Ly Son Island is a volcanic outcrop off the Quang Ngai coast, famous for its garlic fields, sea-cliff arches and crystal water. South of Hoi An, off the Quang Ngai coast, lies one of central Vietnam’s most spectacular escapes. Ly Son Island is a volcanic outpost of jagged cliffs, turquoise water and emerald garlic fields — still wonderfully off the mainstream trail. Here’s what to see and how to reach it.
Why visit Ly Son?
Formed by ancient volcanoes, Ly Son is famous for its dramatic scenery and its garlic and onion farms, which have earned it the nickname “the Kingdom of Garlic.” Highlights include the climb up Thoi Loi volcano for sweeping island views, the natural stone arch of To Vo Gate at sunset, the cliffside Hang Pagoda, and clear waters perfect for snorkelling. It’s raw, scenic and refreshingly local.
How to get to Ly Son from Hoi An
Ly Son is reached by fast ferry from Sa Ky Port in Quang Ngai, which is roughly 120 kilometres south of Hoi An. You travel down to the port, then take the speedboat across (around 45 minutes to an hour). Bring your ID or passport — it’s required to buy ferry tickets and board. Because of the distance and the ferry, Ly Son is best enjoyed as an overnight or two-day trip rather than a rushed day out.
For ferry timetables and wider regional planning, the official Vietnam tourism site is a useful starting point before you head to Ly Son Island.
Riding down the coast
Part of the adventure is the journey south. If you’d like to ride it yourself, see our dedicated guide on Hoi An to Ly Son Island by motorbike for the full route and tips. A reliable motorbike rental in Hoi An with hotel delivery is the perfect start — and check our safety guide before a long ride.
Getting around the island
Ly Son itself is small and made for two wheels, with scooters easy to hire on arrival to loop the coast, the craters and the beaches at your own pace. Time your trip with our best time to visit guide for calm seas and clear skies.
Plan Ly Son Island as an overnight rather than a rushed day trip: from Hoi An it is roughly a three-hour ride south to Sa Ky port, then a fast ferry across. Once on the island, rent a scooter to loop the volcanic craters, the Hang Pagoda cave and the To Vo stone arch, and time sunset at the lighthouse. Bring cash, sun protection and a light layer for the boat — and check the ferry and weather a day ahead, because rough seas can pause crossings. Done right, Ly Son Island is one of the most rewarding off-beat escapes in central Vietnam.
