Dong Hoi Motorbike Rental: 12 Shops for Phong Nha & the Caves (2026)
This Dong Hoi motorbike rental guide compares 12 shops in Dong Hoi and Phong Nha, real 2026 day rates, cave tickets and distances we measured, plus what the 2025 merger with Quang Tri changed on your map.
Quang Binh is cave country, and the caves are the whole point: Phong Nha Cave by boat, the dry cathedral of Paradise Cave, the zipline at Dark Cave and the rice-paddy loop through the Bong Lai valley. None of that sits on a bus route you can rely on, which is why a Dong Hoi motorbike rental is the default for independent travellers. A scooter costs less per day than one taxi ride out to the park, and you set the pace.
We run a rental shop in Hoi An, not in Dong Hoi, so nothing on this list is ours. That makes this a plain comparison: which shops to message, what to pay, where to base yourself and which roads are worth the fuel.

Quick picks: which Dong Hoi motorbike rental fits your trip
If you only have a minute, match your plan to a shop below. Full details, phone numbers and prices for each are in section 5.
| Your plan | Rent from | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Arriving by train or plane, staying in Dong Hoi | Anh Manh or Anh Loc | Hotel delivery in the city, budget scooters |
| Staying by Nhat Le beach | Beach House or Anh Manh | Both on Truong Phap, the beach road |
| Want a bigger or manual bike | Miss Thu | Range from scooters up to touring bikes |
| Caves are the main goal | Thang’s Phong Nha Riders | Right in Phong Nha, the best-reviewed shop there |
| Ride Dong Hoi → Phong Nha one-way | Quang Binh Go | Delivers in both places, one-way drop-off |
| Long tour south to Hue or Hoi An | Tigit Motorbikes | Set up for multi-day, one-way touring |
Quang Binh is now Quang Tri: what changed on the map
Most guides online still say “Dong Hoi, Quang Binh province”. Since 1 July 2025 that is out of date. Under Vietnam’s 2025 reorganisation, the old Quang Binh and Quang Tri provinces merged into a single, larger Quang Tri province, district level was abolished, and the new provincial government sits in Dong Hoi. The new province has 69 communes, 8 wards and the special zone of Con Co island.
For a rider this matters in two practical ways. First, addresses. The old Dong Hoi city was split into three wards:
| New ward (since 1/7/2025) | Old wards and communes inside it | What’s there for you |
|---|---|---|
| Dong Hoi ward | Dong Hai, Dong Phu, Hai Thanh, Phu Hai, Nam Ly, Duc Ninh Dong, Bao Ninh, Duc Ninh | Riverside centre, night market, Nhat Le beach, Bao Ninh dunes |
| Dong Thuan ward | Bac Ly, Loc Ninh, Quang Phu | North side of the city, Quang Phu beach |
| Dong Son ward | Dong Son, Bac Nghia, Nghia Ninh, Thuan Duc | Western edge, towards the Ho Chi Minh Road |
Second, the park. Phong Nha town, which used to be Son Trach commune in Bo Trach district, is now Phong Nha commune, merged with the neighbouring Lam Trach, Xuan Trach and Phuc Trach. Google Maps already shows “Phong Nha, Quang Tri”, and Paradise Cave’s official address now reads Km 16, Ho Chi Minh Road West branch, Phong Nha commune.
A shop card that says “Bac Ly, Quang Binh” is not wrong, just old. Paste the street name into Maps and ignore the ward.
Old business cards, Facebook pages and booking listings will keep the former names for years. If an address does not resolve, drop the ward and search the street plus “Dong Hoi”. In Vietnamese, the search thuê xe máy Đồng Hới on Google Maps turns up far more small family shops than the English phrase.
