Prices below are ranges cross-checked across several 2026 travel guides and shop listings rather than one shop’s rate card. They move with the season (October’s rice harvest and Tet are the busiest), so treat them as a yardstick when you message shops. A fair Cao Bang motorbike rental quote includes two helmets; if it does not, helmet hire runs about 20,000–50,000₫ a day.

Cao Bang motorbike rental shops, by area
We have not ridden with every operator below ourselves, so we have only listed names that show up consistently across independent traveller guides, booking platforms and local listings. One thing every older guide gets wrong: the ward names changed on 1 July 2025. When Vietnam scrapped district-level government, Cao Bang City’s thirteen wards and communes were folded into three. Shop listings online still say Hop Giang or Song Bang; Google Maps already uses the new names.

Listed address: No. 35, Group 23, Na Can. Probably the best-known name with foreign riders: rentals, guided day trips to Ban Gioc and multi-day loops. Night-bus arrivals get a free dorm bed between roughly 4 and 8 am before picking up the bike, which matters more than it sounds after a 7-hour sleeper.

Listed address: No. 24, Group 23 (formerly Song Bang ward). A rental-first shop listed in the same residential group (to 23) as Green Riders, handy for comparing two quotes before you commit.

3. Kim Dong Street rental shops
The centre of town has several small shops renting Waves and scooters to locals and travellers alike, often the cheapest in the city. Quality varies bike to bike, so this is where the inspection checklist in section 9 earns its keep. Search “cho thuê xe máy” on Google Maps around Kim Dong to see what is open.

Named by several loop guides as one of the places that lets overnight-bus passengers shower and rest before collecting a bike. Confirm the address on Maps before you walk over at 5 am.

A well-known base among loop riders. Booking a bed and a bike in one message keeps things simple, and you can leave your big bag there while you ride.

Rents bikes to its own guests. Handy if you arrive without a plan; less choice of models than a dedicated shop.

Green Riders and QT Motorbikes & Tours (which also runs Ha Giang trips) both offer rides with a local driver, where you sit behind or follow on your own bike. In Cao Bang the bike matters less than the brakes on it. A ten-year-old Wave with fresh pads is a better loop bike than a shiny scooter with worn ones.
Licence, deposit and paperwork
This is the part most travellers skip and later regret. We are a rental shop, not lawyers, so read this as a starting point and check the rules for your nationality.
- Licence: Vietnam recognises your home licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. Many US, UK, Canadian and Australian drivers carry a 1949 Geneva IDP, which is not valid here.
- Bike class: under the traffic law in force since 1 January 2025, an A1 licence covers motorbikes up to 125cc; above that you need class A. Bikes of 50cc and under need no motorbike licence.
- Insurance: riding without a valid licence is the most common reason travel insurers refuse a motorbike claim. Check your policy wording before the trip.
- Deposit: a cash deposit or a passport photocopy is normal. Never leave the original passport — hotels need it, and border-area checkpoints near Ban Gioc can ask for it.
- Fines: penalties rose sharply under Decree 168 from January 2025. Helmets are compulsory and the alcohol limit is zero.

Getting to Cao Bang, with or without a bike
There is no train and no airport. From Hanoi it is 278 km by road (Google Maps, about 5 h 45 min from Hoan Kiem Lake), and most people take an overnight sleeper bus from My Dinh or Giap Bat that lands at dawn. Budget roughly 250,000–400,000₫ for a sleeper; limousine vans cost more. You can check Hanoi to Cao Bang buses and vans on 12Go and book a seat in advance, which is worth it around Tet and harvest weekends.
Coming from the Ha Giang loop, the direct ride is about 4–5 hours on QL34 through Bao Lac, or you can book the Ha Giang to Cao Bang bus on 12Go. Already have a bike? Every distance here was measured on Google Maps from Kim Dong Street in October 2026. That matters: the old version of this page said Khau Coc Cha was about 130 km away. The map says 75–85 km depending on the route, so a long day trip, not an overnight. Times are car-speed estimates; on a semi-auto with photo stops, add a third.

