🏛 History of the Cantonese Assembly Hall

During the 17th–19th centuries, Hoi An attracted traders from China, Japan, Portugal, India, and beyond. Among them, the Cantonese merchants played a significant role in shaping the local economy and culture.

To strengthen community bonds and worship protective deities, they built the Quang Dong Assembly Hall in 1885.

The hall originally honored:

  • Thien Hau Holy Mother – the goddess who protects seafarers
  • Confucius – symbol of wisdom
  • Various Cantonese ancestors

In 1911, the hall shifted its primary worship to Guan Yu (Quan Cong), the legendary general from the Three Kingdoms era. Guan Yu represents loyalty, justice, courage, and integrity, qualities admired by Chinese merchants who depended on trust and honor in business.
