Da Nang Ao Dai Festival 2026: What Happened, the Hoi An Silk Night and How to Plan for 2027

If you landed here looking for the April schedule, the festival is over: the Da Nang Ao Dai Festival 2026 opened on the evening of 24 April and closed on 26 April. What follows is a recap built from the city’s official programme and the local press, plus the part most guides skip: how to get to each venue from Hoi An, and what to expect when the city runs it again in 2027.

We rent motorbikes from 84 Phan Chau Trinh, a three-minute walk from the Japanese Bridge where the festival’s Hoi An night took place, so a good share of this is written from the saddle rather than from a press release.

What the Da Nang Ao Dai Festival is

The festival is new. 2026 was the first edition, and the city was explicit about why it created it: to build a signature cultural-tourism product around the national dress and to make it an annual fixture on the calendar, alongside the fireworks festival and the summer beach season.

The format mixes three things. First, public spectacle: an ao dai parade through the city centre, a riverside runway, and an art programme on an outdoor stage. Second, the slower cultural side: a photo contest called “Ao dai tells culture stories”, an exhibition and experience space inside the Da Nang Museum, and a seminar on the ao dai in contemporary daily life. Third, commerce: tailors, rental shops and designers set up so visitors could try on, order or rent on the spot, and the organisers pushed two hashtags, #AodaiDanang2026 and #DanangTrongTaAoDai.

Names on stage gave it national press attention. Designer Nguyen Lan Vy, a Hue native who directed the Hue Ao Dai Festival in 2018, showed a collection; the closing programme featured Miss Vietnam 2018 Tran Tieu Vy, and singer Dam Vinh Hung performed. Designers Nhat Thuc and Thinh Nguyen showed collections on the river runway, and designer Tuan Nguyen brought a silk collection to the Hoi An night.

The ao dai is not a costume in Da Nang or Hoi An. It is what teachers wear on Mondays and what brides change into after the ceremony. The festival simply gives it a stage.

The Da Nang Ao Dai Festival 2026 schedule, day by day

This is the official timetable published by the Da Nang tourism portal, Danang Fantasticity. Keep it as a template: first editions of city festivals in Vietnam usually keep the same shape the following year.

Our honest read on the timetable: the parade at 06:30 is the most photogenic event but the hardest to reach from Hoi An: you would need to leave around 05:40. The river show on Sunday afternoon is the one to build a day around. It starts at 16:00, the light over the Han River turns gold from about 17:00, and the riverside promenade gives you a long stretch to watch from.

The Hoi An night: silk at the Japanese Bridge

This is the part that makes the festival relevant to anyone staying in Hoi An. On the evening of 25 April 2026 the festival moved 30 km south for one show, “Hoi An – Silk Colors” (Hội An – Sắc màu của lụa), staged in the space around the Japanese Bridge, according to the Da Nang city government portal.

The theme was not random. The performance told the story of silkworm rearing and weaving along the Thu Bon River, following the thread from the mulberry villages upstream to the old trading port. Designer Tuan Nguyen’s collection “Essence of the heritage land” used traditional silk fabrics, lụa, đũi and the, the same materials the Hoi An tailors along Tran Phu still cut every day. Lanterns and flower lanterns on the Hoai River did the lighting.

Practical notes for a repeat in 2027:

• Walk, do not ride. Our shop at 84 Phan Chau Trinh is 190 m from the Japanese Bridge, three minutes on foot by Google Maps. Motorbikes are kept out of the old-town core in the evening anyway, so park outside the restricted streets and walk in.
• The ticket question. The Japanese Bridge sits inside the old-town ticket zone. Standing in the streets around it is normally free; walking through the bridge itself needs the old-town ticket.
• Full-moon overlap. Check the lunar date. If a festival night falls on the 14th of a lunar month, the old town also runs its lantern night and the riverbank gets crowded early. Our Hoi An events calendar lists those nights.

The Da Nang venues and how far they are

All the Da Nang events sat within a 3 km stretch of the Han River, which makes the festival easy to do on one motorbike and one parking spot. We measured each venue from our shop in Hoi An with Google Maps directions in September 2026.

