№ 01Why Phong Nha is worth the distance

Phong Nha–Ke Bang is a limestone massif the size of a small country, and it holds the largest cave passage on earth. That is the headline, but it is not why most people who go come back saying it was the best part of Vietnam. The reason is the shape of the place: one small town, Son Trach, sitting in a bowl of karst on a green river, with almost nothing between it and the Laos border but jungle and hills.

From Hoi An it is a genuine journey — 345 km, seven to eight hours by road, most of it up the coastal highway through Hue and Dong Ha. Nobody does this as a day trip. Two nights is the floor, three is right, and the travel time is the reason the crowds thin out so sharply once you arrive.

№ 02Every way from Hoi An to Phong Nha, priced

The short version: take the direct sleeper bus unless you cannot sleep sitting up, in which case take the train and accept the taxi at the far end. Everything else is a preference, not an improvement.

№ 03The sleeper bus in detail

Several operators run Hoi An to Phong Nha directly, with pickup from hotels in the Old Town and An Bang. The standard fare is around 320.000₫ for a berth on a full sleeper, rising to 450.000–500.000₫ for the newer cabin buses with a door and a curtain. Most services leave in the early afternoon or the evening; the afternoon departures arrive around ten at night, the evening ones early the next morning.

The single most useful thing about this route is the drop point. Direct buses stop in the middle of Son Trach town, on the main street where the hostels, the tour offices and the restaurants are — you walk to your bed. That is worth more than it sounds, because the alternative routings all end with a taxi.

Two practical notes. Buses stop twice, once for dinner and once around midnight, at roadside places where the food is average and the toilets are worse — eat before you board. And confirm at booking whether your ticket is a through service or a change at Hue or Dong Ha, because the cheapest fares on booking sites are often the latter dressed up as the former.

№ 04The train, and the Dong Hoi gap

There is no railway in Phong Nha, and none in Hoi An either, so the train version of this trip has a gap at both ends. It works like this: 30 km from Hoi An to Da Nang station, roughly six hours north on the Reunification line to Dong Hoi, then 45 km west to Son Trach.

The middle part is the good part. Soft seats run about 250.000–300.000₫, a berth costs more, and the useful departures leave Da Nang around the middle of the day and reach Dong Hoi between late afternoon and early evening — which means you see the Hai Van coast and the lagoons north of Hue in daylight rather than sleeping through them. The gap at the far end is the catch. From Dong Hoi you have two options: the local bus, about 40.000₫, hourly, an hour to ninety minutes, or a taxi at up to 600.000₫ for a thirty to forty minute run. Split four ways the taxi is fine. Alone, after eight hours of travel, arriving at a bus stop in a town you do not know, the local bus is less charming in practice than it looks on a blog.

№ 05Why you cannot fly, whatever the blogs say

Several travel articles list “flight from Da Nang to Dong Hoi, one hour, 1.000.000₫” as an option. That route does not exist. Dong Hoi airport is served by Vietnam Airlines and VietJet from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang only — there has never been a scheduled Da Nang service, because at 250 km the two cities are far too close for anyone to fill an aircraft.

If you are determined to arrive by air you would fly Da Nang–Hanoi–Dong Hoi, which takes most of a day, costs several times the bus, and still leaves you 45 km from Phong Nha. Flying makes sense to Phong Nha only if you are coming from Hanoi or Saigon in the first place, not from Hoi An.

№ 06Riding it: two days on the Ho Chi Minh Road

This is the best long ride in central Vietnam, and it is the reason a lot of people rent a bike in Hoi An in the first place. The route that matters is not the coastal highway but the western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Road, which runs through the hills near the Laos border from Khe Sanh to Phong Nha with almost no traffic on it — around 250 km of empty mountain road, jungle on both sides, and a handful of villages.

Two days each way is the sensible shape: Hoi An to Hue or Dong Ha on day one, then over the top on day two. Note that the bike version is longer than the bus version — 364 km, not 345 — because motorbikes are banned from the CT01 expressway and have to take the old roads. № 07The caves, and what each one costs

Phong Nha is not one cave, it is a national park with a dozen open to visitors at wildly different prices and effort levels. Here is what they cost and, more usefully, which ones are worth your day.

If you would rather not organise the transport and tickets yourself, there are cave tours and day trips in Phong Nha that bundle Paradise Cave, Dark Cave and the river caves with a driver. We do not run these — the link is an affiliate one, and it costs you nothing extra.

Son Doong — the largest cave passage in the world — is not on this list because it is not a ticket. It is a multi-day expedition run by a single licensed operator, sold out a year or more ahead, and priced in the thousands of dollars. Hang En, the third-largest, is the realistic version: a two-day trek with a night camped on a beach inside the cave, bookable a few weeks out.

№ 08Getting around once you are there

Son Trach is small enough to walk, but the caves are not — Paradise Cave is 20 km from town and Nuoc Mooc is 10 km. There is no Grab in Phong Nha and taxis are thin, so you have three real options.

Rent a scooter in town, roughly 150.000–200.000₫ a day, which is what most independent visitors do; the park roads are wide, quiet and beautifully surfaced. Book a day tour through your accommodation, which bundles the transport with the tickets and is the easier choice for Dark Cave and anything guided. Or ride the countryside loop, a 25 km circuit through rice fields, the old ferry landing and the villages east of town, which costs nothing and is the thing most people say afterwards they wish they had done sooner.

№ 09When to go, and how long to stay

February to August is the window, and unusually for Vietnam the reason is not just comfort. Quang Binh floods: the rivers rise into the caves in the wet season and Phong Nha Cave, the Dark Cave and the trekking routes close outright, sometimes for weeks. September to November is the risk period, with October the worst of it. December and January are dry enough but genuinely cold and grey — this is far enough north that the winter drizzle arrives.

March to May is the sweet spot: dry, warm, the jungle green, before the June to August heat that pushes 38°C outside the caves. Two nights covers Phong Nha Cave and Paradise; three lets you add Nuoc Mooc or the countryside loop without rushing; four is right if you are doing Hang En.

The road distance was measured from Hoi An Old Town to Son Trach; times assume normal traffic and no long stops. Bus, train and private-car fares follow operator listings current at the time of writing and move with the season. Cave ticket prices follow national park listings for 2026 and are quoted per person before parking; confirm at the gate. The absence of a Da Nang–Dong Hoi flight was checked against current scheduled-route data.
