Top 5 Leather Shops in Hoi An 2026: Bags, Shoes & Custom Orders
Five leather shops in Hoi An we would send a friend to, re-checked on Google Maps in October 2026, plus a workshop where you make your own.
Hoi An’s leather trade grew up beside its tailors. Walk down Tran Phu and every third doorway seems to have bags hanging from the ceiling and a cobbler’s bench in the back. The choice is the problem: leather shops in Hoi An open, close and change names quickly, and a list that was right two years ago can send you to a souvenir stall today.
That is exactly what happened to the old version of this page. When we re-checked every address on Google Maps in October 2026, two of our five shops had gone: one address is now a souvenir shop, the other now houses a different leather business. So this list has been rebuilt from what is actually trading. We run a rental shop at 84 Phan Chau Trinh, a few minutes’ walk from all five, and we see where our customers come back happy.

Top leather shops in Hoi An at a glance
All five shops sit inside or right on the edge of the Ancient Town, so you can see them in one easy loop on foot. Ratings are Google Maps figures we read on 15 October 2026; they move every week, so treat them as a snapshot, not a score.
| Shop | Best for | Address | Google rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nony Leather | Bags, backpacks, all-round custom work | 20 Tran Phu | 4.4 (181) |
| Da Bao Real Leather | Widest choice, several branches | 32 Tran Phu (+ 29, 109, 112, 137) | 5.0 (7,900+) |
| Friendly Shoe Shop | Made-to-measure shoes and boots | 18 Tran Phu | 4.7 (335) |
| AODA | Leather jackets | 89 Phan Chau Trinh | 4.8 (215) |
| Pretty My | Vintage-style bags, lower prices | 27 Tran Phu | 4.9 (256) |
A word on ratings. A perfect 5.0 across thousands of reviews usually means a shop is very good at asking happy customers to post, not that it never makes a mistake. It is still a useful signal of a busy, established business, but it is no substitute for the leather checks in section 8.
Nony Leather: the all-rounder
Right on Tran Phu, in the busiest stretch of the Ancient Town, Nony is the shop we point first-timers to. It does a bit of everything: handbags, backpacks, belts, shoes and the occasional jacket, ready-made or made to order in a day or two. It is a sensible first stop if you arrive with only a photo and a rough idea, and want a quote before you commit.
Its Google score is a little lower than some neighbours, so read the latest reviews before a big custom order. If you want a backpack copied from one you already own, bring it: they work best from a real object you can both point at.
Da Bao Real Leather: the widest range
You will not miss Da Bao. With five storefronts along Tran Phu and the biggest review count of any leather shop we checked, it is the name most visitors end up in, often by accident. Range is the draw: with several branches within a short walk, it is easy to compare styles and colours across shops before you commit.
The flip side of a big operation is that you may be served by whoever is free rather than the person who will make your piece. For custom orders, ask who is doing the cutting and when your fitting or pickup is, and get the price and leather type written on your receipt. They keep long hours, which helps if you are fitting leather around tailor appointments.
Friendly Shoe Shop: custom shoes
Friendly Shoe is where to go if your main target is footwear. They trace your feet on paper, measure the width and instep, and build a pair to that outline, from simple loafers to ankle boots and leather sneakers. Most pairs are ready in one to two days, with a fitting in between where they can stretch or adjust.
The trick with custom shoes is to order on your first day and come back wearing the socks you will actually use. Walk around the shop for a few minutes at the fitting; a slight rub on the heel is far easier to fix now than after you fly. For more shoemakers, see our dedicated guide to shoe shops in Hoi An.
AODA: leather jackets
AODA specialises in the one leather item people most often regret rushing: the jacket. A leather jacket has to fit at the shoulders and through the arms while you move, and leather does not forgive a bad cut the way cloth does. That is the case for going to a shop that specialises in jackets rather than a general bag shop.
It is on Phan Chau Trinh, the same street as our shop, so it is easy to combine with errands on the north side of the Ancient Town. Book at least one fitting, wear a shirt of the thickness you will wear underneath, and lift both arms above your head before you sign off.
Hoi An is hot and humid most of the year, so you will not wear the jacket here. Order it for the place you live, not the place you are visiting, and ask for a lighter lining if your winters are mild.
Pretty My: vintage and budget
Pretty My is the shop for browsing rather than commissioning. The style leans vintage: distressed satchels, camera bags, sandals and small goods in warm browns, mostly ready to take away. Prices start lower than the custom workshops, which makes it a good place for gifts.
Because most stock is ready-made, check each piece individually. Open every zip, pull gently on the strap stitching, and look at the edges. Ready-made goods vary more piece to piece than custom ones.
Make your own: a leather workshop
If you would rather go home with something you made than something you bought, Hoi An has small leather workshops that run hands-on classes. The one we can verify on Google Maps is Meadows Handmade Leather Workshop, inside the Craft Station at 98 Hung Vuong, 1.1 km from our shop (about 15 minutes on foot, or five by bike). It holds a 4.9 rating from nearly 500 reviews.
Its class runs about two hours. You pick a small item such as a card holder, keychain or passport cover, cut, stitch and finish it with a craftsman beside you, and take it home the same day. Listings start from about $33 per person. It is a good rainy-afternoon plan and an honest way to learn what separates good leatherwork from bad, which makes you a much sharper shopper afterwards.
Book the class for your first or second day. You will learn to read an edge and a stitch line, and every leather shop you visit afterwards will look different.
