Ba Na Hills is a French-colonial hill station turned mountain-top theme park, perched high in the Truong Son mountains west of Da Nang. Since the Golden Bridge (Cầu Vàng) opened in June 2018, it has become Vietnam’s most photographed spot — a golden ribbon of walkway cradled by two colossal weathered stone hands, with the coastline spread out 1,414 meters below.

Beyond the bridge you get one of the world’s longest cable car systems, a full French Village with castles and cathedral, the Fantasy Park indoor amusement park (most rides included in your ticket), Linh Ung Pagoda, flower gardens and the century-old Debay Wine Cellar. It is touristy, yes — and still absolutely worth one full day.

Option 1 — Private car transfer with driver

The stress-free option: a private car with driver picks you up at your Hoi An hotel, covers the 67 km to the Ba Na Hills cable car station (about 1 hour), waits while you explore and brings you home. Option 2 — Ride there yourself by motorbike

If you like riding, this is a beautiful trip: about 1.5 hours each way, skirting Da Nang and climbing gently into the foothills. You can only ride to the base cable car station — the mountain itself is cable-car-only — and there’s cheap guarded parking at the bottom (around 10,000–20,000₫ for motorbikes).

The route is easy to navigate: Hoi An → Da Nang outskirts (DT607/QL1) → Hoà Ninh → Ba Na Hills station. Set off by 7:00 AM and you’ll be on the first cable cars before the tour buses arrive. Vietnamese citizens and residents pay a lower domestic rate (from 650,000₫ — bring ID; weekend surcharge +50,000₫). Buy tickets at the station or online in advance to skip one queue. The cable car system runs 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily, with the first cars up from around 7:30 AM in high season.

What to see inside (don’t miss these)

Golden Bridge — do this first, before the crowds. The two moss-covered hands are actually sculpted fiberglass and wire mesh over a steel frame, built to look centuries old. Twenty minutes here at 8 AM beats two hours at noon.

French Village — cobbled squares, a Gothic cathedral replica and alpine rooftops in the clouds. Fantasy Park — a three-storey indoor park where most rides (drop tower, 4-5D cinema, arcade classics) are included; the alpine coaster costs extra and is worth it. Linh Ung Pagoda — a quiet corner with a 27-meter white Buddha and huge views on clear days. Debay Wine Cellar (extra fee) — a 100-meter tunnel the French dug into the mountain in 1923. Le Jardin d’Amour — nine themed flower gardens, best in the morning light.

Best time to go & crowd-beating tips

Leave Hoi An by 6:30–7:00 AM. You’ll ride the cable car up with the first wave and photograph the Golden Bridge in soft morning light with almost nobody on it. Weekdays beat weekends, and the domestic-holiday weeks (late April, early September, Tet) are the ones to avoid entirely.

Watch the weather, not the forecast. Ba Na sits in the clouds — a grey morning in Hoi An can be a sea of clouds up top (spectacular), but heavy rain means the bridge views vanish completely. February to May is the most reliable window. And bring a layer: the summit is regularly 8–10°C cooler than the coast.

Plan 5–6 hours inside plus travel — it’s a full-day trip. Pair it with an early night, then spend the next morning exploring the Hoi An countryside at a slower pace.