The Cao Bang loop in 3–4 days
There is no single official loop; shops and guides each draw their own. The version below links the measured rides above into a sensible order and keeps each day under about five hours of riding.
- Day 1 — East to Ban Gioc. Out over Ma Phuc pass, through Tra Linh and Trung Khanh to Ban Gioc. See the falls in the afternoon light, then Nguom Ngao cave. Sleep at a homestay near the falls.
- Day 2 — Back via the geopark. Return through Quang Uyen and the Thang Hen lakes area of the Non Nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark, finishing in the city or pushing north toward Pac Bo.
- Day 3 — Pac Bo and the west. Pac Bo in the morning, then west toward Xuan Truong for the Khau Coc Cha switchbacks. Sleep near Bao Lac or turn back.
- Day 4 (optional) — Phia Oac and home. Loop south through Nguyen Binh and up to Phia Oac before the run back to the city. Skip it if the cloud is down: the views vanish and the road gets slick.
Ban Gioc on your own: parking and tickets
Riding in yourself is cheaper than any tour, as long as you know how the gate works. You cannot ride to the waterfall itself. Park at the official lot roughly 2 km before the falls on QL4A, buy your entrance and shuttle tickets at the counter, and ride the electric shuttle in.

Published prices differ slightly between sources, so carry cash and confirm at the counter. Ban Gioc sits right on the border and is now administered by Dam Thuy commune; keep your passport on you, and stay on the marked paths near the boundary markers. Safety and the pre-ride checklist
Traffic in Cao Bang is light, but the hazards are real: steep descents, fog that rolls in within minutes, trucks on the border roads and long stretches with no signal. Treat your Cao Bang motorbike rental like your own bike and run this check every morning.
- Squeeze both brakes hard: the lever should stop well before the grip. Worn pads are the most common fault on rental bikes here.
- Tyres, chain slack, lights, indicators and horn all working.
- Full tank before leaving the city, and again whenever you pass a station out west.
- Offline Google Maps downloaded for the whole province; signal drops in the valleys.
- Rain jacket, warm layer, cash, the shop’s number saved on WhatsApp or Zalo.
- Film the bike from all sides before you ride off, so old scratches stay the shop’s problem.
On the passes, ride in a low gear and let the engine do the braking rather than holding the levers all the way down. Do not ride after dark or in thick fog. Expect 150,000–250,000₫ a day for a semi-automatic Honda Wave or Yamaha Sirius, 200,000–350,000₫ for an automatic scooter or a manual such as the Honda Winner or XR150, and 500,000₫–1,200,000₫ a day if you hire an easy rider with his own bike. Multi-day rentals usually get a lower daily rate, so ask before you agree.
Which bike is best for the Cao Bang loop?
A semi-automatic is the sweet spot: light, cheap, easy to fix in any village and strong enough for Ma Phuc pass and the Khau Coc Cha switchbacks. Pick a manual 150cc only if you already ride one at home. Automatic scooters manage the paved road to Ban Gioc but overheat their brakes on the long western descents.
Do I need a licence to rent a motorbike in Cao Bang?
Legally you need your home licence plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. A 1949 Geneva IDP is not recognised in Vietnam. Most shops will hand over the keys without checking, but if you crash without a valid licence your travel insurance can refuse to pay.

Can I rent in Cao Bang and drop the bike in Ha Giang or Hanoi?
Some shops and tour companies arrange one-way rentals, but it is never standard and the drop-off fee depends on distance. Agree the fee and who pays if the bike breaks down before you leave, and get it in writing on Zalo or WhatsApp.
What deposit do Cao Bang rental shops ask for?
Most ask for a cash deposit or a photocopy of your passport. Do not leave your original passport: hotels must register you with it and you may be asked to show it at checkpoints in the border area around Ban Gioc.
Is Grab available in Cao Bang?
Not reliably. Grab rarely works in Cao Bang province, which is one more reason a rental bike makes sense. Without one you are relying on local taxis, a daily public bus to Ban Gioc or a tour.