Real or fake leather: the one-minute check
Most leather shops in Hoi An sell genuine leather, but grades vary a lot, and some cheap stock is bonded leather or plain PU. You do not need to be an expert to tell them apart. Do these five checks before you pay:
- Look at the edge. Real leather shows a fibrous, suede-like cross-section. PU shows a fabric backing or a thin plastic layer.
- Look at the surface. Genuine hide has irregular pores and small marks. A perfectly repeating grain pattern is usually printed.
- Press it. Real leather wrinkles softly under your thumb and slowly recovers. PU dents and creases stiffly.
- Smell it. Leather smells rich and slightly earthy. PU smells of plastic or chemicals.
- Ask the grade. “Full-grain” is the top layer with the natural surface and ages best. “Genuine leather” is a lower grade. Bonded leather is scraps glued together and peels within a year or two.
Some sellers offer to burn a corner to prove it is real. You do not need that; the edge and surface tell you more, and nobody wants a scorched bag.
Ask to see the edge of the leather before the colour. The edge never lies; the surface can be printed.
Prices at leather shops in Hoi An: haggling and turnaround
| Item | Ready-made | Custom from a good workshop | Typical turnaround |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wallet / card holder | $15–25 | $20–40 | Same day to 1 day |
| Small handbag | $30–60 | $50–70 | 1–2 days |
| Large bag / laptop bag | $60–100 | $100–150 | 2 days |
| Shoes | $40–60 | $40–100 | 1–2 days with a fitting |
| Jacket | Varies widely | Ask for a written quote | 2–3 days with fittings |
These ranges combine the shop prices above with published 2026 guides for Hoi An leather. The first quote in a tourist shop can open well above them, especially for medium bags. Polite haggling is normal for ready-made goods; for custom work, compare the leather grade and stitching rather than just the price, because the cheapest quote is often the cheapest hide.
As with tailoring, order on your first day. Leather and shoes need their own fittings, so if you are also having clothes made, run both in parallel. Our guide to how custom clothes work in Hoi An explains how to stack fittings across shops, and the best tailors in Hoi An list covers the clothing side.
Getting around the leather shops in Hoi An
Four of the five shops are on Tran Phu, which closes to motorbikes from 09:00 to 11:00 and from 15:00 to 21:30 every day (until 21:00 in winter). During those hours, park at the edge of the Ancient Town for 5,000–10,000₫ and walk in. Our guide to the Old Town vehicle restriction hours shows where the barriers go up. A bicycle is ideal for the Tran Phu loop; a motorbike makes it easy to add the Craft Station on Hung Vuong or the beach.
Humidity is leather’s enemy
From late October to mid-December, Hoi An is wet, and leather left in a sealed bag in a humid hotel room can grow mould within days. Ask the shop for a cotton dust bag rather than plastic, keep new pieces out of the suitcase until you leave, and wipe any white bloom off with a dry cloth. If the river rises during the flood season, riverside shops can close for a day, so leave a buffer day before your flight for pickups.
Once home, condition bags and shoes every few months with a neutral leather cream, store them stuffed with paper, and never dry wet leather next to a heater.

Leather shopping in Hoi An: FAQ
Which is the best leather shop in Hoi An?
It depends on what you want. Nony at 20 Tran Phu is the best all-rounder, Da Bao on Tran Phu has the widest range, Friendly Shoe at 18 Tran Phu is best for custom shoes, AODA at 89 Phan Chau Trinh specialises in jackets, and Pretty My at 27 Tran Phu is good for vintage-style, lower-priced bags.
How much does a leather bag cost in Hoi An?
Ready-made small bags start around $30 to $60. A custom bag from a good workshop is typically $70 to $120, and large or heavily customised bags can reach $100 to $150. First quotes in tourist shops can be higher, so compare leather grade and stitching as well as price.
How long does a custom leather order take in Hoi An?
Most custom bags and shoes take one to two days, usually with one fitting or check in between. Jackets are better with two to three days. Order on your first day so there is time to fix anything.
How can I tell real leather from fake in Hoi An?
Look at the cut edge: real leather shows fibres, fake leather shows a fabric backing. Real leather has irregular pores, wrinkles softly when pressed and smells earthy, while PU looks uniform, creases stiffly and smells of plastic. Ask whether it is full-grain, genuine or bonded leather.
Is it worth getting a leather jacket made in Hoi An?
It can be, if you allow time for at least one fitting and choose a specialist such as AODA. Leather does not forgive a bad cut, so check the fit at the shoulders and while raising your arms, and order for the climate where you live.
Can I make my own leather item in Hoi An?
Yes. Meadows Handmade Leather Workshop at the Craft Station, 98 Hung Vuong, runs classes of about two hours where you make a small item such as a card holder or passport cover, from about $33 per person.
How do I stop new leather going mouldy in Hoi An?
Keep it in a cotton dust bag rather than plastic, let it breathe in your room instead of sealing it in a suitcase, and wipe any white bloom off with a dry cloth. This matters most in the wet months from late October to mid-December.
How we checked: every shop name, address, phone number and rating was read from Google Maps on 15 October 2026. Two shops from the earlier version of this page (Blue Lotus at 98 Hung Vuong and Hoi An Soul at 186/2 Tran Phu) no longer appear at those addresses and have been removed. Prices combine the shops’ own quotes with published 2026 Hoi An leather price guides and will vary. Workshop details come from the Meadows class listing. Distances were measured on Google Maps from 84 Phan Chau Trinh. Looking for other things to do between fittings? Browse Hoi An tours and classes on GetYourGuide.
