🏯 History and Cultural Significance

Phung Hung House was originally built by a rich merchant family trading luxury goods such as silk, pepper, salt, and ceramics during Hoi An’s golden age.

For centuries, it has served as both a residence and a trading shop, reflecting the lifestyle of ancient merchants.

During the great flood of 1964, when water levels rose over 2.5 meters, the house became a shelter for more than 160 residents, showing the durability of its traditional wooden structure and its important role in the community.

Today, the descendants of the original family – now the eighth generation – still live here and preserve the house as a living museum, welcoming visitors from all over the world.

🪵 Architectural Highlights

Phung Hung Ancient House is a two-story tube-shaped house built mainly with ironwood (lim) and brick walls.

Its architecture perfectly combines elements from three Asian cultures:

  • 🇻🇳 Vietnamese style: solid wooden frame, “four-compartment” layout, decorative carvings of dragons and phoenixes.
  • 🇨🇳 Chinese influence: wooden doors, red lacquer columns, parallel sentences, and decorative motifs of luck and prosperity.
  • 🇯🇵 Japanese design: “four oceans” roof structure, curved beams, and wide balconies for ventilation.

The house features over 80 wooden columns supporting the structure, with yin-yang roof tiles symbolizing balance and harmony. The front door is decorated with two “eyes” of protection, a traditional feature found in many Hoi An ancient houses to ward off bad spirits.

Inside, an open atrium allows natural light to fill the house, creating a warm and serene atmosphere. Antique furniture such as carved wooden cabinets, ancestral altars, and century-old ceramics are still preserved, telling stories of wealth and family devotion.

📸 What to Expect When Visiting

When you step inside, you’ll be greeted by the current owner – a friendly descendant of the original family – who will happily share stories about their ancestors and the house’s history.

You can explore handmade embroidery and silk products crafted by the family, as well as see antique items like ceramics, teapots, and trading ledgers from the 18th century.

From the balcony on the second floor, you can admire a panoramic view of the Japanese Covered Bridge and the tiled rooftops of Hoi An – one of the most beautiful photo spots in the old town.

Visitors often describe Phung Hung House as a “living museum” where every corner tells a story about Hoi An’s golden trading era.
