What makes Hoi An’s cyclos special

Unlike the freelance rickshaws of bigger cities, Hoi An’s cyclos are a tight, regulated little institution: exactly 102 licensed cyclos, all members of the Hoi An Cyclo Union founded in 2000. The fleet is numbered up to 104 — numbers 13 and 66 are skipped for luck, a detail the drivers love telling. Every driver wears a uniform, every cyclo carries a registration plate, and the union meets monthly to keep service standards up.

Many drivers have pedaled these streets for 20–30 years and double as unofficial tour guides: they know which assembly hall has the best carvings, where the light falls for photos at 5 PM, and which cao lầu shop locals actually eat at. The job is so prized that in late 2024 Vietnamese media reported cyclo licenses changing hands for hundreds of millions of dong.

There are no meters — every ride is a negotiated price, so rule number one is simple: agree the price before you sit down. Current 2026 rates:

Good to know: one cyclo seats one adult (or an adult with a small child). Groups ride in convoy — a line of cyclos threading through the lantern streets is one of Hoi An’s most photogenic sights. If you want multiple photo stops, agree that (and any surcharge) upfront.

The classic route

The loop most drivers pedal: Hoang Van Thu → Tran Phu → Chau Thuong Van → Bach Dang, sometimes returning via Nguyen Thai Hoc. In one slow half hour you cover the whole heritage core:

Bach Dang Street — along the Hoai River

Highlights: riverfront, sampan boats, Hoi An market

The most relaxing stretch — river breeze, wooden boats bobbing, An Hoi islet across the water. Ride it in the late afternoon when golden light washes over the old shophouses.

Nguyen Thai Hoc Street — galleries & old restaurants

Highlights: art galleries, century-old merchant houses

The homeward leg, lined with galleries and restaurants set inside hundred-year-old houses. Ask your driver where to eat — they outrank every review app.

2. Choose a union cyclo: uniformed driver, numbered plate.
3. Ride before 9 AM or after 4 PM — cooler air, softer light, emptier lanes.
