Routes & Day Trips · Updated August 2026
Somewhere over the Pacific, someone is looking at a boarding pass that says Da Nang, 9-hour layover and typing “is Hoi An doable?” into their phone. Short answer: yes — a Da Nang layover Hoi An run works from about five hours of ground time upward, and it gets better with every extra hour. Da Nang’s airport sits practically inside the city, the run down to Hoi An is a flat 45–55 minutes by car, and the old town doesn’t need a full day to work its magic. What you need is arithmetic, not luck. This guide does the arithmetic for you — four layover lengths, four plans, with the transfer times, bag logistics and turn-back deadlines already worked out.
№ 01The Da Nang layover Hoi An math that decides everything
Every Da Nang layover Hoi An plan lives or dies on one equation. Take your total ground time, then subtract: 30–45 minutes to clear immigration and customs (Vietnam grants many nationalities visa-free entry — check your passport’s current status on the official Vietnam e-visa portal before relying on this), 50 minutes down to Hoi An, 50 minutes back, and a hard two hours at the airport before an international departure. What’s left is your actual time in the old town.
Worked example: a 9-hour layover = 540 minutes. Minus 40 (immigration) minus 50 (drive down) minus 50 (drive back) minus 120 (check-in buffer) = about 4.5 hours in Hoi An. That is a genuinely good visit — lanterns, cao lầu, riverside, coffee — without once checking your watch in panic.
Traffic reality: the coastal road (Võ Nguyên Giáp → Lạc Long Quân) is the fast, scenic route and rarely jams badly, but weekday 16:30–18:30 can add 15–20 minutes. Build it in if your return leg falls in that window.
№ 025–6 hours: the minimum Da Nang layover Hoi An run
This is the floor. It works, but only ruthlessly: pre-book a private car for both directions, store your bags at the airport (see bags section), and accept that you’re going to one place — the Ancient Town — and nowhere else.
- H+0:45 — out of arrivals, driver waiting with a sign. Roll straight south.
- H+1:35 — dropped at the edge of the old town. Walk Trần Phú end to end, cross the Japanese Covered Bridge, drift the riverfront.
- H+2:45 — one proper meal: cao lầu or a bánh mì from a legend, eaten hot, no queue-hopping.
- H+3:30 — car is already waiting where it dropped you. Sleep on the way back.
- H+4:20 — airport. Two hours to spare, story to tell.
Below 5 hours of ground time, don’t attempt Hoi An. You’d spend more time in a car seat than in the town, and one slow immigration queue kills the whole plan. With 3–4 hours, do Da Nang instead: My Khe beach is 15 minutes from the terminal, the Dragon Bridge 10. Save Hoi An for a trip that gives it room to breathe.
№ 037–9 hours: the classic Da Nang layover Hoi An, done properly
This is the Da Nang layover Hoi An sweet spot most long-haul connections land in, and it turns the sprint into a stroll. Same skeleton as above, but now there’s space for the things that make Hoi An Hoi An rather than a photo stop.
- A tailor visit actually fits. Hoi An’s tailors can measure you on arrival and — for simple pieces — deliver to your hotel-free self at the shop within hours. Measured at 2 pm, collected at 6 pm on your way out is a real thing people do.
- An Bàng beach or the Trà Quế vegetable village — one of them, not both — slots neatly between old-town wandering and dinner.
- If your window covers the evening, stay for the lanterns. The old town at dusk, when the silk lanterns come on and the river fills with candle boats, is the single best hour Hoi An has to offer. Plan your return leg to start no earlier than 19:30 if you possibly can.
Getting around town-side: everything in the pedestrian core is walkable, and for the beach hop you can grab a taxi — or do it the local way on two wheels. If you’re tempted to ride, our motorbike and e-bike rental is a ten-minute walk from the old town, and yes, we’ll hold your day-bag for free while you ride.
№ 0410–14 hours: half a real trip
With ten-plus hours you stop planning a Da Nang layover Hoi An dash and start planning a short day trip. Two proven shapes:
Culture day: old town in the morning before the tour buses thicken (it opens soft and golden around 8 am), long lunch, Trà Quế or a lantern-making workshop in the afternoon, lanterns at dusk, car back at 8 pm. This is essentially our 3-day itinerary compressed to its greatest hits.
Mountain day: skip Hoi An entirely and ride the cable car up Bà Nà Hills to the Golden Bridge — the one held up by two giant stone hands. It’s 45 minutes west of the airport, needs 4–5 hours door to door, and with 10+ hours you can even combine a short Bà Nà visit with an evening dash to Hoi An. Book the ticket ahead; it’s cheaper online and skips a queue: Bà Nà Hills & Golden Bridge tickets on Klook.
