№ 01Why Mui Ne, and the distance problem

Mui Ne is a strip of beach, resorts and seafood restaurants on a headland east of Phan Thiet, and it exists for three reasons: sand dunes that look like the Sahara, a red stream you walk up barefoot, and wind — enough wind, reliably enough, that it is one of the best kitesurfing spots in Asia.

The problem is where it is. At 725 km from Hoi An it is further than Phong Nha, further than Quy Nhon, further than anywhere else on this coast we write about. It is genuinely a long way, and pretending otherwise helps nobody.

What has changed is how you cover that distance. The old advice — a fourteen-hour sleeper bus — is no longer the best answer, because the Dau Giay–Phan Thiet expressway cut the road leg from Saigon to about two and a half hours. Flying to Saigon and driving out now beats the bus by six hours or more.

The short version: fly to Saigon and take the expressway. On every other route in this cluster we tell you the bus or the train is the sensible choice. This is the one where it is not.

№ 03Flying via Saigon, and the expressway that changed this trip

Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City is about an hour and a quarter in the air and one of the busiest routes in Vietnam, so there are flights all day and fares stay low if you book ahead. From Saigon, the Dau Giay–Phan Thiet expressway takes you to Phan Thiet in roughly two and a half hours by limousine van, for around 300.000–450.000₫ — a journey that used to take five hours on the old QL1A.

Allow eight to ten hours door to door including the airport and the transfer at each end. That is still a travel day, but it is a travel day rather than a travel day and a night, and it costs less than you would expect.

№ 04The train, and the Binh Thuan station problem

The train is comfortable, it is scenic, and it has the same flaw as Quy Nhon and Phong Nha: it does not stop where you are going. North–south services from Da Nang stop at Binh Thuan station, formerly Muong Man, which is about 12 km from Phan Thiet city and roughly 40 km from Mui Ne — a taxi ride of half an hour or more at the end of a fourteen-hour journey.

Fares run from around 480.000₫ for a soft seat up to about 1,25 million for a berth, and the journey takes fourteen to sixteen hours, so it is an overnight. If you like trains and you are heading to Phan Thiet city rather than the Mui Ne strip, it is a perfectly good choice. № 05The sleeper bus

Direct sleepers run from Da Nang to Mui Ne, take fourteen to sixteen hours, and cost roughly 550.000₫ to 1,4 million₫ depending on whether you are in an open berth or a cabin. Several well-known backpacker operators run the route with departures spread through the day, and most will drop you on the Mui Ne strip itself rather than at a station — which is the one clear advantage over the train.

It remains the cheapest way to cover the distance, and if you are travelling on a tight budget it is the obvious choice. But do the arithmetic honestly: the fare gap between the bus and a booked-ahead flight to Saigon is often smaller than people assume, and the time gap is six hours or more.

№ 06The dunes and the Fairy Stream, and what they cost

Three sights carry Mui Ne, and they are usually done as one sunrise or sunset circuit.

The Red Dunes sit right behind the strip and are the sunset one — small, orange, busy, and full of children renting plastic sledges. The White Dunes are 25 km further out, much bigger, genuinely desert-like, and the sunrise one. The Fairy Stream is a shallow warm creek you walk up barefoot between eroded red and white sandstone bluffs; it takes about an hour and costs almost nothing.

№ 07Kitesurfing and the wind season

The wind is the reason Mui Ne became internationally known before the rest of the coast did. From November to March the north-east monsoon blows across the bay almost every afternoon, temperatures sit around 27°C, and it is dry — which is why the strip has more kitesurfing schools than most of Vietnam put together.

That same window is the peak season, so book accommodation early and expect the beach clubs to be full. From May to October the wind drops and swings, the afternoons get rain, and the place becomes a quiet beach town — cheaper, emptier, and a poor choice if the kite is why you are coming.

№ 08Mui Ne is now in Lam Dong province

This one surprises almost everybody. On 1 July 2025, when Vietnam cut its provinces from 63 to 34, Binh Thuan and Dak Nong were both merged into Lam Dong — and the combined province kept the name Lam Dong, with its administrative centre in Da Lat.

So the beach you are travelling to is now administered from a hill station 1,500 m up in the mountains. Maps, road signs, hotel listings and booking sites still say Binh Thuan, and nothing about Mui Ne has changed on the ground — but an address or a bus ticket saying “Lam Dong” may now mean the coast rather than the highlands.

There is one genuinely useful consequence. Mui Ne and Da Lat are 189 km apart, about two and a half hours over the pass, and they are now the same province — so beach and mountain in one trip has become the obvious itinerary, and the transport between them is improving because of it.

№ 09An airport is coming, but not yet

Every few months someone asks whether you can fly straight to Phan Thiet. Not yet. Phan Thiet civil airport, at Thien Nghiep, is under construction, built as a public-private project and designed for about two million passengers a year, with an opening targeted around 2027.

When it opens it will change this route completely — a direct Da Nang service would turn a ten-hour day into ninety minutes. Until then, Saigon is the airport for Mui Ne, and anything you read online offering flights to Phan Thiet is either selling you a flight to Saigon or is out of date in the other direction.

Road distances were measured from Hoi An Old Town to Phan Thiet, and from Mui Ne to Da Lat; times assume normal traffic and no long stops. Bus, train, flight and activity prices follow operator listings current at the time of writing and move sharply with the season — the November to March window is peak. Phan Thiet airport is under construction and its opening date is a target, not a schedule. The Binh Thuan and Dak Nong mergers into Lam Dong follow the 2025 provincial reorganisation effective 1 July 2025.