Dong Hoi motorbike rental prices in 2026
Riding here is cheap. Prices depend on the bike and the length of the rental, and three days or more usually knocks the daily rate down. These are typical rates across the shops below (₫ = Vietnamese dong, USD at roughly 26,000₫):
| Bike type | Example models | Typical day rate | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semi-automatic | Honda Wave, Yamaha Sirius | 100,000–130,000₫ (~$4–5) | Budget, the Phong Nha loop |
| Automatic scooter | Honda Vision, Air Blade | 120,000–160,000₫ (~$5–6) | Easiest to ride, couples |
| Premium scooter | Honda PCX, SH Mode | 150,000–200,000₫ (~$6–8) | Comfort on longer days |
| Manual sport | Yamaha Exciter, Honda Winner | 150,000–250,000₫ (~$6–10) | Hills and the Ho Chi Minh Road |
| Dirt / dual-sport | Honda XR150, CRF | 300,000–500,000₫ (~$12–19) | Off-road tracks, long tours |
What the day rate should include: two helmets, a raincoat, and ideally a phone mount. Fuel is never included. Delivery inside Dong Hoi is often free or a small fee, but always ask; delivery out to Phong Nha is a separate charge.
Rent in Dong Hoi or in Phong Nha?
This is the first decision. Both work, and a few shops let you ride one-way between the two.
| Rent in Dong Hoi | Rent in Phong Nha | |
|---|---|---|
| Best if | You arrive by train or plane and want a beach day | The caves and countryside loop are the goal |
| Choice of bikes | More shops, more models | Two main shops plus homestays |
| Extra riding | ~45 km each way to the park | None, the loop starts at your door |
| Also nearby | Nhat Le beach, seafood, night market, Da Nhay rocks | Bong Lai valley, Chay river, Dark Cave |
| Watch out for | Riding back in the dark after a cave day | Fewer bikes in Tet and summer, book ahead |
Our honest take: if you are staying two nights or more near the caves, take the bus or a transfer to Phong Nha and rent there. The Dong Hoi to Phong Nha stretch is flat farmland with trucks, not the scenery you came for. Rent in Dong Hoi if you are only doing a day trip, or if the beach is part of your plan.

How to rent, deposits and the licence question
- Message first. Hotel name, dates, bike type. Ask for the all-in price including helmets and delivery.
- Agree the deposit. A cash deposit or a passport photocopy is normal. Do not leave your original passport: hotels in Vietnam must register it, and you may be asked for it at checkpoints.
- Inspect the bike. Brakes, lights, horn, tyre tread. Film every scratch on pickup, with the shop owner in the frame.
- Check the fuel and the spare. Ask where the nearest petrol station is and whether the shop sends someone if you break down in the park.
- Download offline maps. Signal drops for long stretches on the Ho Chi Minh Road West.
The licence, in plain English
Vietnam recognises an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention, carried with your home licence. IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, which many US, UK, Australian and Canadian travellers hold, are not valid here. Under the road law in force since 2025, an A1 licence covers bikes up to 125cc and an A licence covers anything bigger; 50cc bikes still need no motorbike licence.
Routes, measured distances and cave tickets
Once your Dong Hoi motorbike rental is sorted, these are the rides worth getting up for. We measured every distance on Google Maps from Dong Hoi railway station or the Phong Nha-Ke Bang tourism centre (the boat wharf), on roads motorbikes are allowed to use.
| Ride | From | Distance / time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dong Hoi → Phong Nha | Dong Hoi station | ~45 km / ~1 h | Maps shows 40.5 km via the new expressway, which is closed to motorbikes; take the provincial road |
| Paradise Cave | Phong Nha wharf | 21.5 km / ~40 min | Via road DT20; the alternative via QL16 is 29 km |
| Da Nhay rock beach | Dong Hoi station | ~26 km / 35 min | North along QL1A, black rocks meeting the sea |
| Bong Lai valley loop | Phong Nha town | ~20–30 km loop | Paddies, the Pub with Cold Beer, Duck Stop; easy half day |
| Ho Chi Minh Road West | Phong Nha town | Full day | Empty jungle road past Eight Ladies Cave; confident riders, start early |
Cave tickets in 2026
| Cave / site | Adult ticket | What else to budget |
|---|---|---|
| Phong Nha Cave | 150,000₫ | The boat up the Son river is paid per boat, so share one with other riders at the wharf |
| Paradise Cave (Thien Duong) | 250,000₫ | Children 1.1–1.3 m pay 125,000₫, under 1.1 m free; optional electric buggy from the gate |
| Nuoc Mooc eco-trail | 180,000₫ | Swimming in the stream; shares the access road with Paradise Cave |
| Dark Cave (Hang Toi) | Package price | Zipline, kayak and mud bath are sold together; prices change by season |
Prices are the gate rates published by the park and in 2026 Vietnamese travel press. The Paradise Cave turnoff is at Km 16 of the Ho Chi Minh Road West branch, about 4 km from the main road. Plan around 2½–3 hours there, including the climb.