№ 05The overnight Da Nang layover Hoi An: evening in, morning out
Land at 6 pm, fly at 10 am? Don’t sleep at the airport — Hoi An after dark is the town at its best and hotels here are startlingly good value. Check in near the old town, do lanterns and dinner, sleep in a real bed, and ride back with the morning coastal road to yourself. For where to base for exactly one night, the pedestrian-edge area wins — every minute walking matters when you only have twelve hours. Our where-to-stay guide breaks down the areas; for a one-nighter, search availability near the Ancient Town: Agoda or Booking.com both cover Hoi An densely.
One practical note for the return: pre-arrange the morning car the night before. Morning-of taxi hailing in Hoi An works fine at 9 am and badly at 5:30 am.
№ 06What to do with your bags
Bags are the one Da Nang layover Hoi An problem with three different answers:
| Situation | Best answer | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Bags checked through to final destination | Nothing to do — the airline moves them. Confirm at your origin airport that they’re tagged through. | — |
| Carry-on only | Bring it along — a private car’s boot swallows it, and cafés/restaurants in Hoi An are used to wheelie bags. | — |
| Full luggage, must re-check | Left-luggage counter in Da Nang airport arrivals, or bookable storage in Da Nang city from $3.90/bag/day | varies / $3.90 |
We wrote a full breakdown of every storage option on both ends — airport counter, Radical Storage in Da Nang, and what exists (and doesn’t) in Hoi An itself — in our luggage storage guide.
№ 07Da Nang layover Hoi An transfers: there and back
A private car is the Da Nang layover Hoi An answer. Not because taxis are bad — Grab works fine here — but because a layover cannot absorb uncertainty, and a pre-booked round trip with a fixed pickup time removes all of it. A private car from the airport to Hoi An runs from about $16 per car; book both legs at once and tell the driver your flight number so pickup adjusts if you land late: book an airport–Hoi An private transfer on Klook.
On a tighter budget the shared shuttle does the same run for a few dollars a seat — slower, fixed departures, fine for the longer layovers. Timetables, prices and where to find the desk are all in our airport shuttle guide. There’s also the local yellow bus if you’re doing this on principle rather than in a hurry — see the public bus guide.

Stay connected for the day: your driver, your return pickup and your gate-change alerts all live on your phone. An eSIM installed before you land costs a couple of dollars and works the second you switch off airplane mode — we compared the options in our Da Nang airport SIM & eSIM guide.
The travellers who regret their layover are never the ones who came to Hoi An — they’re the ones who spent nine hours in a terminal food court wondering if they should have.

№ 08FAQ — Da Nang layover to Hoi An
How long a layover do I need to visit Hoi An from Da Nang airport?
Five hours of ground time is the realistic minimum for a Da Nang layover Hoi An visit, giving you roughly 1.5–2 hours in the old town. Seven to nine hours is the sweet spot; ten or more turns it into half a real day trip.
How far is Hoi An from Da Nang airport?
A Da Nang layover Hoi An transfer covers about 30 km, which takes 45–55 minutes by private car on the coastal road. Weekday evening rush hour (16:30–18:30) can add 15–20 minutes.
Can I leave my luggage at Da Nang airport during a layover?
Yes, and it solves most Da Nang layover Hoi An bag problems: if your bags are not checked through, a left-luggage counter operates in the arrivals area with per-bag daily rates, and Radical Storage offers bookable storage in Da Nang city from $3.90 per bag per day.
Do I need a visa to leave Da Nang airport during a layover?
Before any Da Nang layover Hoi An plan, check entry rules: Vietnam grants visa-free entry to many nationalities and e-visas to most others, but rules and durations change — check the current requirements for your passport before planning to clear immigration.
Is a 3–4 hour layover enough for Hoi An?
No. A Da Nang layover Hoi An attempt that short fails: after immigration, transfers and the check-in buffer you would have almost no time in town. With 3–4 hours, visit Da Nang instead: My Khe beach is 15 minutes from the terminal and the Dragon Bridge about 10.
What is the best way to get from Da Nang airport to Hoi An on a layover?
For a Da Nang layover Hoi An trip: a pre-booked private car with both legs reserved and your flight number given to the driver. From about $16 per car each way, it removes the uncertainty a layover cannot afford. Shared shuttles and the public bus are cheaper but slower alternatives.
Is Hoi An worth it on an overnight layover?
Very much — on an overnight Da Nang layover Hoi An trip the evenings are this town at its best. Check in near the old town, see the lanterns, sleep in a real bed and return on the quiet morning road. Pre-arrange the morning car the night before if you leave early.