The Nguyen Van Troi bridge is the old steel bridge just south of the Dragon Bridge, now a pedestrian bridge, and since the 2025 administrative merger its east end is written as An Hai ward rather than the old Son Tra district. That matters for one reason: if you put the old district name into a ride-hailing app or ask a driver, you may be sent to the wrong side of the river.

If you have time to spare between events, the Dragon Bridge is about 1 km north of the Nguyen Van Troi bridge. On weekend nights it breathes fire and water at 21:00, which neatly fills the gap after an evening festival programme ends.

Why the ao dai belongs in Hoi An’s story

Most guides describe the ao dai as “Vietnam’s national dress” and move on. The local story is more interesting, and it runs straight through this part of the country.

In 1744 Lord Nguyen Phuc Khoat, ruler of Đàng Trong, the southern realm whose main international port was Hoi An, issued an edict on clothing that ordered his subjects to adopt a new style of dress. Historians treat that decree as the ancestor of the ao dai, although they still argue about how close the 18th-century garment was to what we see today. Hoi An, full of Chinese and foreign traders and the silk they came to buy, was one of the places where that new dress would have been cut and sold.

The fitted, long-panelled version on the festival runway is much younger. It took shape in Hanoi in the 1930s, when painter Nguyen Cat Tuong (who signed as Lemur) redesigned the garment with a tighter body and Western-influenced details. From there it went south and became the school uniform and formal wear of the whole country.

So when the festival sent its silk show to the Japanese Bridge, it was, deliberately or not, taking the dress back to one of the places it grew up. That is the angle we think the festival should lean into in 2027.

Riding from Hoi An to the festival

Every festival venue in Da Nang is 25–30 km from Hoi An, a flat run up the coast. The routes are simple:

• Coast road (Lac Long Quan / Vo Nguyen Giap): 29.4 km and about 50 minutes to the Bach Dang stage. The easier ride and the one we recommend at night: wide, lit and flat, with the sea on your right.
• DT607 inland: 29.7 km and a similar time. More traffic lights and junctions, not much gained.

• Leave at 14:30 for the 16:00 river show. That gives you 50 minutes riding, time to park and 30 minutes to find a spot by the bridge.
• Park once. Use a guarded paid lot on the west bank near Bach Dang and keep the ticket. Everything else is walkable along the river promenade.
• The ride home. An evening programme ending around 21:00 puts you back in Hoi An before 22:00. Ride at 40–50 km/h, keep to the coast road and watch for unlit bicycles near the Hoi An end.
• Licence and papers. A petrol scooter needs a valid licence covering motorbikes. Police checks do happen in Da Nang, so carry the bike papers we give you.
• Not by e-bicycle. A 60 km round trip is too far for an electric bicycle. Take a petrol scooter, or an electric scooter only if you are sure of the charge.

Wearing an ao dai to the festival

The organisers actively invite visitors to wear one, and on-site tailoring and try-on stands were part of the 2026 programme. You have two options in Hoi An: rent for a day or have one made by a tailor.

• Rent. In 2026, a standard rental ao dai in Hoi An costs about 80,000–150,000₫ for the day, designer or brocade pieces 200,000–400,000₫. Our costume rentals guide lists six shops with addresses and real prices.
• Tailor. Hoi An tailors can make one in a day or two. Budget for a second fitting.
• Riding in an ao dai. It is completely normal here; you will see teachers and office workers do it daily. Tie or tuck the back panel so it cannot catch in the rear wheel, and wear flat shoes.

Planning for the 2027 festival

As of late September 2026, Da Nang has not announced dates for the second Da Nang Ao Dai Festival. What we know:

• The city said it intends to make it an annual event, and coverage of the closing night repeated that goal.
• The 2026 edition ran in the last full weekend of April. If the city keeps the same slot, expect late April 2027 again, but treat that as our guess, not a fact.
• Da Nang publishes its official events list for the next year around December. Last year’s list came out on 1 December. We update our events calendar when it does.
