№ 01Why stop in Quang Ngai at all

Almost nobody does. Quang Ngai is the province the night buses pass through between Hoi An and Quy Nhon, and the city itself is a working provincial capital rather than a destination — wide streets, a river, good cheap food, no old quarter. If you judge it on the city you will keep driving.

The reason to stop is what surrounds it. Ly Son, a volcanic island an hour offshore, is the best island on this coast and still mostly Vietnamese visitors. Son My, 12 km from the centre, is the memorial at the site of the My Lai massacre, and it is the most serious place in central Vietnam. Sa Huynh, at the southern end of the province, has salt flats and an empty beach and gives its name to the bronze-age culture that traded here two thousand years before Hoi An existed.

And at 116 km it is the closest of the southern trips — near enough to ride there and back in a long day, or to make an easy overnight.

№ 02Every way from Hoi An to Quang Ngai, priced

The short version: the limousine van is fastest, the train is the most comfortable, and the bike is the most fun — and unlike the longer runs south, all three are genuinely reasonable choices here.

№ 03The train, and why it works here

On the other routes down this coast the train has a catch: Quy Nhon’s station is 12 km out at Dieu Tri, and Phong Nha’s is 45 km away at Dong Hoi. Quang Ngai station is in the city, a few minutes from the centre, which makes this the one southern trip where you step off the train and you have arrived.

The journey is 30 km from Hoi An to Da Nang station, then two and a half to three and a quarter hours south. Fares run from around 130.000₫ for the cheapest seat on a slow service to several hundred thousand for a soft berth on the fast SE trains, and departures are spread right through the day and night rather than clustered, so you can pick a time that suits. № 04Bus, limousine and private car

Two kinds of bus serve this route and the difference matters. Limousine vans run Hoi An to Quang Ngai directly with hotel pickup, take two and a half to three hours, and drop in the city — this is the sensible choice and costs roughly 180.000–300.000₫. Sleeper coaches heading for Quy Nhon or Nha Trang will also sell you a seat as far as Quang Ngai for less, but they run on the highway and often put you down at a junction outside town rather than in it.

Ask two questions when you book: whether the drop is in the city or on QL1A, and whether the ticket includes the pickup from your hotel in Hoi An. A cheap fare that ends with a 40.000₫ taxi and a walk with luggage is not cheap.

A private car runs roughly 2–2,5 million₫ and makes sense if you want Son My and Sa Huynh as stops on the way to Quy Nhon rather than as a separate trip — our Hoi An to Quy Nhon guide covers continuing south. We do not run a car service ourselves; book through your hotel.

№ 05Riding it: 116 km down the coast

This is the shortest of the trips south and the easiest to do on a bike. The fast version is QL1A the whole way, which takes under three hours and is dull and full of trucks. The good version leaves Hoi An on the coast road through Tam Thanh — the mural village is worth twenty minutes — then follows the DT roads and the beaches south past Tam Tien, rejoining the highway only where the coast runs out.

Leave by eight, you are in Quang Ngai for a late breakfast, at Son My by ten, and back in Hoi An by dark with Sa Huynh in between if you push. Fill up in Tam Ky rather than trusting the small places, take the wet-weather gear from October, and do not ride QL1A after dark if you can help it — the truck traffic is the real hazard on this route, not the road.

№ 06Ly Son island, and the 2026 ferry fare row

Ly Son sits about 30 km offshore, reached by high-speed ferry from Sa Ky port, roughly 20 km north-east of Quang Ngai city. It is a volcanic island of garlic fields, black basalt cliffs and old temples, and it is the reason most foreign visitors come to this province at all. The fare has moved twice this year and the older figures online are all wrong. On 16 March 2026 the four high-speed operators — An Vinh Express, Super Bien Dong, Super 2 Bien Dong and Super Speed Hoa Binh — raised the tourist fare from 207.000₫ to 237.000₫ per crossing, citing fuel costs. The provincial Department of Construction checked the fuel price, disagreed, and asked the companies to re-declare their fares. Two days later Bien Dong cut its ticket by 10.000₫.

So as things stand you should expect to pay around 227.000–237.000₫ each way depending on the operator, or roughly 454.000–474.000₫ return. Residents pay less. Take cash, and treat any blog quoting 165.000₫ as several years out of date.

№ 07Son My: the My Lai memorial

Twelve kilometres from the city, in the hamlet the American army called My Lai, is the site where more than five hundred unarmed villagers were killed on 16 March 1968. The Son My memorial is built on the ground where it happened: the foundations of the burned houses are marked, the irrigation ditch is still there, and the museum holds the photographs Ronald Haeberle took that morning.

Entry is about 20.000₫ and it opens roughly 07:00 to 17:00. It takes an hour, it is not a photo stop, and it is the most affecting place most visitors to central Vietnam will go. Dress as you would for a temple, and let people who are visiting family graves have their space.

№ 08Quang Ngai now includes Kon Tum

Almost no English-language source has caught up with this. On 1 July 2025 Vietnam reduced its provinces from 63 to 34, and Kon Tum province in the Central Highlands was merged into Quang Ngai, with the combined province keeping the name Quang Ngai and its administrative centre in Quang Ngai city.

In practice this means the province now runs from the sea at Sa Huynh to the Laos and Cambodia borders, and that a hotel booking or a bus ticket that says “Quang Ngai province” might mean the coast or might mean the mountains 200 km inland. № 09When to go, and how long to stay

February to August, and for Ly Son the window is narrower still. The sea is calm and the crossings reliable from roughly March to August; September to December brings the north-east monsoon, and the province takes the same autumn storms that flood Hoi An. June and July are hot but they are also when the ferry runs every day and the island is at its best.

One day is enough for the mainland — Son My, the market, Sa Huynh if you are riding. Ly Son needs an overnight at minimum and is better with two, because the small island across the channel and the sunrise from the crater are both morning things. Nobody needs three days in Quang Ngai city itself.

The road distance was measured from Hoi An Old Town to central Quang Ngai; times assume normal traffic and no long stops. Bus and train fares follow operator listings current at the time of writing. The Ly Son ferry figures and the March 2026 fare dispute follow Vietnamese press reporting; fares were still being re-declared at the time of writing, so confirm at Sa Ky.
