Hoi An to Ba Na Hills by Motorbike: Full 2026 Guide
Ba Na Hills is 45 km from Hoi An — an easy ride on flat roads. But you cannot ride to the top: the mountain road is closed to private vehicles. You park at the bottom and take the cable car.
Everything you actually need to plan a Ba Na Hills day trip from Hoi An by motorbike — the real 2026 ticket prices, the road rule that catches most riders out, and the one change to the ticket this year that makes riding yourself genuinely smarter than a tour.

№ 01The rule most guides get wrong
You will read blog posts describing “winding mountain roads” up to Ba Na Hills and telling you to ride them carefully. Ignore them. That advice is a decade out of date.
The old 15 km mountain road is closed to private vehicles. It is kept open only for service trucks carrying supplies and equipment to the resort. There is no legal way to ride your scooter to the Golden Bridge, and no back route that gets you around it.
What actually happens is simple: you ride the 45 km from Hoi An to the cable car station at the foot of the mountain, leave the bike in the car park, and take the cable car up. Motorbike parking at the base is free — you are handed a claim card and collect the bike on the way out.
Because the bike goes no further than the car park, the ride is flat, straightforward road riding — not mountain riding. That removes the single biggest risk people worry about. The trade-off is that your motorbike saves you nothing on the expensive part of the day: the ticket is the same whether you arrive by scooter, taxi or tour bus.
№ 02The route from Hoi An, honestly described
It is roughly 45 km each way and takes 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 at a relaxed pace. Nothing about it is technical. The difficulty is traffic, not terrain.
The pleasant way to do it is to leave Hoi An on the coastal road past An Bang Beach, ride north through the fishing villages and golf courses towards Da Nang, then cut inland along Nam Ky Khoi Nghia and pick up the Ba Na – Suoi Mo road heading west to the cable car station. That last stretch is the good part: wide, quiet, and green, with the mountains building up in front of you.

Traffic on this route is heaviest from mid-morning to noon and noticeably lighter in the afternoon. If you are leaving Hoi An at 06:30 to catch the first cable car, you get the best of both — empty roads out, and a quiet ride home.

What the ticket includes
- Round-trip cable car — the only way up and down

What it does not include
Budget extra if you want these: the Wax Museum (around 100,000₫), the wine cellar tours (100,000–300,000₫ depending on tier), the alpine coaster (around 70,000₫ a ride), and all food and drink beyond the voucher.
Your ticket is valid for three days, not one
Since 1 January 2026 a Ba Na Hills ticket is good for up to three consecutive days — 72 hours from first use, with unlimited cable car rides. After your first entry the gates read your face, so you do not need to keep a paper ticket.
This quietly changes the maths of the whole trip. Ba Na Hills sits in cloud a lot of the year, and a fogged-in Golden Bridge is a genuinely disappointing photo. On a bus tour, a bad-weather day is simply a bad day. With your own bike and a 72-hour ticket, you just ride back the next morning at no extra cost. That flexibility is the strongest argument for going independently.

The counters build a 30–45 minute line by 9am. Buy the e-ticket the night before, ride up early, and walk straight to the cable car with the QR code on your phone — the face scan registers on first entry, exactly like a gate ticket.

The Golden Bridge is short, narrow and extremely popular. At the wrong hour you will queue to walk across it and every photo will have thirty strangers in it. There are two good windows.
First cable car, around 07:30 – 08:00
Coach tours from Da Nang and Hoi An typically start arriving from about 09:00. That gives you a clear hour on the bridge with thin crowds and soft morning light. It also means the ticket queue is short — later in the morning it is not.
After 16:00, and especially the hour before sunset
The crowds thin out dramatically in late afternoon, the temperature drops to something pleasant, and the light is far kinder than harsh midday sun. The catch: queues can still build at the cable car stations on the way down, so do not leave your descent to the last minute.
The Hoi An station line is the closest to the Golden Bridge — about 15 minutes and very little walking at the top. It is not running every hour of every day, so check the boards when you arrive. The alternatives (Suoi Mo, Thac Toc Tien, Champa) work fine but add a transfer and 30–60 minutes.
At 1,487 m the summit runs roughly 8–10 °C cooler than the coast and makes its own cloud. A bright morning in Hoi An can still mean a white-out at the bridge. Bring a light layer — and remember that with a 3-day ticket, a bad view is a reason to come back, not a loss.
№ 05What a full day really costs
Here is a realistic day for two people sharing one scooter, riding from Hoi An.

Look at the proportions rather than the total. The entrance ticket is about 73% of the day. Transport — the thing everyone agonises over — is under 7%.
That is the honest case for riding: you are not doing it to save money, because there is very little money to save. You are doing it for the freedom to leave at 06:30, to stop where you like on the coast road, and to come back tomorrow if the mountain is in cloud.

№ 07Should you ride? An honest answer
Ride if…
You have ridden a scooter in Vietnamese traffic before and are comfortable in it. You hold a licence that is valid here. You want to set your own schedule, and you like the idea of a second attempt if the weather turns. Two of you sharing one bike makes it even easier.
Do not ride if…
This would be your first time on a scooter, or your first week in Vietnam. You are not licensed. You are travelling with small children. It is raining hard — the coast road in heavy rain is genuinely unpleasant. Or you simply do not want to spend three hours of your day concentrating on traffic.
Vietnam requires a valid motorbike licence — for most visitors that means an International Driving Permit with the correct motorcycle category, plus your home licence. Riding without one is not just a fine risk: most travel insurance policies will decline a claim. № 08Safer alternatives
- Private car with driver — the comfortable choice in bad weather, and the only sensible one with young children. Door to door from your hotel.
- Group day tour — cheapest per head, ticket usually bundled, but you arrive when the coaches arrive, which is exactly the hour you want to avoid.
- Grab or a metered taxi — workable one way, harder to arrange for the return from the mountain.
- Ride with a friend — two on one bike is legal, cheaper, and far less tiring than two solo riders.

Is it safe for a beginner to ride from Hoi An?
The road itself is flat and not technical, so the risk is traffic rather than terrain — and crossing Da Nang is genuinely busy. If you have never ridden a scooter before, this is not the trip to learn on. Take a private car, or rent a 50cc or electric bike and choose a calmer route.
What time should I leave Hoi An?
06:30 if you want the Golden Bridge before the coach tours, which start arriving around 09:00. The alternative is a late start and arriving after 16:00, when the crowds have thinned and the light is at its best — but plan your descent so you are not riding home in the dark.
Do I need a licence to rent a motorbike in Hoi An?
For a standard geared or automatic scooter, yes — Vietnam requires a valid motorbike licence, which for most visitors means an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category alongside your home licence. Electric bikes and 50cc bikes can be ridden without one, and we rent both.