The area became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003 and was recognised a second time in 2015. You can read the park’s background on the UNESCO World Heritage listing for Phong Nha-Ke Bang.
Getting to Dong Hoi from Hoi An or Hue
Dong Hoi is about 305 km north of Hoi An. By car on the North–South expressway that is roughly 5½ hours; motorbikes are not allowed on the expressway and have to use the old QL1A, which makes it a long full day of trucks. Most travellers take the train or a sleeper bus instead and rent on arrival. Our Hoi An to Phong Nha guide compares the options side by side.
To check schedules and book seats, 12Go lists trains, buses and vans on both legs: Hoi An to Dong Hoi and Hue to Dong Hoi.
Riding south afterwards?
Many riders continue to Hue, then over the Hai Van Pass to Da Nang and Hoi An. Unless you rented a touring bike one-way, it is usually easier to hand the Dong Hoi bike back and rent again at your next stop. In Hue, see our Hue motorbike rental guide.
This is where our own shop comes in. Anh Khoa Hoi An runs a fleet of 300+ bikes from 84 Phan Chau Trinh, Hoi An, and offers a one-way rental from Hue to Hoi An so you can ride the Hai Van Pass and drop the bike with us. Hotel delivery in Hoi An costs from 30,000₫ (see the delivery fee page), the deposit is 2,000,000₫ or a photo of your passport, and petrol bikes leave with a free litre in the tank. Browse the full Hoi An motorbike rental fleet or message us on WhatsApp +84 935 206 306.
Weather, fuel and safety
The roads are quieter than in the big cities, but three things catch riders out here.
- Rain and floods. The heaviest rain falls from September to November, and floods can close the Phong Nha boat cave for days. Check with your homestay before riding out, and carry a proper poncho.
- Fuel. Petrol stations thin out west of Phong Nha. Fill up in town before the Ho Chi Minh Road, every time.
- Dark and distance. The road back from Paradise Cave is unlit forest. Leave the caves by mid-afternoon if you are riding back to Dong Hoi.
If something breaks that is not your fault, call the shop first. Reputable ones will send help or swap the bike rather than ask you to pay for the repair.
Dong Hoi motorbike rental FAQ
How much does a Dong Hoi motorbike rental cost?
In 2026 expect 100,000–130,000₫ a day for a semi-automatic, 120,000–160,000₫ for an automatic scooter, and 300,000–500,000₫ for a dirt or dual-sport bike. Rentals of three days or more usually get a lower daily rate. Fuel is never included.
Should I rent in Dong Hoi or in Phong Nha?
Rent in Dong Hoi if you arrive by train or plane and only have a day for the caves. If you are staying near the park for two nights or more, go to Phong Nha first and rent there, because the 45 km between the two is flat farmland with trucks.
Is Dong Hoi still in Quang Binh province?
No. Since 1 July 2025 Quang Binh has been merged into Quang Tri province, and Dong Hoi is now its administrative centre. The old city is split into Dong Hoi, Dong Thuan and Dong Son wards, and Phong Nha town is now Phong Nha commune. Old addresses still work if you search by street name.
Do I need a licence to ride in Dong Hoi?
To ride legally you need an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention together with your home licence. A 1949 Geneva IDP is not valid in Vietnam. Bikes of 50cc need no motorbike licence. Without a valid licence your travel insurance will usually not pay out for an accident.
How far is Paradise Cave from Phong Nha?
About 21.5 km, or around 40 minutes by scooter via road DT20, measured from the Phong Nha-Ke Bang tourism centre. The adult ticket is 250,000₫, and the visit including the climb to the entrance takes 2½–3 hours.
What deposit do Dong Hoi rental shops ask for?
Most ask for a cash deposit or a photocopy of your passport. Avoid leaving the original passport, because hotels need it to register you and it is your only ID at checkpoints.
Can I ride a motorbike from Hoi An to Dong Hoi?
You can, but it is about 300 km on the old QL1A, because motorbikes are not allowed on the North–South expressway. Most travellers take the train or a sleeper bus north and rent a bike in Dong Hoi or Phong Nha on arrival.
