Do I need a valid driver’s licence to use motorbike insurance?

Our rental insurance covers damage to the motorbike regardless of licence type. However, to legally ride a motorbike over 50cc in Vietnam, you need a valid Vietnamese licence or an International Driving Permit (IDP) following the 1968 Vienna Convention. Riding without a licence doesn’t void the repair coverage on the bike — but it does mean you’re personally liable under Vietnamese traffic law if police are involved. We always recommend having an IDP or a valid licence before you ride.
