The Bay Mau Coconut Forest is the easiest half-day out of Hoi An: fifteen minutes on a scooter, a fifty-minute ride through water-coconut canals in a round bamboo boat, and back in town for lunch. It is also the place where travellers most often feel they overpaid, and almost always for the same two reasons.

This guide has the real figures — distance measured on 17 September 2026, ticket and boat prices cross-checked against two sources — plus the thing no listing tells you: the “coconut forest” is not one place with one price. It is at least six separate businesses sharing a name.

Bay Mau Coconut Forest in one minute

Bay Mau means “seven acres”, which is what the original planting was. Today the water-coconut palm covers a far larger stretch of the Thu Bon estuary in Cam Thanh, east of Hoi An, in what is now Hoi An Dong ward.

The palm is nipa, a brackish-water species that grows with its trunk under the mud and only its fronds above the surface, so the canals feel like paddling through a hedge rather than under trees. It was planted here by settlers from the Mekong Delta, and during the war the same density that makes it photogenic made it a hiding place — which is why you will see the word “base” on some of the signage.

One name, six businesses: read the map before you turn in

This is the part that explains most of the bad reviews the Bay Mau Coconut Forest collects, and it took opening Google Maps to see it clearly. Search the name on 17 September 2026 and you get six separate listings, each a different company, each with its own gate, its own car park and its own price list.

So “the coconut forest was great” and “the coconut forest was a rip-off” can both be true — they are different businesses. The highest-rated listing and the busiest listing are not the same gate, and the difference in price between them is not a scam, it is just two companies.

Pick the pin on the map before you leave the hotel, and ride to that pin. Do not turn in at the first person waving a flag on Tran Nhan Tong.

The other way to remove the guesswork is to book a specific, reviewed boat ride before you leave, so the operator, the inclusions and the price are fixed in writing rather than agreed at a gate. It costs more than paying cash at the gate; what you buy is certainty about which gate you are walking into.

Getting there by motorbike, and where to park

Measured from 36 Tran Hung Dao in the Old Town on 17 September 2026:

• The whole ride is flat. Any automatic scooter, an under-50cc bike or an electric bike will do it comfortably — this is genuinely a beginner route.
• The last kilometre is narrow. Tour buses use the same lane. Slow down and expect to pull over.
• Parking is at each operator’s own lot, usually 5,000 – 10,000₫. Get a ticket.
• Touts on the approach road will wave you into a gate that pays them. Politely keep going to the one you chose.
• The pin sits at roughly 15.8742, 108.3761, Thon Thanh Tam, Hoi An Dong, Da Nang 51000 — the ward names changed in July 2025, so older directions may say Cam Thanh commune.

What the basket-boat ride actually is

A thung chai is a round, woven bamboo boat waterproofed with resin, traditionally a fishing tender rather than a tourist vehicle. One paddler stands or kneels at the back and sculls with a single oar; you sit in the middle facing forward.

The standard trip is roughly 50 minutes, out and back, and includes the paddler, a life jacket and a conical hat to borrow. What happens in between depends on your paddler and how busy the canals are, but the usual sequence is:

Bay Mau Coconut Forest prices: ticket, boat, and the extras

Two things cause almost every price complaint here. First, the entrance ticket and the boat are separate. Second, the boat price is per boat, not per person — which is excellent news for a couple and bad news if you are alone.

Two people sharing a 200,000₫ boat therefore spend about 130,000₫ each before extras. One person paying for a whole boat alone spends 230,000₫. Some gates sell a combined ticket at roughly 150,000 – 200,000₫ per adult, which is the same money packaged differently — check which you are being quoted.

The spinning show, the crab demo and tipping

This is the part that is either delightful or irritating depending entirely on whether you expected it. The economics are simple and worth knowing in advance:

• Your paddler is paid by the operator out of the boat fee. A tip is normal and appreciated, not required. Somewhere around 20,000 – 50,000₫ per boat is a comfortable amount.
• The spinning performers are separate. They earn almost entirely from tips collected in the arena. If you enjoyed it, pay; if you would rather not, a smile and a shake of the head is accepted.
• The leaf-craft ring or grasshopper is usually made unasked and then offered. It is a nice souvenir at 50,000₫ and a slightly awkward moment if you decline — decide early.
• Nothing here is a scam, but nothing is free either. Budget 50,000 – 100,000₫ per boat for the tipping layer and the whole visit stops feeling like a negotiation.

When to go: morning and afternoon are different places

Opening hours are 07:00 to 17:00 for the site itself, and individual operators list later closings — 17:30, 18:00 and 18:30 among the six. Within that window, the experience changes completely.

Season: February to May is the reliable window — dry, not yet brutally hot. June to August is fine if you go early. From September to December the estuary gets rain and the occasional flood; the boats stop running when the current is strong, so check before riding out.

What to bring and what to wear

• Cash in small notes. Entrance, boat, parking, tips and coconuts are all cash. Nobody at the water takes cards.
• Sun protection. The main channel is fully exposed and the borrowed conical hat only does so much.
• A strap for your phone. The boat spins. Phones go in the water every single day.
• Shoes you can get wet and clothes you do not mind splashing — the floor of a basket boat is usually damp.
• Insect repellent if you are going at dawn or dusk.
• Leave the big camera unless you have a dry bag. A 360 or action camera handles the spinning far better.

What else is in Cam Thanh

The mistake is riding out for the boat alone and going straight back. Cam Thanh is flat, green and full of small lanes, and the rest of it is free.

• Ride the lanes. Turn off the main road onto any concrete track between the paddies and follow it. This is the part people remember.

Is it worth it? An honest verdict

We rent motorbikes; we do not sell boat tickets, and we have no reason to oversell the Bay Mau Coconut Forest. So, plainly:

• Worth it if you go before nine or after half past three, share a boat with someone, budget the tips in advance and treat it as a cultural show on water rather than a wilderness trip.
• Not worth it if you are expecting quiet nature in the middle of the afternoon in July, or you are alone and paying for a whole boat, or you dislike being sold small things pleasantly and repeatedly.
• The best value in the area is not the boat at all — it is the free hour of riding the lanes around it, which costs nothing and no tour includes.

Doing it on a rented bike

A visit to the Bay Mau Coconut Forest is the single most common first ride our customers take, because it is short, flat and hard to get lost on.

• Any bike does this route. An automatic scooter, an under-50cc bike or an electric bike all cover 6 km comfortably — an e-bike will do the round trip and the lanes on one charge.

• Do not leave anything under the seat while you are out on the water for an hour.
• Fuel: a 12 km round trip is nothing, but fill up in town anyway — there is not much out in the fields.
