Hoi An to Da Nang by scooter is 30 km, takes 45–60 minutes, and is one of the easiest self-ride trips in Vietnam. The whole way is flat, paved and impossible to get lost on: you follow the coast road (Vo Nguyen Giap → Truong Sa) with the ocean on your right until the Dragon Bridge appears. A scooter rental in Hoi An costs from $5/day with free hotel delivery, fuel for the round trip is about 50,000₫ ($2), and beach parking is 5,000–10,000₫. If you would rather not ride back, a one-way scooter drop-off in Da Nang lets you leave the bike there.
Two honest warnings before you go: wear the helmet properly fastened (police checkpoints near the Marble Mountains are routine), and if you plan to ride anything over 50cc you legally need a home motorcycle license plus a 1968-Convention IDP — full details in our IDP guide. Now the fun part.
Route 1 — The coast road (recommended)
Leave Hoi An via Hai Ba Trung street toward An Bang, then simply keep the sea on your right for 25 km. What you pass, in order:
- An Bang Beach (km 4) — coffee with sea view before the ride
- The empty resort strip (km 8–15) — wide, smooth, almost traffic-free tarmac
- Marble Mountains (km 20) — five marble hills with cave pagodas; 90 minutes well spent, park at the official lot
- My Khe Beach (km 26) — the famous one; grab a fresh coconut
- Dragon Bridge (km 30) — you have arrived; it breathes fire at 9 PM on weekends
Route 2 — The inland shortcut (DT607)
Five minutes faster, zero percent as pretty, more trucks. Use it only if you are late for something in Da Nang. Otherwise there is no reason to skip the coast.
What does it cost?
- Scooter rental: from $5/day (Attila, Vision) to $15/day (NMAX 155) — see all automatic scooters or the budget range
- Fuel: ~50,000₫ round trip
- Parking: 5,000–10,000₫ at beaches and sights
- Marble Mountains entry: 40,000₫ + 15,000₫ for the elevator if you skip the stairs
Which scooter for two people?
For a couple with a beach bag, a 110cc Vision manages fine on this flat route. If you also plan the Hai Van Pass later in the trip, take a 125cc+ (Air Blade, PCX, NMAX) once and keep it for everything — here is our Hai Van Pass guide for that day.
Riding back at night?
The coast road is lit most of the way and quiet after 9 PM. Two rules: sober only — checkpoints multiply at night and Vietnam has a zero-alcohol law for riders — and use the clear visor, because beach bugs at 60 km/h feel like hail.
FAQ
Can I do Hoi An to Da Nang on a 50cc without a license?
Yes — legally and realistically. The route is flat, so a 50cc keeps up fine at its 40–50 km/h cruise. Browse 50cc scooters and e-bikes (no license needed).
Is there anywhere to leave the bike in Da Nang overnight?
Hotels all have parking. Or take the one-way option and drop the bike in Da Nang for good — handy before a flight from Da Nang airport.
Grab vs renting a scooter — which is cheaper?
A Grab car one-way runs 350,000–450,000₫. A scooter for a whole day costs 130,000–400,000₫ and you keep your freedom. If you make even one extra stop, the scooter wins.
Is the ride safe for beginners?
It is the route we recommend to first-time riders: wide lanes, moderate speeds, simple navigation. Ride the first 2 km inside Hoi An slowly to get the feel, then the coast road is easy.
