dong Hoi, then rent locally. Services run from Da Nang to Dong Hoi from around 319,000₫, and Dong Hoi is about 45 km from Phong Nha. You can compare departures and prices on 12Go for the Da Nang–Dong Hoi route. Overnight trains save you a hotel night.
• Ride only the good half of Hoi An to Phong Nha. Take the bike as far as Hue — the Hai Van Pass is the best riding on the whole corridor anyway — then continue north by train.
• Book the caves as a tour. Once in Phong Nha, the caves are visited with guides regardless; there are cave tours and day trips in Phong Nha covering Paradise Cave, Dark Cave and the river caves.

№ 08What waits for you in Phong Nha

The reward at the end of Hoi An to Phong Nha is real: Phong Nha–Ke Bang is a UNESCO World Heritage site built on one of the oldest karst landscapes in Asia, and the caves are the reason to come. They vary enormously in effort and price, so choose before you arrive.

• Phong Nha Cave — reached by boat along the Son River, the easiest and most photographed. Good for a first afternoon.
• Paradise Cave — a long wooden walkway through enormous dry chambers. The most impressive one you can see without committing to a real expedition.
• Dark Cave — zip line, mud bath and swimming. Not a quiet cultural afternoon; genuinely fun if that suits you.
• The Bong Lai valley — a loop of farm bars and duck restaurants outside the park. Riding it is the best use of a rest day, and it is why having your own bike here pays off.
• Son Doong — the largest cave on earth, and a multi-day permitted expedition booked far in advance at serious cost. Not something you drop in on.

№ 09When to ride Hoi An to Phong Nha

The autumn warning is not decorative. Central Vietnam floods most years between September and November, river caves close when water levels rise, and sections of the Ho Chi Minh Road are prone to landslides. If you are riding Hoi An to Phong Nha in that window, check the weather the morning you leave and be willing to cancel.

№ 10What each cave actually costs

Phong Nha is not one ticket. Each cave is priced and run separately, and the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive is large enough to plan around. Prices below are the 2026 published rates.

The boat charge at Phong Nha Cave is the thing that catches solo riders out. The 700,000₫ is per boat, not per head, so two people pay 1,000,000₫ between them while a full boat of twelve pays 208,000₫ each. If you have ridden Hoi An to Phong Nha alone, wait by the jetty for a few minutes — other travellers are usually trying to fill a boat too.

№ 11Putting the bike on the train instead

This is the option almost nobody mentions, and for some riders it is the right one: you can send a motorbike by train in Vietnam and travel on the same service yourself. You keep your own bike at the far end without riding 364 km to get it there.

How it works in practice: you deliver the bike to the freight counter at the station a few hours before departure, they drain most of the fuel, wrap it, and load it into the goods wagon. You collect it at the destination station with your receipt and ID.

• Cost. Rates are quoted per bike by size. As a reference point, operators advertise roughly 360,000–800,000₫ for a standard bike on the long Saigon–Da Nang run, and over a million for a big-bodied scooter like an SH or Vario. Da Nang to Dong Hoi is a much shorter leg, so expect to pay less — but ask for the quote in writing.
• Wrapping fee. Usually 30,000–170,000₫ on top, depending on how thoroughly they pack it.
• Door-to-door. Add roughly 180,000–300,000₫ each way if you want the bike collected or delivered rather than dropped at the station yourself.
• Timing. The bike does not always travel on your train. Allow a day either side rather than expecting to collect it on arrival.
• Peak season. Rates rise around Tet and summer holidays, and space in the goods wagon runs out.

Who this suits: riders on their own bike doing a one-way north, and anyone who wants the Phong Nha riding without the two long transit days. Who it does not suit: anyone on a rental — the shop wants its bike back in Hoi An, and putting it on a train to another province without asking is a fast way to lose your deposit.

№ 12Worth stopping for on the way

The corridor between Hoi An and Phong Nha is not empty road. Three stops justify the time, and they are all close enough to QL1 that you barely detour.

The Vinh Moc tunnels are the stop most riders skip and later regret. An entire village dug itself underground during the bombing of the 1960s and lived there — a tunnel network on three levels, with a maternity room where children were born below ground. It sits off the highway in what was the demilitarised zone, roughly two-thirds of the way from Hoi An to Phong Nha, which makes it a natural break on day two rather than a detour.

If you are splitting the ride in Hue, the second day is short enough at 224 km that adding the tunnels costs you nothing except an earlier start.
