Cyclo Rides in Hoi An: 2026 Prices, Best Route & Local Tips

Hoi An Experiences · 2026 Guide

In a town where motorbikes are banned from the old streets for much of the day, the cyclo — Vietnam’s classic three-wheeled pedal rickshaw — is the most atmospheric way to see Hoi An. You sit up front, eye-level with the lantern shops and mustard-yellow houses, while a uniformed driver who has pedaled these lanes for decades quietly narrates the town. Here’s exactly what a cyclo ride in Hoi An costs in 2026, the prettiest route, and how to catch one.

What makes Hoi An’s cyclos special

Unlike the freelance rickshaws of bigger cities, Hoi An’s cyclos are a tight, regulated little institution: exactly 102 licensed cyclos, all members of the Hoi An Cyclo Union founded in 2000. The fleet is numbered up to 104 — numbers 13 and 66 are skipped for luck, a detail the drivers love telling. Every driver wears a uniform, every cyclo carries a registration plate, and the union meets monthly to keep service standards up.

Many drivers have pedaled these streets for 20–30 years and double as unofficial tour guides: they know which assembly hall has the best carvings, where the light falls for photos at 5 PM, and which cao lầu shop locals actually eat at. The job is so prized that in late 2024 Vietnamese media reported cyclo licenses changing hands for hundreds of millions of dong.

“Walking, you see the old town. On a cyclo, you hear it — the drivers are Hoi An’s living history books.”— Anh Khoa, Hoi An local

Cyclo prices in 2026

There are no meters — every ride is a negotiated price, so rule number one is simple: agree the price before you sit down. Current 2026 rates:

Ride typeDurationTypical price
Short old-town loop20–30 min100,000–150,000 VND (~$4–6)
By the hour60 min150,000–200,000 VND (~$6–8)
Longer tour with photo stops1–2 h250,000–400,000 VND (~$10–16)
Good to know: one cyclo seats one adult (or an adult with a small child). Groups ride in convoy — a line of cyclos threading through the lantern streets is one of Hoi An’s most photogenic sights. If you want multiple photo stops, agree that (and any surcharge) upfront.

The classic route

The loop most drivers pedal: Hoang Van Thu → Tran Phu → Chau Thuong Van → Bach Dang, sometimes returning via Nguyen Thai Hoc. In one slow half hour you cover the whole heritage core:

Tran Phu Street — the heritage spine

Highlights: Japanese Covered Bridge, assembly halls, ancient houses

Often called the most beautiful street in Hoi An: yin-yang tiled roofs, ochre walls, lanterns strung overhead. From a cyclo seat you’re at exactly the right height to catch the carved details of the Fujian Assembly Hall that walkers hurry past.

Bach Dang Street — along the Hoai River

Highlights: riverfront, sampan boats, Hoi An market

The most relaxing stretch — river breeze, wooden boats bobbing, An Hoi islet across the water. Ride it in the late afternoon when golden light washes over the old shophouses.

Nguyen Thai Hoc Street — galleries & old restaurants

Highlights: art galleries, century-old merchant houses

The homeward leg, lined with galleries and restaurants set inside hundred-year-old houses. Ask your driver where to eat — they outrank every review app.

Walking-street bonus: motorbikes and cars are banned from the old town from 9–11 AM and 3–9/9:30 PM, but cyclos are still allowed — those windows are exactly when a cyclo ride is at its best, with the lanes free of motor traffic. Full schedule in our vehicle restriction hours guide.

Where to catch a cyclo

No booking needed — cyclos wait at fixed stands around the edge of the Ancient Town:

Hotels and homestays will happily call a cyclo for you, and groups can book a whole convoy through the union — a favorite for weddings and photo tours.

Local tips for your first cyclo ride

Five things locals would tell you

1. Fix the price before boarding — per ride or per hour, photo stops included or not.
2. Choose a union cyclo: uniformed driver, numbered plate.
3. Ride before 9 AM or after 4 PM — cooler air, softer light, emptier lanes.
4. Rent an áo dài and do a photo ride — the classic Hoi An combo.
5. A 20K–50K tip for a driver who tells good stories is optional but lovely.

The cyclo covers the old town beautifully — but it won’t take you to the Cam Thanh coconut forest, An Bang beach or Da Nang. For everything beyond the heritage core, you’ll want your own two wheels — see our full guide to getting around Hoi An.

FAQ — Cyclo rides in Hoi An

How much does a cyclo ride cost in Hoi An?

A short 20–30 minute loop of the Ancient Town runs 100,000–150,000 VND (~$4–6) per cyclo; hourly hire is 150,000–200,000 VND; a 1–2 hour tour with photo stops costs 250,000–400,000 VND. Prices are negotiated, so always agree before you board.

When is the best time for a cyclo ride?

Early morning (before 9 AM) or late afternoon after 4 PM — cooler temperatures and the best light. During walking-street hours (9–11 AM and 3–9/9:30 PM) motorbikes are banned but cyclos may still ride, making those windows especially pleasant.

How many people fit in one cyclo?

One adult per cyclo (or one adult plus a small child). Groups simply ride in convoy, which looks wonderful in photos and costs the same per-cyclo rate.

Do I need to book a cyclo in advance?

No — just walk to a stand at Phan Chau Trinh, Nguyen Thai Hoc, Hoang Van Thu or near the Japanese Bridge. Book ahead (via your hotel or the cyclo union) only for large groups, weddings or events.

Are Hoi An cyclos motorized?

No — all 102 licensed cyclos are traditional pedal-powered trishaws managed by the Hoi An Cyclo Union (founded 2000). Drivers wear uniforms and each cyclo carries a numbered plate.
